      Thanks for the great comment Darren. If you haven't joined the Amazon 360 group (its free) yet, I think that will help you. Sorry to hear about your job. My mother went through a job loss in her 60's many years ago, unable to get hired again she went into early retirement. It was a struggle that has seared the importance of self employment (one of many reasons) in my brain. Let me know if I can help you.

    Great vid.....I just started two months ago as a complete newbie on ebay and have done ok i guess for someone who honestly knew zero about reselling...so far at about a grand per month in profit so far. Im so new and out of touch that I had to re learn how to even use my desktop. I set up a nice office in spare bedroom and off i went. I have been watching so so many utube vids and reading for hours every night on the subject. Im so pumped that i stumbled on your vids. Just AWESOME....i have to say thank you so much for the information....im losing my day job as a self employed project manager ...my big clients are retiring and moving out of state. Im determined to make this my new job. Seriously...i cant thank you enough for offering this awesome information. Your methodical and very encouraging ....if you can do so well at this with all your other duties......well....its made me feel that i can to as i do not have prob near the responsibilities you have as a mom and home school teacher. Just letting you know that you have helped someone in a very profound way.....THANK YOU. If i may ask you a question?.....I am totally unfamiiar with Amazon....but im now gonna try to figure it out ........FBA sounds awesome. Is there an APP for scanning for Ebay?....Do you have preferences on what should go on Ebay versus Amazon FBA?.....If so...what might you suggest?......Do you mind if i ask you for advice from time to time?....I understand that not everyone likes to give away their secrets etc.....but one never knows unless they ask .....Again....THANK YOU so very much for helping others through your vids and insight.....learning what i have so far from them has given me hope and a little less fear of the future for myself and family....my wife is an executive within her company and does very well but losing my income is going to be very scary for me .....people such as yourself gives others that lil extra boost of confidence they may need to get them through....many many thanks for being you!!!

      yohonamon It sounds like you are doing really well. A $1000 a month profit at the beginning is a very good start!!! There is such a learning curve when you are starting. I still continuously have to push through the curve of new printers, expanding my business, website development, etc. I would love to tell you that it will end, but it's more like you get better at pushing through and being proud of your progress at the end.
      The best thing for you to do now that you are losing your day job (congratulations by the way, and I really do think a congrats is in order because your lifestyle can be anything you want now) is to get the ebay, amazon, and profit bandit apps on your smartphone. The ebay app is the only one I know for ebay (I could be wrong) and the other two are for Amazon. Then get your ebay, paypal and Amazon accounts running smoothly. Print out and read all guidelines on Amazon Then get that first box out to amazon (its the hardest step, force yourself to do it in two days time). After that, the sky really is the limit!! You will get out of it what you put in it. It will have to gradually build, but if you treat it like a business you can almost set your monthly income. I put in more and more hours in order to make more and more money, but to me, it doesn't seem like work. I watch youtube and netflix while listing. I garage sale, thrift store, and shop for a living!!! I can push pause and live my life and talk to my kid ANY time I want.
      You will do great! My website is forming so keep checking back on www.entrepreneurgirl.net because I hope to have step-by-steps up there soon :) You can ask me a question any time you want... I don't keep secrets. I have a heart for people living the best life they can and I honestly believe ebay / Amazon can play a big part in that.
      Thanks for all the awesome words to me. It gives me encouragement that I am actually helping people.

    • @yohonamon
      @yohonamon 10 років тому

      Trust me...you are helping people....its scary....i had a really good job....but this is also a dream for me to do this....i really do appreciate all your vids and help.....not many people like you out there these days. Ive learned alot and been super encouraged to make it happen and your vids have played a huge part in that....im slow...very...lol...but i know at some point this will click faster for me. Retail arbitrage is harder than i thot....or maybe im so new at it....its just hard to me....my wife said ill get better at finding stuff and it will smooth out....crossing my fingers........thanks again and many many thanks again for the vids.....it really does help....they are super encouraging....
      Scott

    Okay, Tracy. So, I went out with my 2 & 5-year-old yesterday as well, equipped with lolly pop bribes (did-NOT-work, lol). I found some items that were going for $7-8 FBA in Kid's collectible stationery on Amazon for a dollar. I thought that was a great way to test the water. So, far my item is the lowest, but not advertised on the product detail page because it is not free shipping. It's been a few days, but no grabbers yet :/..and with only a potential $2 profit for each after Amazon fees not incl. FBA'S. I am almost thinking going bulk, because after all that- first-time-list hassle, I rather have more qty I am thinking....So discouraged so far. I know I have a great eye for deals, but ooo-weee that was a lot of work for items that are not moving. Perhaps all those clearance items are on clearance for a reason. They don't move.

