    the cool thing about the Shodan fight in cyberspace is that back then you had to up your resolution for it taking longer for her to take over your screen. It is nearly impossible to defeat her on 320x240. But if your rig at the time could go higher than that, you could defeat her. Trully a meta confrontation of better hardware.

      Jospeh Anderson will make you learn something new about a game. TehSnakerer will make you appreciate something about a little-known game. Noah Gervais will make you consider a game in a different point of view. Civvie11 will take an electrode to the gonads for your gaming entertainment, but Grimbeard does that thing with his tongue that drives you wild.

    You probably already know this, but just in case: the reason SHODAN is a cone is because it's a visual representation of Citadel Station. Like you said in the video, SHODAN is the station itself.

    This game REALLY pushed graphics technology. It was one of the first to do perspective correct texture mapping. It also was one of the first to do dynamic lights, as well as animated lighting. It also pioneered the use of slanted surfaces, including irregular polygons. It also was the first to do true transparency, instead of faking it. (They said it was done as part of the lighting model) It also was one of the first games to use 'render to texture'; rendering what the cameras "see" to a texture, in the case of security cameras.
    Nearly all of this is technology that we still use today. And that's not to mention all of the design concepts this and Ultima Underworld began. Many of those concepts have seeped into nearly every genre today.
    I don't mean to say that the game doesn't have problems; just that it was massively influential and popularized many of the concepts deemed essential, today.

    Pro tip : when exploring or just when you find something you think might be important in a level. PUT A CUSTOM WAYPOINT ON THE MAP AND NAME IT.
    The custom waypoints in this game transform exploration from a chore to a methodical joy. With that said, I did need a notepad for efficiency but I often do that with games. I would have a page for every floor where I note important logs I found and various codes and hints. It does help. With custom waypoints on top of that it felt pretty good to pick the game apart.

      Been two years since this comment, but, oh, God, yes. When it was implemented in Thief 2 (and retroactively by fans into Thief Gold), it was one of my favorite features. It's so damn simple, but it really helps. Waypoints from devs can be ok, but you have to conform to what they think is good for you. If I make my own points, I'm making something that works for me. It's weird how much of a help something like that is.

    • @ladams391

      Playing games from this era is always a really interesting experience because the medium was still relatively new and the technological and artistic pioneers of it took inspiration from other prominent contemporary media and pop culture, like most all artists throughout human history that are undergoing an experimental phase. As a result it's quite fun to go back and replay these games, all the while trying to experience them through the lense of whatever media/pop culture icons the developers were seemingly inspired by. Duke Nukem 3D is a great time just for what it is and the craftsmanship displayed in it alone, but it's an absolute blast to roll through each level like an 80s action hero, putting oneself in the mindset of a comically grotesque caricature of that time's ideals of masculinity.

  • @robincray116

    In the cyberspace minigame, the walls are playing Conway's game of life and you can also get minigames like pong and breakout for your interface from the cyberspace minigame. It's a minigame with a minigame in it and the means to unlock more minigames so you can more literally play games within the game.
    Shit like this is what makes the game awesome.

Giving it more modern gameplay while preserving its depth and a new coat of paint is a perfect idea. So many new people could marvel at Shodans magnificence then

    My two first ever PC game purchases, back in '94 or maybe '95, were Ultima Underworld and System Shock. Both completely blew my mind, but this one went on to rule my life for weeks until I managed to beat it. Yes, this retrospective review of it is fair, there is a lot about that looking back from 2020 is easy to criticise. A lot of that though is due to the fact that a whole heap of stuff that has been refined over and over for 25+ years was first invented in these games. But what I wanted to say really was that when this came out in '94 it was a completely stunning, life changing game that wiped the floor with anything else in sight. It was amazing. Same sort of deal as Witcher 3.

      It's because SS1's default control scheme is oblique to the point of frustration. Kind of crazy how something that basic has basically relegated it to obscurity.

    • @MarioPawner
      @MarioPawner 4 роки тому +4

      Having just completed both, I think I prefer the second more thanks to the potential for different character builds, but they're both really good and still hold up in my opinion. The Enhanced Edition lets you customize the controls extensively enough that I didn't have any serious problems with them aside from a smallish learning curve.

    • @araamahasla555
      @araamahasla555 4 роки тому +14

      Because its actually good. SS2 is from 1997 and it plays better than most FP games in those 23 years. Bioshock that so many people seem to "love" for no apparent reason is a dumbed-down version of System Shock 2, not different - straight worse, the same way Bioshock Infinite is to Bioshock 1 but to so much higher degree. To this day games copying it and almost never exceeding, Prey 2016 is built entirely on SS2 bones with no substantial changes to the core level design, progression and most impressively gameplay. SS 1, on the other hand, is its pithecanthrop predecessor with only vague success in all of those categories and tremendous failure in its presentation (acidic visual style rather than technically, which was still horrible since most people couldn't afford a computer that could run it) and abysmal EVEN for 1994 controls.

    This is so wierd, I literally just beat the game two minutes before I posted this. Such a good game. A shame that it gets overlooked in favor of System Shock 2, but that'll change soon enough.

    Regarding the audio & noise issues you were experiencing with the music, you *need* to try out VirtualMIDIStynth and the SS1 soundfont for it!
    The default Windows MIDI doesn't play the game's music well _at all._ It's a quite massive improvement.

    System Shock is the music. You could put that music in a doom game and I would not notice because it slaps so hard

    The song in the background at around 32:30 would be a legitimately great ambient track for System Shock. It’s fitting. Grim makes some bangers. He needs to sell his soul to spotify so I can listen to his stuff conveniently.

    I found and survived on this channel (and many other youtube channels in the last 2 years of the pandemic. Thank you so much for the fuckin great content.
    If you see this comment around, I'm using this same comment to engage, support and praise the creators that I mostly watched on my Xbox over 2020 and 2021 and didn't take the time to feed the algorithim on. FIXING THAT NOW \o/
    THANK YOU

      I feel you, friend. I too really was glad content creators were out there to have "something" to look forward to and enjoy. Biggest time I spent isolated was 21 full days, seeing no one else.
      I get your feeling that they helped your life, they helped mine as well

    The only notes i know of in the game are the numbers and the fact you can make notes on your map.
    I used that feature to keep a track of energy stations and points of intrest to keep from getting lost.
    Other then that citadel stations levels are all circles just go straight and youll loop back around, and as a final note the controls may be a bit obtuse but once you get the hang of them the game is heavily intuitive

    Saved this video for very last because I'm extremely sensitive to hearing any kind of criticism for this game and it causes me to take psychic damage if I see/hear said criticisms. But, I have steeled myself, and I am ready to endure this.

    Heavy radiation can disrupt or outright disable electronics IRL, so the in-game screen distortion and loud static effects are meant to portray your cybernetic implants getting all fucked up and scrambled from direct exposure to Godzilla rays. They certainly could have made the sound a lot less grating, but I still really love that attention to detail. I remember on my first playthrough I wanted to explore inside the reactor, and I had a ton of detox patches so I was like "yeah I'll probably be fine," then as soon as I opened the door the game went PFFFFSSSSSHHHHHH and my health dropped like a rock and I was like "OH SHIT OH FUCK WHERE'S THE RADIATION SHOWER!?" while I ran for my life. This game is so fucking awesome lol
