I bought this on vinyl from a dealer back in 1984 and it blew my mind! I just had to get as much of their stuff as I could. "Gris" is my fave, and the cover smells cool too, like petrol! That guy put me on to so many great records, like 1/2 Japanese's "Half Gentlemen/Not Beasts" triple 12" box, Etron Fou Leloublan and !Officer.
this and the album with tin foil with spray paint were my favorite album packaging. I had a cassette tape and at a live show they told me it had creosote smeared on the paper and they had trouble getting it distributed because of that. I have a pretty decent collection of their stuff myself. and anyone liking this you might try looking up "dead voices on air" and "Rapoon" which is what a couple of members started recording after Soviet France. thanks for posting this, haven't heard in awhile.
I definitely agree...I would hope that the artists start also re-releasing some heavily wanted works but apparently, no such event is foreseen for most indie artists...I guess they would sell out many forums, stadiums etc. provided their music comes to people...when somebody asks what I listen to then most people do not even know what should they picture behind ambient music, they simply do not know at all...but they know pop artists, plague of the culture...dark times now...
yes. there are magazines like the excellent 'wire' that promote live music and festivals in the experimental music scene, but the mainstream now is worse than it was when i grew up in the 80's. all bland manufactured shite from glorified tv talent shows. i fear for the future at times, but then realise that there will always be music that is a way from that and will continue to be supported. we have to support it, for no-one else will!
if only it didn't run for $100 or more! Also since I last posted I have acquired Loh Land, Just an Illusion (box set) and :$oviet:France: (there second album). nothing but good things!

Thank you so much for framing this particular track from the album. You may not know how and why, but you saved my life !
Mesmerizing! Listen it for hundreds of times.

I had this cd years ago, I sold it online for 113 bucks!
well said. the only trouble is most of their catalogue is out of print, and second-hand record shops want a small fortune for copies

magnusbijec vinyl on demand is releasing a box set of Zoviet France, I think 15 albums up to 1987.
Shadow, Thief of the Sun is my personal favorite album.
opus magnum of :z*f: and the full reason for collecting their work and ambient music in a broader sense...

misterbkh It's the porcelain pot cassette that is dangerous. It contains a radioactive bird feather.

Why must they be so enigmatic!?!
Creepy as hell. I only own Shouting at the ground, anything else I should be on the look out for?
My only one as well. That's my benchmark.
Mohnomische is their best one) but also Norsch (1984), Look into me, Shadow thief of the sun.
