Love this. I’m a disabled crocheter and actually gave up on learning years ago because I have a lot of arm weakness and dexterity issues. I’m surprised I’m doing well with it now (maybe just more stubborn lol) but I’ve been one offing s lot of hooks to try different things. I keep meaning to use these fancy pencil grips I’ve gotten from an occupational therapist and your video is getting me to go pull one out to try and I’ll let you know how that goes. They’re really big grips though and long, though my OT had one cut in half which I think I’ll likely have to do. I had the best laugh over the Susan Bates ergonomics part of your review. Joann’s sells them in the single buy section so I grabbed some of those with the regular ones. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what they were supposed to do as far as ergonomics either. They don’t. Lol. They also sell some wood handled Susan Bates as well. Those are thicker but also lighter and I like them as far as the cheap hooks go. Now I want to study the cheek thing though because I really liked the first Boye hook I got my hands on. But I just grabbed another just the other day hoping to swap it out with the Susan Bates I am using for a cardigan I’m working on and that’s when I learned the hard way that Boye has their own dang measurements that don’t align with anyone else!! I was using an I/9/5.5mm for the cardigan and saw the I/9 part and the store and excitedly brought it home since I’d so liked the other Boye hook I have (I like that the tip is duller and less prone to splitting yarn. I guess also it lacks the sharpness on the other end as you mentioned or the Bates as well but it was actually the tip that was doing it for me) and immediately realized their I/9 is 5.25mm. Nooooo. So no using it for my already started cardigan. And I’m wondering what the heck they call a 5.5mm? And why on earth they would make you their own dang measurements? And it’s super wonky. One of the other measurements they do different is the 6 or 7 but it’s bigger than the standard while that 9 is smaller at 5.25. Like what on earth are they doing?! But major heads up for folks to look out for! I got my hands on my first Clover Amour and liked it but wasn’t exactly wowed. Funny enough, for the cheap hooks my favorite may actually be the cheapest white plastic hooks that both Michael’s and Joann’s sells in the single hook displays. I’ve used a an 11 and a 4 and and an 8 (but ooh I also got a pretty sparkly Boye acrylic 8- that one was my favorite of a bunch of different 8/5mm hooks I’ve tried) and it seems to do well at every size. Funny your favorite is also a bit ol plastic hook. I’m not home to go look over those hooks more closely but I’m curious now if they’re tapered or how they cheek is on those. But I can say I’ve heard people say plastic is awful or it snags. These are pretty smooth and haven’t caused any issues that way and from a disability perspective I suspect I may be so happy with them because they are so lightweight. Similar to that acrylic Boye hook I mentioned. My favorite hooks are the Clover Amour. I’ve spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on Furls hooks and I have other ergonomic hooks that I’ve enjoyed; as well as the aluminum hooks that I have started with. The Clover Amour win every time. The others are fun, but Clover wins for comfort, speed, and accuracy (I almost never drop my yarn with these hooks, and my stitches are perfectly formed).

I've seen other hook videos talking about metal vs plastic, slim vs bulbous, etc. The explanation of the tapered head made everything click. I stumbled upon Tulip hooks a few years ago and now I use them exclusively. Now I actually know why. LOL 😅
Finally! Someone who agrees with me. I absolutely love my.Clovers my tulips, I have a full set of the black and gold tulips, as well as several of the pink ones. I ordered them in the sizes I like the best. I also enjoy using the Knit Picks laminated wood hooks. I like them in the larger sizes of JJ J, K K, and N. I was really disappointed in the Susan Bates ergonomic cooked. They are not all that comfortable, behold, and I much prefer the regular aluminum hooks. Thanks for the great review.
100% agree about cheeks on hooks. It took me a while to realise why my hooks snagged on each stitch till I bought the Tulip hooks, I haven't used anything else since.
I agree with you 💯 % … & I’m glad I never wasted my money on furls bcuz I learned as a kid on Susan bates aluminum hooks ..(still like them a lot) but have only tried two others that I fell in love with & will NEVER CHANGE… as the old saying goes… if it ain’t broke … don’t fix it…the same two you mentioned tulips and clover amours…… but I also have one other little GEM … the clover soft touch….which is same as amours but a much shorter stem…. Holds lots less stitches but SOOO VERY COMFORTABLE ….&&&& THANK YOU for your PERFECT review… well worth the listen/watch

Haven't read comments to see if any mentioned but the Hamanaka Raku Raku double sided are ones I use and enjoy. The double side doesn't bother me because I hold the hook closer to the tip but its triangulated handle helps, it also goes through loops very smoothly. They also make inline hooks that aren't double sided. Another great brand from Japan that makes crochet hooks, knitting needles and notions.