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  9 років тому +1

      +Jessica A Getting started is the hardest part! Here's the 3 things that makes it a little easier when you keep them in mind when shopping 1) ranking is under 100k 2) Item will give you a $10 profit after fees 3) listed 3x purchase price 4) not a ton of other people selling item. It's always easier to buy in bulk and sell than shop for individual items. Consider online arbitrage, liquidations, and private label. And shopping online (without the kids) suuuuuuure is easier :)

      Thanks for the video suggestion. I have added it to my list. I use GoDaddy Bookeeping right now and have been fairly happy with it. Every time I source for inventory, I make a quick note of the value (ex: garage sale, date, $230 or Walmart, date, $47) and put it in GoDaddy, and keep all the receipts. Taxes are given to an accountant that my husband and I share (he has his own business, too).

    Very cool video and very helpful! I have a couple questions...my Husband and I are starting to run our own business and use FBA/Ebay..we do not have a huge amount of money to put into this...maybe $500 bucks or so. Are there items that sell better than others? For instance...finding things at goodwill/thrift stores/on clearance and such? I am just trying to find out what we should buy so we do not waste any money! Thanks!

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому +1

      Casey Corrier When I first started I was in the exact same boat. I started with garage sales because the profit margin is the greatest (you can buy items for $1 and resell them for $20). Grab any new in the box items you can for Amazon and anything interesting that looks like a good seller for ebay. Then I added new-in-the-box items from thrift stores like Goodwill for Amazon. I started with ebay and sold really anything that would give me a profit. Examples of good items are electronics, games, puzzles, vintage, and clothes for ebay. Then I added Amazon FBA with only books (stick to non fiction only as fiction doesn't pay) and have since added new in the box puzzles, games, anything still wrapped. ALWAYS scan using profit bandit (or another app like it) or you will make mistakes. Good luck!!!

    Great video! We have similar strategies... My strategy though is to NOT buy anything that I don't make MINIMUM of 3x my money on AFTER fee calculations and shipping guess-timations. So if I buy something for $5, it has to make $15 profit minimum after fees and shipping :)

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому +1

      Great strategy! The longer I list... the higher my bar :)

  • @EntrepreneurGirl
    @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому +1

    @MichaelBaker- The page wouldn't let me respond directly to your question, so I'm hoping you will see it posted here... In Florida, garage sales are everywhere and year round, probably much like Southern California. Different sellers target different item categories while shopping garage sales, because they are familiar with certain products, have had good experience with different type things, etc. When I go to a sale, the first thing I look for are new-in-the-box items (Amazon FBA). Secondly, electronics (high dollar on ebay). Thirdly, anything interesting, different, or unique (here you stumble on items from Africa or the like). I also look for vintage goods (high dollar on ebay). Some people will only shop clothes, because that's what they like... and I avoid clothes because I don't enjoy listing them. Affluent neighborhoods can be good if they don't price everything too high. I have a loop that I drive in my city that allows me to drive all main roads and look for signs. I normally hit thrift stores that I pass along the way :)

    Love your vids! I understand that we should be looking for 3x. But what about sales rank and/or determining how fast a product will sell? We don't want product sitting on the shelves. How do you determine if you find something at 3x and that will sell in a reasonable time?

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому +1

      Marc Possoff The sales ranking gives you a clue as to how fast something will sale. Also, consumables also have a tendency to sell quickly sometimes. The best scenerio is to scan until you find an item that's 3x and a low sales ranking (under say, 50,000). Although sales rank, good vs bad, can vary depending on the item. If you have limited inventory funds, try for low price to buy, 3x your money, and low sales rank. Another tip: if there isn;t much competition currently selling the item. For example, there have been times that I was the only FBA seller on a item. When this happens, most times it will sell fairly fast.

    Thank you for another amazing video! So when you say triple your money do you mean lets say the item is $15 in the store I would list on ebay for at least $45? I always give free shipping on ebay so I would have that cost plus ebay fees any advise and help is very much appreciated thanks again for all you do for the reselling community have a great weekend. Paul

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

      Paul Rhodes Yes, the 3x money is a "general rule" I have in my head when I shop. I have learned from doing this long enough now, that if I go below that line, I'm just not happy with my profit margin and if I make a big error, I can even be negative! However, scanning each item is the true test of whether you should purchase an item or not. I, too, do fast and free on ebay. In the 3x, I have calculated average shipping as well as amazon/ebay fees, but if you have large or heavy items (most of my items are light or media mail) then you would want to charge more. Another thought is that many times I make upwards of 10x my money (garage sale cowgirl boots bought for $5 and sold for $50) happens all the time... so I figure it all works out in the end... just don't go below that 3x (or as you put it, buy for $15 and list for $45). Hope that helps, Paul.

