My answer: It's a throwback to the 1954 film and it dealt with the dilemma faced by Serizawa in THAT film where he had to use a devastatingly powerful weapon against Godzilla in order to save humanity at the cost of his life. Same thing here, the only difference, it's a weapon meant to SAVE Godzilla but still at the cost of Serizawa's life.

I never saw this as a pro nuclear weaponry in all honesty. My first impression is that this is a big dumb action monster movie done right. My later watch I kinda see it as a debate between three POV; the anthropocentrist, the eco-terrorist, and the deep ecologist. The 1st party is represented by the UN and mainly by Mark Russell. They see the titans as a threat to humanity existance/dominance and in dire need of elimination, they don't favor humanity and cause loss to us thus bye bye. The 2nd party ofc argues that no, this is how it was supposed to be, man got no right to eliminate them. In fact they must surrender to them and let them take control, since their existance matter much more in the grand scheme of things beyond anthropocentic view. Ofc represented by Emma and Jonah. The 3rd party is Serizawa who sees a need in co-existance with nature. Not thinking humanity got the rights to control nature, but not necessarily sacrifice humanity as a whole for nature. But both party needs to learn to play out their respective role to maintain balance. I also kinda see the usage of nuke to revive Goji is more of an allegory for proper usage of nuclear as a whole, not just as a weapon. I know Serizawa did used a bomb, yea sure. But the act itself to me is more of a proper usage of nuclear technology to revitalize nature that mankind had damaged previously. A grave mistake that caused them their chance of survival. With the oxygen destroyer, mankind overstep their roles, as suppose to let Goji plays out his. They ended up almost killing Goji, and they need to get it right quickly, kinda like environmental issue. Maybe the scene meant to potray a usage of nuclear as an energy source rather than a weapon to kill. Like how nuclear energy is a more cleaner source of energy (to my limited knowledge), thus using them properly could help nature revitalized and once again play their roles. Just like how Goji able to do his job after the use of atomic energy. Granted, irl it wouldn't be so direct, but the less emissions could gave nature a break and a chance to repair itself. I would see the final battle with Ghidorah more of nature fighting back against the unnatural existance that disturb the survival of life on earth, environmental issue, one that was caused by humanity and now humanity needs to help fix their mistake by assisting nature, not overtake nature's role. Granted Burning Goji does feel like a tactical nuke dropping to a targeted area, but I feel like if you see the movie as whole representing humanity's foolishness and environmental issue, I kinda see it as a triumphant victory. Humanity believe they are above nature > humanity makes the mistake of thinking they can control or dictate nature > humanity created or caused an unnatural existance that threatens all lives on earth > humanity tries to take the band aid solution or the easiest way out, but it failed or make things worse > humanity caused the dying of nature > humanity learns their mistake and accept their place as part of nature > humanity assisted nature to revitalized and allowing them to play out their role in restoring themself > thus nature rids off the unnatural existance and restore balance. This is how I see KoTM pass the big dumb kaiju movie first impression. Especially since I feel like MV Goji is based on or similar to the concept of Gaia Theory, that nature could restore itself and everything in nature is a part of system that sustain life as a whole. I can't really say if this is my favorite message or not, but I do love it. That is if I didn't overanalyze something like Evangelion fans. I still chuckles whenever I recall how the whole cross thing in Eva is just cuz Anno thinks it's cool, whilst the fandom for years prior had theorized the complex meaning behind it.

Well it's Serizawa who has to make the choice, and it's a difficult one for him, so yeah Technically speaking what Serizawa and the film are saying is that we should return to a time like the ancient ruins where we provide Godzilla with worship and sustenance (I don't think it's a coincidence the temple was built in a radioactive spot), and the only way we can do that now is give him the nuke and fight alongside him. And that concept needs a whole lot more time and space to elaborate on. I think Dougherty vastly overstepped his bounds by introducing concepts that big on his one solo movie in the universe that was in development the same time as the sequel/crossover that was the last definitively planned one. People blame GvK and Adam Wingard for not following up on everything KOTM established including the end credits, and to a degree, Wingard chose not to continue aspects of that film, but it is an insane ask to tether that much to every subsequent film when it doesn't even really work retroactively to G14 (The MUTOs incubated in radiation, there was no indication they gave any off, and Janjira would have been the instance to show that. While there was still plant overgrowth, it wasn't for those reasons. There was not high levels of radiation registering there because HokMuto was eating it all)