I adore my tulip etimo hooks. My hands thank me. 2nd choice for me is the amour, because the text at the bottom of the handle actually gives me a pre-blister hot spot The etimo are smooth on the very end, where the clover's 'japan' and 'clover' text rubs my pinky until it is sore with the twisting motion used to pull a loop through. I am thinking about smoothing those spots with a little sugru putty or something.

i have 2 sets of the clover amore. they are the only hooks I will use. i have a couple tulip hooks. i like them equally as much, I just don't use them as much because i don't have all the sizes and they are more expensive.
I had Susan bates and Boyd as hand me downs. I went on Amazon and read all reviews and went with the Clover. They’re perfect for me so I stopped looking. Looks like I lucked out on my first try. I love these informative you tubes. Good job!

I am in total agreement with you. I hold my hooks over hand and found through trial and error that my LOVEs are the Clover Amour and the Tulips. . A few of the Pryms are good too, but Susan Bates hooks are a no go for me. I won't bother with even trying the Furls. Thank you for sharing this info
Omg I never knew until ur video. It's definitely the cheeks! Makes me feel like I need to crochet loose because it gets caught but once past the cheek it wants to fall off sometimes. I hate Boyle hooks because of this! I'm going to try other tapered with skinny cheeks now!
Great point about the “cheeks”. I’ll have to pay attention now. I crochet overhand (knife not pen style) and started on Boye hooks originally. I have some Furls hooks, both streamline and Odyssey, that I do like, especially for larger sizes but they do tend to feel heavy over time. While I like the Clover Amours, and they are much easier on the wallet than Furls, the Clover’s I really like best are the gold Soft Touch, which surprised me based on reviews that compare them. To some degree it is trial and error depending on your crochet style. I may give the Tulips a try if I can ever find singles for a reasonable price, just to see if I like them, because they do have a good reputation overall.
I completely agree about “cheeks” and your ideal hook shape. I wish the Clover Amour had a slightly pointier head, a slightly longer tip, and that the grips were wider and longer on the smaller hook sizes. I guess I try a Prym, even though I’m all about the metal hook, too. Thanks!
Love my Tulip Rose Hook set. First set, I have ever bought…and I ended up buying two sets. My first hook was a Boye, just like my moms. I have tried SB, but I am not a fan.
Totally get the pink preference... im going to try a tulip after this and maybe a prym (ive a pencil hold) ... the clover colours are just too jarring. I'd love the mindfulknit with a metal tip or to try the clovers in pastel colours.

I have a texture issue with the rubberized grips so I never liked using clovers. I'd rather use a skinny metal hook, or just not crochet at all. I've been using Furls hooks for years and love them, but I crochet like you do, so I'm holding more weight in the bottom of my hand. The heavier Furls hooks, with metal tips, have been a problem because of this. Now I'm wondering if the shape of the hooks is causing some strain in the lighter Furls hooks also. I haven't noticed a lot of in-between options, but you've inspired me to look! Thanks for the detailed video!
I bought a prym hook for the first time in Germany and fell in love with it. Im afraid that since its plastic it will snap at the tip one day. Like you said if they had a metal version of the Prym ergonomic hooks i would buy the whole set.
Great video. I miss my Susan Bates hooks but had to switch to a more comfortable hook. I have Clover Amour hooks, and Michaels ergo hooks now. I also have one Tulip crochet hook. The Tulip is a little short but I like it. I hated the Prym ergo hook. Glad I only bought one. Not sure why, maybe the shaft is too long, but it hurts my wrist to use it. Because the Prym was a fail I have not tried the Furls or the Ommi crochet hooks.
I use mostly Tulip and Clover - I have tried holding my hooks differently more like a knife and it works very well but 55 years of crocheting a certain way is hard to change.
Thank you for this! I got the Susan Bates Ergo hooks to try them and I REALLY dislike them! I'm still new to crocheting and trying to find the "right" style hook for me and how I hold it. (I'm a knife holder) I actually just called Michael's because I bought a hook a few weeks back and didn't know the brand of it. It's a Loops & Thread Aluminum Hook with an ergo handle. I think there may be mixed reviews of L&T and I don't know them well enough to have an opinion. That being said, I do actually like it the best out of the hooks I have, however; when I tried to find more, they don't have many size varieties and it seems that the handle has been updated from the one I have so I'm not sure I'll like the rest 😕 I'm back to square one. I may have to give the Clover Amour or the Tulip hooks a try. I do have one Clover hook but it's plastic. It works well but I think I'm more of an aluminum gal. Oh and thanks for mentioning your tidbit about the "cheeks" ! Haha! That is actually so helpful and has really helped me to identify what I don't like!
I have so many sets it's ridiculous... I found out years ago (in the beginning of my Crochet obsession ) I'm a Boye fan! Susan Bates always gave me a hard time ! But I know that there are alot of people who love S.B. ... it's a very personal thing. For me Clover, Tulip and Mindful ,really are my absolute favorites ! But I still buy everything new that comes out ;)
I love the Andromeda streamline hooks from furls but only for the colours :) other than those I am a total Clover amour girl, I cannot crochet without them.
I agree! I realize that I spent more time admiring the streamline colors than I enjoyed using them. Back to clover, feels comfortable and gets the job done.
I am a Furls Girl and I prefer a “ Cheeky” head. I find them to be the perfect combination of Boye and Susan Bates WITHOUT Boye’s roundness. The wider handles give me such comfort. Using a Furls takes commitment from the user. The reason being: You have bad crochet habits that you need to correct, like you spinning your hook. I did the same and using Furls has kept me from doing this as well. I have other hooks, but I always reach for my Furls.
I found an inexpensive brand on Amazon, Coopay, that has the polymer clay handles (large enough to make a difference) but the shaft of the hook is still a nice length.