    Reason I ask the question about how to determine if a ordered product will sell is cash flow. I notice you buy stuff if you can triple your money at least. I understand that but I don't want stuff sitting on the shelf because I'm not in financial position to have things sit. I do have $500 to invest in inventory.

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

      Marc Possoff Yes, you are so right. When I first started especially, I needed items that would turn fast and/or didn't cost me very much to purchase (garage sale). As you make more money, you can afford to take more risk. Having said all that, I always look at sales ranking. The lower number the better and I tend to avoid anything over 100,000. If I find something with a number under 10,000, I buy several normally.

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому +1

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Amazon FBA because it is so easy and not time consuming at all. I still use ebay for vintage, or worn items, or for categories that aren't allowed on Amazon (beauty goods, etc). But now that I've gotten use to the processes of Amazon FBA... it's sooooo hard to go back to eBay. FBA packs, ships, and handles all customer service/returns. Which means I have more time to shop for better inventory and work on the forward momentum of my company. Having said that, I still believe in using both forums, because it makes better business sense to not have all your eggs in one basket. I do have a video on the FBA process (it's an hour long). I will work on getting a more concise version out for you soon :)

      happiehousewife Ebay sales away from home are tricky and my biggest complaint. Ultimately, I want work that I can do from ANYWHERE and ebay doesn't quite fit into that. Ebay now has a service similar to Amazon, where you can send items in, but I haven't gone that route yet. When I go out of town, I hire someone (normally a family member) to mail items for me. There is always the option of putting your account on "vacation mode" while gone, but like you said, buyers aren't always so happy about that. I will probably continue to ebay, in hopes of adding employees within the year that can handle it. If I find that I just can't fit ebay into the lifestyle I want, then I will work harder in other areas (website income, amazon, ebooks, etc) so I can eventually eliminate it completely. For now, I just do the best I can while away :)

      You are right on target with one of my concerns. I had never shipped chocolate and didn't dare travel with it to Florida... so I mailed one box to Amazon while in Indiana and gave one to my mom as a gift. I wasn't sure how it was going to go with the chocolate, so I figured one box would be a smart first try. Ended up working out fine since it was still quite cool up there. Yay! Thanks for the comment. So glad the videos can be of help :)

    HI Entrepreneur Girl, Would you ever buy a product to sell on amazon fba if it was a good deal but had no ranking and no comments and no stars? Scott

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  9 років тому

      It would really depend on the item. Sometimes I can look other places to find ranking... like camelcamelcamel. Comments about products can be found generally with a Google search. I'm kind of a risk taker, so I would probably try an item if it was a super good deal, knowing I could sale it on ebay, etsy or craigslist, if I couldn't on Amazon.

    Does someone ever get a product you have sold FBA and the original price is on the package and it is very low and they paid much more - do they complain? For example, I found a sticker book - where a kid creates 4 books with stickers and it is new in package. It shows obviously that is costs $2.00. There is only one seller on Amazon and it is being sold new in package for 19.98. I assume I list at the same price. Will the customer react when they see the $2.00 on the store package?

    • @jessica4194
      @jessica4194 9 років тому +1

      +Muzette Casas I know this is past due, but I have seen customers give poor feedback ratings for seeing the clearance items ((stickered and forgotten to be taken off)) being sent to them when they had paid full price. I am sure it is insulting for them, as I would be a little annoyed if this happened to me
      .

    Do you remove the stickers from the packaging that show a much lower price than what the Amazon buyer will be paying or just leave the stickers on?

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

      I always take them off, or cover them if I can't get them off. It only upsets people when you leave them on... and we don't want that :)

    • @CavvyStudios
      @CavvyStudios 10 років тому

      EntrepreneurGirl That makes sense. Thanks for the prompt reply. If there are stickers showing a higher price than what your customer is paying, do you leave them on? After watching your video and some others, I made my first attempt at retail arbitrage by buying 140 Angry Birds iPhone cases for .50 cents each today. Some of them still have the sticker on them from Best Buy that say $11.99. Since I'm only charging $6 each for them I thought it would be a good idea to leave the stickers on, but I'm hoping to find out what peoples' experience has been with this before experimenting on my own.

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

      CavvyStudios On FBA, I take off all stickers since I believe they are supposed to be removed and it appears more professional.... and I really don't want to do ANYTHING to offend Amazon or an Amazon customer (it's so important to my livelihood). But on ebay, a higher ticket value might make them happy, and I would probably keep it on there. The clean appearance isn't as important on that forum; and ebay customers LOVE a good deal :)

      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

    • @RicardoFigueroa
      @RicardoFigueroa 10 років тому +1

      Sometimes the signal is bad in some stores and then I have to leave because of that.
      That is why I was looking for a good scanner. My plan is to go to the store and scan as fast as I can and get it done. I just don't know how the information from the scanner goes to the cellphone.

