@CarlaLalliMusic I'm Cuban American so beans are definitely comfort food to me :) White beans with smoked hams, chorizo and greens (Caldo Gallego) one of my favs, Red beans also with smokey ham hocks, different types of chorizos yum yum,, traditional Cuban black beans (with the amazing sofrito) to have as a side to a garlicky pork roast or weeknight steak. Beans, beans, beans!!!! Thank you for sharing this one! I have a pantry filled with Rancho Gordo beans - I will be making your recipe tonight! Cheers Carla!!!! xoxo from Los Angeles
For an interim solution, there are cookbooks for one, most of which have a lot of comforting recipes (not so many recipes for virtuous salads). I can't recommend any singular one, but there's a lot of good stuff out there
Seldom do I comment on videos, but this one was lovely. You said so much in revealing so little. Sending love to you and your family, transitions are tough. However, as a child of “uncoupling,” I can say it's often for the best. And as a college student living abroad, I wholeheartedly support the "personal pot" message. This should absolutely become a series or your next book.. cooking for one!
I got divorced 5 years ago and (this sounds weird to say, but) it was the best thing that ever happened to me. It needed to happen. I'm sorry you're going through it, Carla, but we ❤ you. Second another person's comment that a "personal pot" cookbook would be amazing and would go well with the cookbook of yours on my shelf 😄 I'm actually engaged now...But when I was alone, I discovered your vids back with Bon Appetit and have followed you since. You've brought so much comfort to my days. Sending lots of bean love and comfort your way.
I spent last Winter going through divorce also and I haven't had my own kitchen between then and now. I'm so glad to be back in my own space with my own kitchen. Cooking can be so therapeutic. Thank you!
This is one of my favorite videos you’ve done, I’m recently without a roommate and the silence is sometimes overwhelming. Cooking for myself really helps pull me back. I really appreciate you being vulnerable with your audience!
This came out on the perfect day. I got home from work feeling defeated and lonely. I watched this and was inspired to take care of myself and throw together a weird cauliflower, black bean, harissa soup situation and I’m excited :)
I don't comment on UA-cam videos ever.. but I just moved into an apartment alone and am in a total state of transition. Your words and excitement for cooking for yourself made me so happy. I can't wait to make this and cheers my bowl of comfort soup in your honor!
Thanks. Living alone, cooking large amounts fills my freezer and reduces opportunity for variety. However, it doesn’t stop my cooking. I love the kitchen. Great idea.
as a coupled person, I still find the reminder to care for myself and be intentional with myself really helpful. sometimes you need to make a pot of beans and greens to carve out space for yourself in your own life. doing things for your own pleasure, no one else’s! 🌟
Beans and greens are my favorite meal. And there are so many variations possible, changing the bean. the green, and the seasoning. Butter beans with turnip greens, grainy mustard, caraway, and a little beer (maybe a bit of maple or sugar) is a favorite. It's also good with bratwurst, but doesn't need it.
My cooking really evolved when I was suddenly living on my own! I no longer had to cater to a picky eater so I could explore what I was interested in. There is something beautiful about being able to cook for yourself
🎈couldn’t be better timing for this video. Thank you for giving us a recipe and reminder for genuine self-care that happens to be in the form of some food magic. ✨
🥬 didnt know how to tell you i really liked the video, so i went and searched for a leafy green vegetable emoji. i hope it does a good job of telling you this was great. thanks carla
Super Witchy!?! I'm in. ;) I am solo in my sixties and I LOVE it. I love to cook, and it really is so self-nurturing to cook yourself a nutritious meal and then thank yourself for cooking it.
When I got back from India 12 years ago I was so in love with the food I took a class. One of the first things I learned was to 'perfume your oil'. So that can be peppercorns, cardamom pods, other things. But mostly it's building the foundation. After that the sky's the limit.
This was soul-nourishing Carla. You made me laugh and tear up with your lovely way of describing a new stage in your life that is so relatable. Really beautiful content, thank you!
🎈 currently going through the beginnings of separation and divorce as a 33 year old, which is to say I know I have so much life ahead. Heading into winter feels like the perfect and also the worst time, but this recipe and your light give me some hope for the lightness on the other side 🎈I look forward to hunkering down this winter and caring for myself and my two boys 🩷
Oh yummm. My favorite beans and greens are also so nostalgic for me. Broth made from leftover ham bone, great northern beans and kale. Brings tears to my eyes. So simple, nourishing and delicious. ❤