I know it's not tapered because i can't keep the yarn from slipping with tapered hooks, but can use Clover amour. Maybe someone else knows more ❤️❤️❤️
My favorite hooks are Susan Bates and Clover. I am not fond of Boye hooks at all. I tend to hold my hook both ways and it depends on what project I am working with. I love this tutorial because I never realized how crochet hooks are not created equal.
You know I don’t like Furls due to the grabbing and now I think the ‘cheeks’ is what’s happening. I think I’m a hook addict as well as a yarn addict. I have multiples of the size hooks I use most often like a 3.5, 4 and 4.5. I bet I have five 4 mm hooks and all different brands. I love the name you came up with for the side of the hook. I think the big white one with no cheeks (lol) is a Susan Bates luxite crochet hooks - saw in store today at Michaels and Joanns and snatched a few up! The smaller sizes have cheeks and the larger ones do not...
Hi, I have very small hands. In fact, they are child size. So, I much prefer my tulips or my clovers to just about anything else. I just tried a.Ptyn call mom and didn’t like it at all. The shaft was too long and the handle was just uncomfortable. I do like my Susan also.. And you are right there is something nice about the pink antes. They are pretty. I have tried the Odyssey, and while I can use them, they do feel pretty big in my small hand. However, they are very pretty to look at. I have four odyssey hooks, each in a different color. The color correspond pretty much to my clovers . That way I know instantly what size I am using. I really don’t like those little stickers on the end. 😊
i wish the clover was a little longer so they didn't dig in to the squishy bit under my pinky (knife hold), i'm using some cheap no brand crochet hooks that are an inch longer than the clover armour, so feel really nice in my hand
I started crocheting just last year with Boye, Tried Clover Amore an really liked them but bought some Susan Bates and loved the inline shape. The only thing I would change is the thumb rest, I’d push it back a little. I hold my hook pencil style and don’t like the grip so close to the head and I wish they had some real ergonomic style, not that awful hard stick they have now. I’ve yet to try the Prym and won’t pay the money for the Furrls.
Hey, if you were to design your perfect hook, what would it be exactly? I have a small workshop and some manufacturing skill, I came here because I'm new to the hobby and I wanted to learn more, but with so many different styles and types that I saw in your video, I think there's an opportunity to make an even better hook than what is currently on the market. A hook with trimmed cheeks polished smooth to reduce friction with a point not so sharp as to split the yarn, a few different handle ergonomic shape options (one for each common style). Would you be willing to help me design and maybe test a hook? Again, I'm new to the hobby, my wife encouraged me to start and I got a "The Wobbles" learn to crochet kit and I'm enjoying it, but I found this video because I wanted to learn more about crochet hooks.