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

      oh, yes. I know what you mean there. In that case a PDA is your best bet. You will need to make sure the database is current (recently downloaded) before you scan. Here's an example of one: www.neatoscan.com/ProductCategory.aspx?productCategoryID=6

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  8 років тому

      Using a scanning app like Profit Bandit or the free amazon seller app, you can use the scanner (which uses the camera feature on your phone) ormanually enter in the title of a product and the app will provide information to you that helps you decide if it is a good purchase or not.

    How much time do you spend shopping each day? Is that time part of your 4 hours per day?

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

      Lisa Miller Not always. It's very time consuming to shop. So for example, this week I spent four hours at an auction on Monday, and then four hours the next day listing the items I purchased. Getting inventory is normally done wherever I happen to be (errands) or weekends fri-sun when I'm at garage sales and passing by stores. When you shop, make it count. When you list, list hard.

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  9 років тому +1

      Hi Scott! What I meant was the ranking number. If you are using the Amazon Seller App on your smartphone (or most other selling apps) it will give you a ranking number. This number indicates if an item will sell fast or slow (lower number is better). I like to stay under 100,000 as a general rule, but it really depends on the item and the category.

    Do you have multiple days where you say to yourself, this is too much daily stuff going on, and you don't want to go looking for these deals various different stores. It seems like you have so much happening daily it would burn you out at some point. Appreciate your thoughts, motivation etc...

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  8 років тому +1

      +Giggidygiggidy12 oh yes!!!! Some days I am in a "listing" mood (read that, pop in movies and sit and enter them in the computer while I watch) and some days I just want to garage sale and have fun (so my garage fills up like a hoarder). lol. There are even days, I go to the beach and say the heck with it. I realize now that my energy levels with this business (and I'm guessing all work related tasks) ebb and flow. I get tons done when I feel strong (think energizer bunny) and then when I feel blah I just take a much needed break and don't beat myself up for it because I know it all works out in the end. This past year, my dad was in hospice and passed away. I didn't make any of my year end big goals. Yet, that is ok, because I made my biggest goal = people first. always. I find that when I hug on myself and my company and know that tomorrow is always another day, and to walk away from it when it just isn't flowing, that burnout might edge close, but never consumes me. Hope this helps.

      Can I ask you something? I came across your reviews of Chris Greens Online Arbitrage. Did you feel it was worth the money and made a difference to your knowledge gained? It seems everyone likes to take courses, like there are loads. I have even taken two which have helped as I knew nothing about this world. The courses were priced very very fairly (under $50) and worth their weight in gold as they gave informative info on different aspects like bundling etc. I just wondered what you felt about some of the courses doing the rounds and if you felt they were at all necessary?

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  9 років тому

      +Life4Sale I learned without anything. You can too. Some people like the added support, and this does offer that. Actually, I would go as far as to say it is the best book on the market regarding this (currently). It's such an individualized decision. Personally, I am currently taking courses to learn Private Label even though I have self taught up to this point. Because it is a concept that I would like to move fast in and the knowledge will gain me more in a month than I paid.

    the reason you said 3x your money on items, is it because you're factoring Amazon fees? in actuality, you're really getting 2x the money? is that why?

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  8 років тому

      +Aaron QH Exactly. If an item sold for $30... 1/3 ($10) wold go to Amazon fees, 1/3 ($10) cost to purchase item, 1/3 ($10) into your bank.

    what happens if your product don't sell?

    • @EntrepreneurGirl
      @EntrepreneurGirl  10 років тому

      If my item doesn't sell with Amazon FBA, they will give me the option to pay extra fees to store in the warehouse, or to pay to have it sent back to me, or to have them destroy the product. So far, I've only had to have a dozen of one item sent back. I opted to pay to have sent back, because I could still sell on ebay for a profit even after shipping expenses.
      If my item doesn't sell on ebay, and I do not want to keep relisting it because it is no longer profitable, I simply stop the listing and put the item in my "reject box". This box is one I keep in my garage for items that I can't sell. For example, I recently went to a book sale and acquired over 1000 books for a rock bottom price; knowing full well, that some of those books will be penny romance novels that I can't sell for a profit. They will go into the reject box, I will then take the box to the local Kiwanis, and I will ask for a donation receipt. Sometimes they even give me a blank receipt (meaning I fill in the $$ amount). This receipt is very useful at tax time, because I can write off my "loss".... which in essence, means the reject items actually made me money in the end :)