Fun fact: my favorite restaurant is a country cooking buffet called “Beans and Greens”. They even catered my wedding! This looks delicious! Praying for you as you continue to navigate the single life. I know you’re rocking it 🩵 Love you Carla!!
Love this. Life and cooking go hand in hand for me. It has carried me through many changes/challenges. I could relate to every single moment of this video! Thanks.
I'm so glad I found your channel! I love how you just keep pouring the olive oil in. I grew up in the midwest where spices are butter, sugar, salt and pepper. My sister-in-law is from Spain and I'm so grateful to her for the introduction to spices. I can't wait to make this!
This is so great it feels like a vulnerable but very warm hug - I sent it to my own mum as an inspiration video for accepting and embracing being alone and I’m still trying to get her into cooking! What an under explored way of cooking too. More of this please!! Sending lots of good vibes for the tough times too.
Thank you for sharing this. ❤🎈 I used cooking a lot to help deal with grief (lost two close family members only months before the 2020 COVID lockdowns here in Australia). it was a very emotional time for my family, and we cooked side-by-side to help live through it Now as a single person, cooking for myself can still be a labour of love! taking care of ourselves one meal at a time, and fed is best
My gosh Carla I absolutely adore you. While I can’t fully relate, I recently moved cross country and got a place to myself. I, too, spend a lot of time alone. I really appreciate your perspective and approach to it-alone doesn’t mean lonely and it can be a beautiful restorative thing. PLEASE keep the personal recipes coming! I love Self Care Carla!!
🎈 „Just getting the vibe“ is honestly all i'm doing with Cooking-UA-cam and even before that with Chef-TV. I rarely ever cook whats presented, but just observing and learning about basic principles helped me a lot in my day to day cooking. Things like "dont stir like crazy or theres no browning; heat your spices, otherwise they just boil and dont get to their full potential" and so on. love it! Much love from grey-ish Berlin xx
Since my separation, I spend every other week alone, which is still not always easy. But then during these silent weeks I celebrate exactly what you are talking about here, dear Carla: I do myself good, above all by first buying loads of great products and then preparing delicious food for myself day after day - in the best case scenario ;-) Which I then eat every evening with time and peace and full of enjoyment and pleasure. It helps and I wouldn't want to do without it.
thank you for this!! and for talking about a vulnerable topic - i'm going through one of the roughest times of my life (mental health stuff) and am having to rebuild my sense of purpose and self esteem from scratch, basically, and cooking is one of the very special, magical things that NEVER fails to bring me back to myself. it grounds me, excites me and reminds me that i can always choose to make the next moment count. xo
Wishing nothing but the best for you and your loved ones. You’ve been an endless source of comfort during the last couple years of my life. I hope that all that you’ve given me comes flooding back to you at the times when you need it.
🎈🎈🎈 I love to cook, but when you live alone and you don’t want endless leftovers, it can be tricky. Love this. Also love this empowered NYC wise aunt energy.
I've always loved Carla's ability to wax philosophical while remaining her goofy, endearing self. And I love her longstanding championing on self care. Greeny beanies sound delish, and I will always love a happy, healthy, healing Carla. Thank you for addressing such a sensitive topic in such a genuinely "you" way
Yes to nights at home alone with your favourite comfort food! May we all learn to appreciate the beauty of being alone 🥰🥰 Thank you for demonstrating this in such a positive light, Carla! ❤️❤️
🎈 Isn't it incredible that something as simple as a pot of beans and greens can be so profoundly comforting? Thank you for sharing your gifts and for not shying away from your humanity. The internets and the world is brighter because of you. 🎈
This is exactly how I cook most days. No recipe, no exact end goal. Just a general idea about what I want to eat and using my intuition and what's kicking around my fridge and pantry to make something comforting and delicious.
Wonderful. I’ve gone from cooking to three children plus friends to just me. I thought I’d lost my passion. Thank you for your many kindnesses. You’re the bean queen. Can’t wait to cook again.
I haven’t felt like cooking for myself since being in my new place. Thank you so much Carla for being vulnerable and sharing your magic with us! I REALLY needed that spark to get back in my kitchen ✨❤🎈
Carla I just went through a breakup and this is exactly what I needed to see to get me cooking for myself again!!! My mental has been in the toilet but I can feel myself mustering the energy to take care of myself with food again
Thank you for being so vulnerable with us Carla. You are wonderful and inspiring. Absolutely loooove your videos. You have such a fabulous vibe and I am here for it all day, everyday ❤