Cheekless all the way. However the Tulip's thumb rest makes my thumb hurt. The Prym I love rhe shape, but the plastic squeaks on a rylic yarn😅 The Clover Soft Touch I like the handle but not the fay head.
My favorites are addi color hooks. They're metal hooks with plastic handles. The clovers and tulips are too short for my hands, so don't work for me. Want to try the pryms , but also prefer metal hooks for the drag. The others I like are the bamboo handled metal hooks.

I had Susan bates and Boyd as hand me downs. I went on Amazon and read all reviews and went with the Clover. They’re perfect for me so I stopped looking. Looks like I lucked out on my first try. I love these informative you tubes. Good job!

I am in total agreement with you. I hold my hooks over hand and found through trial and error that my LOVEs are the Clover Amour and the Tulips. . A few of the Pryms are good too, but Susan Bates hooks are a no go for me. I won't bother with even trying the Furls. Thank you for sharing this info
Omg I never knew until ur video. It's definitely the cheeks! Makes me feel like I need to crochet loose because it gets caught but once past the cheek it wants to fall off sometimes. I hate Boyle hooks because of this! I'm going to try other tapered with skinny cheeks now!
Great point about the “cheeks”. I’ll have to pay attention now. I crochet overhand (knife not pen style) and started on Boye hooks originally. I have some Furls hooks, both streamline and Odyssey, that I do like, especially for larger sizes but they do tend to feel heavy over time. While I like the Clover Amours, and they are much easier on the wallet than Furls, the Clover’s I really like best are the gold Soft Touch, which surprised me based on reviews that compare them. To some degree it is trial and error depending on your crochet style. I may give the Tulips a try if I can ever find singles for a reasonable price, just to see if I like them, because they do have a good reputation overall.

I completely agree about “cheeks” and your ideal hook shape. I wish the Clover Amour had a slightly pointier head, a slightly longer tip, and that the grips were wider and longer on the smaller hook sizes. I guess I try a Prym, even though I’m all about the metal hook, too. Thanks!
Love my Tulip Rose Hook set. First set, I have ever bought…and I ended up buying two sets. My first hook was a Boye, just like my moms. I have tried SB, but I am not a fan.

Totally get the pink preference... im going to try a tulip after this and maybe a prym (ive a pencil hold) ... the clover colours are just too jarring. I'd love the mindfulknit with a metal tip or to try the clovers in pastel colours.

It’s just a preference, but I LOVE the Ommi hooks. They’re just as ergonomic as the Furls, but without the price.
That chunky white plastic hook is still sold in stores and I think it’s a Susan bates, I can’t remember tho
I’m a clover amour user, the tulip a close second.
I have a texture issue with the rubberized grips so I never liked using clovers. I'd rather use a skinny metal hook, or just not crochet at all. I've been using Furls hooks for years and love them, but I crochet like you do, so I'm holding more weight in the bottom of my hand. The heavier Furls hooks, with metal tips, have been a problem because of this. Now I'm wondering if the shape of the hooks is causing some strain in the lighter Furls hooks also. I haven't noticed a lot of in-between options, but you've inspired me to look! Thanks for the detailed video!
I bought a prym hook for the first time in Germany and fell in love with it. Im afraid that since its plastic it will snap at the tip one day. Like you said if they had a metal version of the Prym ergonomic hooks i would buy the whole set.
Great video. I miss my Susan Bates hooks but had to switch to a more comfortable hook. I have Clover Amour hooks, and Michaels ergo hooks now. I also have one Tulip crochet hook. The Tulip is a little short but I like it. I hated the Prym ergo hook. Glad I only bought one. Not sure why, maybe the shaft is too long, but it hurts my wrist to use it. Because the Prym was a fail I have not tried the Furls or the Ommi crochet hooks.
I use mostly Tulip and Clover - I have tried holding my hooks differently more like a knife and it works very well but 55 years of crocheting a certain way is hard to change.

Thank you for this! I got the Susan Bates Ergo hooks to try them and I REALLY dislike them! I'm still new to crocheting and trying to find the "right" style hook for me and how I hold it. (I'm a knife holder) I actually just called Michael's because I bought a hook a few weeks back and didn't know the brand of it. It's a Loops & Thread Aluminum Hook with an ergo handle. I think there may be mixed reviews of L&T and I don't know them well enough to have an opinion. That being said, I do actually like it the best out of the hooks I have, however; when I tried to find more, they don't have many size varieties and it seems that the handle has been updated from the one I have so I'm not sure I'll like the rest 😕 I'm back to square one. I may have to give the Clover Amour or the Tulip hooks a try. I do have one Clover hook but it's plastic. It works well but I think I'm more of an aluminum gal.
Oh and thanks for mentioning your tidbit about the "cheeks" ! Haha! That is actually so helpful and has really helped me to identify what I don't like!

