Gerhard Lang is credited with creating the first advent calendar in the 19th century, inspired by childhood memories and a desire to build anticipation for Christmas. The story goes that Lang's mother would mark the days leading up to Christmas on a simple chalkboard, and young Gerhard was captivated by the daily countdown. As he grew older, Lang wanted to recreate that sense of excitement and anticipation for the holiday season.In 1851, he produced the inaugural advent calendar, consisting of 24 tiny, handcrafted doors-one to be opened each day from December 1st to Christmas Eve. Behind each door, he hid a festive image or a small treat, setting the foundation for a tradition that would spread worldwide. Land had to close his calendar factory in the 30s because of world war 2 cardboard was rationed and there was a ban on calendars with images. It wasn’t until 1946 that Richard sell mar in Germany started producing advent calendars again. Chocolate ones started being sold in the 50s as they became more commercial, today advent calendar can have teas, beauty and even toys
