The "F" series of Casio watches goes back to the first resin watch Casio ever made, the F-100 in 1977. They weren't water resistant. The later models with the "W" at the end were water resistant to 30M. (F-91W, F-84W). Over the years there have probably been over a hundred F models. Yes there was an F-92W, an F-93W, two F-94W models.. These aren't the years they were made as some think. The F-91W is from 1989.
The "W" series of Casio watches started in 1980 with the W-150, listed in catalogs at the time as their "Watersports" watches. Very generally, the 3-digit W models have 100M of water resistance (The steel screwback "Marlins" W-150, W-250, W-350... the resin screwback W-100, W-200, W-300..., the panel back W-800H). The 2-digit W models have 50M of water resistance (W-59, W-86, W-96). I believe they ran out of 2-digit numbers to use, so the W-201 and up are also 50M of Water Resistance despite having 3 digits. There have probably been over a hundred W models as well.

@@roadgent7921 I don't think Casio has ever said. But the first F series watch was the F-100, and ads had F1 cars all over it. It was a 'racing chronograph'. So I think F-100 sounds cool like F1 without breaking trademark too much.

I answered that question for myself some time ago - I wanted a light and comfortable watch to wear at night. W202 has a better backlight, both timer and stopwatch that displays the time in the t right, the numerals look good (not like the W217), better water resistance and looks cool overall.

  • @EliasZuniga
    @EliasZuniga 3 роки тому +28

Great roundup. I went through a cycle of getting most of these and finally settled on the W59 because it retains some of the best features of the original 91w (super slim profile and digits that appear close to the surface of the screen) and looks most like the original, but with 50m water resistance. The cheap light just stays true to the original and I'm never in complete darkness. I also find the b650w (not included in your review) strangely appealing; looks so much nicer in faux steel than the plastic one.

Definitely agree with the W-86 pick, the teal strokes stood out to me immediately and complement the black case well. Speaking of the case, also worth mentioning is that the design takes slight cues from the classic G-Shock. Along with the fact that it's thicker than the F91W, it's like it sits somewhere between that and a G-Shock. Fell in love with it as soon as I saw it, glad you're giving it away.

Great watches. I wear my W59 literally all the time, only taking it off to clean - no major scrathces in 3 years! The backlight isn't as terrible as you might get from the video - it's much more readable in person and I actually prefer it to a brighter one for discreteness. W86 is almost the same but W59 and F91-w have brighter crystals, which are a little better readable in daylight.

I know not everyone likes the bracelets on these lower end Casio models but I actually like it. For me it was the upgraded module that really made up my mind. That W217 apparently has the same case shape as the solar version AL190, which happens to be very cool. However, that larger case makes more sense on the 190 due to its solar cells. Or, if someone wants/needs larger numbers, there they have it on the W217. The best movement IMO is in the "cushion" 640 sibling there. And I really like the W59 font decoration. It looks really 80s! ... to wrap things up, the F91 is just amazing for its simplicity and minimalism. I guess I like best the ones you like least! lol. Amazing video. Thanks and congrats for it

The Casio f108 series is another cool alternative, especially if you're into more funky colors other than just black (black is still an option though)
On a kinda unrelated note it seems like Armitron released a few new retro digital/ani-digi watches that compete directly with the casio's that have metal bracelets. Where these come out ahead is that the cases are stainless rather than the plastic of the casio's. They're about $55 and there's a 20% coupon almost all the time. I think these would fit this channel very well as well as be a cool comparison video.

Yesterday when I was walking away from buying beer at a local grocery store, I stepped on a black mass on the ground and thought I had dropped something. I picked it up and it was an old Casio F-28W marked Japan. It didn't have a band but all lugs were completely intact. The crystal suffered scratching from probably being the the grocery store floor all day.. I'm just glad an employee didn't throw it out! I felt so lucky to find it. Cheers

Definitely missed the W218H - though the price seems to vary from £15 to £40 depending on the colour. I have an orange one I picked up for about £16 a year ago and is my go to beater.

SKMEI 1412 is the better alternative for Casio F91. It looks similar but It has better backlight, better water resistance, and a lot cheaper. You need to get one and compare them side by side.