I have so many sets it's ridiculous... I found out years ago (in the beginning of my Crochet obsession ) I'm a Boye fan! Susan Bates always gave me a hard time ! But I know that there are alot of people who love S.B. ... it's a very personal thing.
For me Clover, Tulip and Mindful ,really are my absolute favorites ! But I still buy everything new that comes out ;)
I love the Andromeda streamline hooks from furls but only for the colours :) other than those I am a total Clover amour girl, I cannot crochet without them.
I agree! I realize that I spent more time admiring the streamline colors than I enjoyed using them. Back to clover, feels comfortable and gets the job done.
I am a Furls Girl and I prefer a “ Cheeky” head. I find them to be the perfect combination of Boye and Susan Bates WITHOUT Boye’s roundness. The wider handles give me such comfort. Using a Furls takes commitment from the user. The reason being: You have bad crochet habits that you need to correct, like you spinning your hook. I did the same and using Furls has kept me from doing this as well. I have other hooks, but I always reach for my Furls.

I found an inexpensive brand on Amazon, Coopay, that has the polymer clay handles (large enough to make a difference) but the shaft of the hook is still a nice length.

I know it's not tapered because i can't keep the yarn from slipping with tapered hooks, but can use Clover amour. Maybe someone else knows more ❤️❤️❤️
My favorite hooks are Susan Bates and Clover. I am not fond of Boye hooks at all. I tend to hold my hook both ways and it depends on what project I am working with. I love this tutorial because I never realized how crochet hooks are not created equal.
You know I don’t like Furls due to the grabbing and now I think the ‘cheeks’ is what’s happening. I think I’m a hook addict as well as a yarn addict. I have multiples of the size hooks I use most often like a 3.5, 4 and 4.5. I bet I have five 4 mm hooks and all different brands. I love the name you came up with for the side of the hook. Cheeks 😂 I’m going to start thinking of hooks this way whenever I find one that’s not smooth
I think the big white one with no cheeks (lol) is a Susan Bates luxite crochet hooks - saw in store today at Michaels and Joanns and snatched a few up! The smaller sizes have cheeks and the larger ones do not...

Hi, I have very small hands. In fact, they are child size. So, I much prefer my tulips or my clovers to just about anything else. I just tried a.Ptyn call mom and didn’t like it at all. The shaft was too long and the handle was just uncomfortable. I do like my Susan also.. And you are right there is something nice about the pink antes. They are pretty.
I have tried the Odyssey, and while I can use them, they do feel pretty big in my small hand. However, they are very pretty to look at. I have four odyssey hooks, each in a different color. The color correspond pretty much to my clovers . That way I know instantly what size I am using. I really don’t like those little stickers on the end.

i wish the clover was a little longer so they didn't dig in to the squishy bit under my pinky (knife hold), i'm using some cheap no brand crochet hooks that are an inch longer than the clover armour, so feel really nice in my hand

I started crocheting just last year with Boye, Tried Clover Amore an really liked them but bought some Susan Bates and loved the inline shape. The only thing I would change is the thumb rest, I’d push it back a little. I hold my hook pencil style and don’t like the grip so close to the head and I wish they had some real ergonomic style, not that awful hard stick they have now. I’ve yet to try the Prym and won’t pay the money for the Furrls.
How cheeky, I suspect my preference may also run with less cheekiness.

I have a small workshop and some manufacturing skill, I came here because I'm new to the hobby and I wanted to learn more, but with so many different styles and types that I saw in your video, I think there's an opportunity to make an even better hook than what is currently on the market. A hook with trimmed cheeks polished smooth to reduce friction with a point not so sharp as to split the yarn, a few different handle ergonomic shape options (one for each common style).
Would you be willing to help me design and maybe test a hook?

My favorites are addi color hooks. They're metal hooks with plastic handles. The clovers and tulips are too short for my hands, so don't work for me. Want to try the pryms , but also prefer metal hooks for the drag. The others I like are the bamboo handled metal hooks.
Hi, could you recommend a wooden handle metal tip hook that you like? I love the feel and look of wooden knitting needles but the drag with crochet is irritating.
I'm a crochet hook snob... I only use Clover hooks... unless I need a larger size then I'll go to a no name brand as long as it's metal...