Me too!
Agreed!
I was coming on here to say the same thing 🙌
For an interim solution, there are cookbooks for one, most of which have a lot of comforting recipes (not so many recipes for virtuous salads). I can't recommend any singular one, but there's a lot of good stuff out there
I liked this comment so much the 👍 button wasn't enough, I kicked into the air as I did so🦵👟🤌 but until there is a button for *that* - I wrote this 😁😎
Well done Carla for making a negative into a positive and teaching us self care and self love with the humble bean. 🙏🏻
Came here to say something like this, but you said it so much better than I could have hoped to. 👍
"Carla taking care of Carla." Love! And please stop apologizing for being the full-blown goddess that you are!

You putting that frozen stock right into the pot is such a great example of why I am devoted to your videos.
Wait-are there actually people who thaw their stock?

I like Carla taking care of Carla. Way to heal. You remember, you are cherished for all the wisdom you give in these videos.
This is giving massive later seasons Nigella energy but still
uniquely you. And once again you are UA-cam food hero!!!
The soup and bread look delicious (and yes, very comforting!). We love you, Carla! Thank you for being you!
love this woman so much!❤

This looks like an amazing meal to make on a cold, autumn/winter day.
A Queen being a Queen. We love you, Carla. Thank you for sharing and for this delicious recipe. ❤
I'm taking a drink every time she says 'personal pot of beans and greens."
🎈 Thank you, Carla.
Wonderful. I’ve gone from cooking to three children plus friends to just me. I thought I’d lost my passion. Thank you for your many kindnesses. You’re the bean queen. Can’t wait to cook again.
I haven’t felt like cooking for myself since being in my new place.

Carla I just went through a breakup and this is exactly what I needed to see to get me cooking for myself again!!! My mental has been in the toilet but I can feel myself mustering the energy to take care of myself with food again
I love Carla's therapy sessions.
Carla done casted a spell on all of us huh? Jokes aside, she's such a comforting force that I can't have enough of. Here's to more power to all of us!
🎈 And wow, so very magical! Thank you, Carla!
Thanks!
Thank you for being so vulnerable with us Carla. You are wonderful and inspiring. Absolutely loooove your videos. You have such a fabulous vibe and I am here for it all day, everyday ❤
Carla I love you. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing this all. I also would love more solo sized meals as I often just cook for myself.
This video is a public service, and you’re fabulous. Thank you always ❤🎈
this video healed a part of me I didn’t know needed to heal
Adding anchovies is low key genius. Love you, Carla!
Thanks for this video, Carla! You brought attention to what a lot of folks go through, which is that relationships don't always work out. And the way you put it was perfectly diplomatic, and hats off to that. It's very important to take care of yourself, and I'm glad you made a video to reinforce that.
Thank you for sharing your journey. It is really helpful to see someone being positive about the changes in their life as I navigate changes in my own.
i have never resonated with a cooking video more than this one. thank you for sharing the joys or nurturing yourself within hardship.
🎈🎈🎈🎈need this as a series!!!!
omg solo comfort food is a great concept and since i just moved into my own place i would need a million of these 🎈
Not single but this is still what I needed this morning! Hubs and I got back from sunny Sardinia 3 days ago and it has been raining constantly. We both WFH and I am so tired of thinking about what's for lunch( we do take turns). I'm putting this on to simmer going for a short run in the rain and can look forward to this to warm us up for lunch!
Thank you for putting the frozen stock in the pot. That is 100% something I would do and have done while cooking for myself.
🎈
God! You have NO idea how much I needed this video today-please make this a series!
🎈
🎈Thank you Carla, this video really spoke to my heart...and my stomach!🥰
This is so sweet...❤
🎈🎈I love cooking beans, and they're my comfort food. I grew up in NM, and pintos were the most common dried bean we ate. The fun thig about being my own cook is all the different beans I've discovered, and all the different flavors and seasonings I've learned to use. Thanks so much for this simple, comfort food plan.
We love you, Carla!
Most mornings or lunch times, I make a personal pot of greens and beans, and I just came across this video. I like to spice it up with chilis, and sometimes I add an egg if I'm extra hungry. Mine is not a soup.
Carla, you are my comfort watch! Watched this video while eating soup and also recently uncoupled. Thank you!! ❤️❤️
This looks so good, I’m liking & commenting for the algorithm. I actually cannot eat legumes, or at least I can’t eat more than 2 tbl (sorry, I’m American I have no idea what the real measurement is), due to a GI disorder, but I loved food like this in my younger years! Now I make do with greens & potatoes cooked with a gnarly chunk of pig & bone, whatever’s cheap, usually a hock, but with beans, it’s heaven. So many delicious bean dishes & here’s a tip for very busy solo cooks: I love the deliciousness of bean dishes made from dried beans, but even after 10 yrs of cooking lessons in 4H, and being known as an excellent cook, I never did master dried beans. Canned are definitely still good, they’re fully cooked, & why they are dramatically more expensive than dried, they are still cheap compared to all other proteins! I can cook pulses but not legumes from dry, but my bean dishes still always get rave reviews. I can no longer digest beans so I don’t make them often, but sometimes you gotta make someone black bean soup or hummus or vegetarian chili!
Carla, your whimsical personality brings something so beautiful to the world. Sorry you're having to adjust to this change, but if nothing else you seem like a person who is well adjusted enough to get through it as well as anyone could. All the best.
My comfort food is garlic parmesan mashed potatoes, saving the extra for breakfast with scrambled eggs. What a huge relief to know that I can be uncoupled and still care for me. May your heart always be this open. ❤
"One of the great immersive activities." You have finally put into words why I like to cook!