Great video, when I was upgrading my F-91W I got the F-201WA as it has the timer function, dual time, slightly larger screen, bigger battery and better backlight. Looks a bit less retro but I kinda prefer the softer lines.

You have to check out the Casio W800H. It retails at $20, for which you get a budget G-Shock! It's got 2 of the triple 10's: 10bar water resistance, and 10 year battery life. I can't say whether or not it would survive a 10m drop, but I'm willing to bet $10 it would.
It has almost all of the features of the standard DW5600: alarm, chronograph, decent backlight, and a second time zone (something my DW5600 doesn't have)! Plus, you can unlock the count down timer (the one missing feature compared to the 5600) with an easy mod at home.
I was going to buy one at Walmart, but then I saw the DW5600 and I couldn't resist. Yet, I'm still considering getting one. It's only $16 at Walmart... another watch can't harm, right?

Honestly, the F91w in spite of its shortcomings on the led light, is a classic! The F105w would be an alternative if the led light is important to you. What makes these models so popular is that it's unobtrusive--you barely feel it's there. I would personally go for the W217H model.

From your presentation though I love the 217. Enjoy the channel and my watch collection of Casios increases weekly because of you LOL!!

The F-94W is a perfect alternative! The yellow highlights, and functional dial are an improvement on the F-91W face in my opinion. Roughly the same size, but much more minimal compared to the F91, makes for a cleaner looking watch overall. Great vid!

Great review. I’m enjoying a mustard yellow F-91W as a hark back to my first black F-91W childhood watch. I can see why the W217H is easy to read for those who don’t want to put their reading glasses on each time I want to read the watch; with its larger taller font. I miss the having the better backlight of the winning Casio though compared to my F-91W.

Enjoyed the video. Casio, it seems people either love them or hate them. I love them. The one watch that I would have loved to see in your comparison is the Casio A700. GREAT backlight. Enjoyed your presentation and it now has me getting ready to buy my 17th and 18th Casio watches which will be the W-86 and F-105W. Thank you again. Last but not least, it would have been nice for you to copy and paste the winner of the watch give away, Randy's comment in your announcement. You said "a great suggestion" after scrolling down for almost two minutes and not seeing his comment, I gave up. TY again for the video.

F-105 is my favorite; it's been 4 years in my collection and I don't want to put it away... small, superlight, perfect luminescence, long life battery, enough strong glass and a short band very suitable for small wrists.

Who here has heard of the B650??
I'm guessing most people, that like this brand & style, but... what the hell is the difference with the W217??
I've got both the W217 & finally got a price cut on a B650 (double the price for some reason!!) and out of these, its my fave, just because I'm a bit short-sighted and the numbers a very legible.
Also, yes, its chunkier, but that means its more durable - I'm also a bit of a klutz with long arms and tend to bang my hands wayy to often, no matter how slick & slim the watch is, I'll always bang it somewhere...

The W800H is also a really good one for similar price and similar size to the W217H. It’s also really tough and hardy. I always consider mine as like a miniature beginner G-Shock. It even has 100m WR and a good backlight. Excellent watch for the money as always with these sort of Casios.

If one of the "features" of the original F91 is being "too small to hit", you should have totally added the A700 to the comparison, as a "fancier" Casio digital watch. It's a bit flatter, has some nice metallic strap variations, features better lighting like all of the newer models and still maintains that angular F91-inspired design

Well now that the W-86 is not available in the US, I had to have one! Ordered from Amazon UK, just got it yesterday and yes, very nice looking watch. It is tied with my F-105 for best daily beater. After 20+ years of wearing Timex Expeditions, I started on Casios with the F-108 and W-217h. But I have found that these slightly smaller watches, and the A-168, are ideal for me. Thank you for bringing them to my attention with your great videos!

I was thinking of getting the F91W but I saw in some reviews about the backlight it has, then they suggested the F217 but they never mentioned the big difference in size which you did in this video. Now I discovered that there would be another alternative the F86 and F105, hopefully I can make up my mind before the year ends. Thanks for a wonderful review.