(I mean, Godzilla shoots atomic radiation afterall) But the movie never does that. Instead, it's obsessed referencing older Godzilla movies. Almost like the movie is saying... "Hey remember Serizawa's death from the original 1954 movie? Well, look we're doing the same thing! Isn't this cool?" Or, "Hey do you remember Burning Godzilla? Yeah, we're doing that in our movie too!" "Do you remember the Oxygen Destroyer?" But do these references make sense? Serizawa was against using nukes on Godzilla in the last movie. Now he's cool with it. (The movie makes Serizawa look like a hypocrite) And the way the Oxygen Destroyer was just thrown into there... ugh. Also, I doubt the people of Boston are happy that Godzilla leveled their home.
You can tell by watching the scene that Serizawa is regretting what he’s going to do. Much like Daisuke Serizawa. And why would Ishiro Serizawa build the Oxygen Destroyer if he’s committed to researching and protecting Godzilla.
Serizawa's arc in KOTM explains why he uses the bomb on Godzilla, so that's not actually poor writing. This kinda reminds me of how Godzilla vs King Ghidorah has been interpreted as a pro-Imperialist piece that glorifies the actions of Imperial Japan and concludes that imperialism and nationalism is the future Japan should follow. This was the reading of the movie I believed in for the longest time, which actually made GvKG one of my least favorite Heisei movies because of how messed up that message is. However, I did read a review awhile back that interpreted the film as being more critical of Imperialism, since it's Future Japan's aggressive expansion that led to the Futurians becoming terrorists. They also interpreted the scene where the Japanese war veteran turned leader gets killed by Godzilla as him realizing that he's leading Japan down the wrong path and accepting that he shouldn't be the country's future. The review shifted my perspective on the movie a bit, so I'm planning on rewatching it sometime soon to decide for myself what I think the movie is trying to say.
I'm not entirely sure that reading holds. We have to understand that right around this time, Japan's real life economy plummeted and the US became a Lone Superpower. I read a paper about the strategies for contemporary propaganda a while ago, and the film actually fits those extremely well. I think the points were demonizing opposition and making the actual oppressors look good (the Americans are evil and stupid against the virtuous Japanese garrison, and the indigenous people that the Japanese garrison displaced, represented by the dinosaur actually fight for the Japanese) and using the past as a jumping off point for a propagandistic future (the film using a fictitious past battle won by the Japanese to justify how the guy that won it for them would rebuild the economy multiple times and make them the Lone Superpower if only that one battle had gone differently is incredibly concerning). I will concede that it is strange to have Godzilla be the one that kills a Shindo that chooses to die, since all the Futurians had to do to prevent the future was assassinate only Shindo before 45, 54, 84 or any of the times he helps rebuild Japan. You even see that in how they send King Ghidorah to attack Shindo's buildings, but we have to remember this movie is very poorly written in the time travel aspect (C Monster has a very good video that just came out). I don't think we really should trust the Futurians that all they were trying to do was level the playing field because they are still terrorists. That said, Shindo is still a good guy and has a privately owned nuclear submarine he keeps in foreign waters. In my estimation, this is the kind of movie where whatever it tried to say, it did so so incompetently that you can't in good faith use the full film to come to that conclusion

The biggest issue with watching the original from an enjoyment perspective is that the English speakers they chose are worse. "Take that, you dinosaur" is bad in the dub but somehow better than the original if I recall correctly

Serizawa's sacrifice was the scene that ruined KOTM for me. Having the character named after the tormented scientist from the 1954 original intentionally detonate a nuclear weapon to save the day really rubs me the wrong way. It's like making a Batman movie where Bruce Wayne sticks up a liquor store. Sure, you could argue it's a different interpretation, but it gives the impression of not really understanding what the character is about. Kinda' reminds me of Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. "We've got a giant radioactive monster and the only solution is an even more radioactive bullet!" Americans are quite bad at nuclear allegory movies because they've only dropped the bombs. American Godzilla movies are so weak in being able to imitate Gojira that they really are more accurately adaptations of Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, which is sorta' dull and preachy and superficial compared to Gojira.

Thank for saying “Nuclear weapons” and not just saying “nuclear power” and nuclear weapons is a more pacific term cause nuclear power could mean nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons, or both which could be misleading depending on the words you saying nuclear weapons are bad is objectively true but saying nuclear power as a whole(nuclear energy and weapons) or just nuclear energy is bad is objectively false as nuclear energy is actually safe go watch Kyle hill if you want to learn more, also want to clarify nuclear bombs only leave radiation if it’s a ground burst, air burst the most common usage of these weapons doesn’t leave radiation as the particles have nothing to attach to. this is why Hiroshima and Nagasaki aren’t waste lands and are cities doing perfectly fine and in Hiroshima’s case thriving with a population of 1 million compared to the about 100,000 in 1945
Serizawa's sacrifice was the scene that ruined KOTM for me. Having the character named after the tormented scientist from the 1954 original intentionally detonate a nuclear weapon to save the day really rubs me the wrong way. It's like making a Batman movie where Bruce Wayne sticks up a liquor store. Sure, you could argue it's a different interpretation, but it gives the impression of not really understanding what the character is about.

@@tsuimii Well that was the impression I got from looking into the people saying KOTM says the answer to humanity’s problems is “drop a bunch of nukes on bad things”, like Emmet Asher-Perrin, and pretty much any KOTM detractor whose politics are left leaning.

Kinda' reminds me of Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. "We've got a giant radioactive monster and the only solution is an even more radioactive bullet!" Americans are quite bad at nuclear allegory movies because they've only dropped the bombs. American Godzilla movies are so weak in being able to imitate Gojira that they really are more accurately adaptations of Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, which is sorta' dull and preachy and superficial compared to Gojira.
