How to Install a SHURflo Fresh Water Pump - RV DIY

  • The SHURflo fresh water pump in our RV stopped working and needed replacement. This is an easy DIY job that just about anyone can do.
    The plugs I used are called 'crimp on quick disconnects' or similar. I struggled to remember the name while filming. The white plug is often called a squeeze connector.
    The pump model number is 4008-101-E65 and it's called the SHURflo Evolution Fresh Water Pump. The pump is rated at 3.0 Gallons per minute, and 55psi.

    You piqued my curiosity so now I have to go out and locate my water pump. Thanks for the tip about cleaning out the filter. We've been using trailers for a couple of decades now but our current trailer is the first one with a water pump.

    I bought my new pump months ago and am finally getting around to installing it, so, I figured I would see if anyone had posted this install on UA-cam and found this one. Definitely helpful, in particular, I will bring some rags with me to deal with whatever water might need mopping up. Thanks for taking the time to put this video up. Very helpful.

    Thanking you for the tip. I have a 2003 travel trailer with all sorts of issue on water pump and slide out electrical switches. Watching your video helps me to try to fix it myself due to cost. It seems like every time I take it to the RV shop it cost me way over.

    Thank you for the post... I was just about to order a new pump, but you mentioned that some pumps wont come on unless the water is going.. HAHAHA... well guess what, My system was pressurized from putting water in the tank, and I just flipped the lever from tank to city.. So when I turned on the pump nuttin happened.. You mentioned to turn on the water... I did... and there you have it.. stupid brain from winter and not camping that time.. Well, thanks for the post, you saved me some minor work and $70.00

    One other thing. The water pressure sensor diaphragm can be adjusted with an allen wrench. For example if the pump stops before adequate water pressure has been reached or if motor runs intermittently when a tap has not been turned on. (Keep in mind it will also run intermittently if you have a drippy tap or some other slow leak.)

    Like your video... my only comment would be to install a inline fuse as a back up fuse in front of the pump.. Then take the extra fuses 5 or ten and put them in a ziplock to keep them dry and staple to the inside of the bed frame.. Always keep a roll of wire in your bag and a couple plastic inline fuses. In a pinch you can always direct wire to the battery or install a pump on the fly with a different amp ratting...

    Yes there is - The RV has a one year warranty on everything plus we have an extended warranty. That said, if you live full-time in an RV there's a value equation of: will it cost more to bring the RV in for service or more to do the work yourself? You have to factor time to unhook, pack up, and drive to service, fuel to get there, possible hotel/motel for a night or two etc.. Plus that's time I could be working and earning. For an $80 repair it usually makes sense to take care of it myself.

    Used to sell allot of those SHURflos at the RV dealer even replaced a half dozen for clients that bought them. They bring in there rigs and while the others worked on the stuff i couldn't handle with my health. i took care of the easy things (easy in my eyes anyways) that wont take away there time on other things. there was only like 4 of us at the dealership so not allot of us (miss working there even know my boss was a pain lol). Pretty good pumps. But always nice yeah if you have a valid Warranty to RMA the bad one and hold onto it as a spare.

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  10 років тому

      Agreed. I tried to warranty the old pump, but was just out of warranty. SHURflo warrantees 2 years for purchased pumps, but only 1 year for original equipment.

    Was your fresh water tank empty or did you have an isolation valve? Otherwise why did it not leak when you disconnected the line from the tank to the pump?

  • @coreybabcock2023
    @coreybabcock2023 Рік тому

    Always open a tap before removing the connection to bleed off the pressure and relieve some water out of the lines

  • @Trekwithus
    @Trekwithus  10 років тому

    @John Doe - it won't let me respond directly to your question, but I don't think these pumps are designed to handle warm or hot liquids. When you're taking a shower (for example), the hot water from your water heater doesn't pass through the pump, but rather is pushed from the water heater into the shower by the pressure the pump creates in front of the water heater. The pump is very close to the fresh water tank and pumps water from the tank to everything else. I'm not saying hot water will hurt it - rather that it doesn't pump hot water normally or by design. Beyond that, I'd ask SHURflo. Good luck!

    I’ve seen multiple opinions on whether or not the 4008 needs an accumulator; the box says it doesn’t but would there be a benefit from having an accumulator? Could it cause damage to the pump?

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  5 років тому

      Hi Gavin - it doesn't need an accumulator, but an accumulator will make the pump run more evenly and quieter. If you use the water pump often I'd recommend it. It definitely won't damage the pump - the accumulator is made by ShurFlo and designed to be used with their pumps.

    I have a question. I've never winterized my unit before but I plan on doing it myself next winter. I noticed you have a filter connected to your water pump just like mines. So my question is I know I'm suppose to connect the tube an antifreeze on the side where that filter is so does that piece screw off or slide off? Or can I connect it to the opposite side of the filter??

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  5 років тому

      Our unit has a separate tube and valve near the pump on the same side as the water tank. Our tube has a screw off end - and you put that in the container of anitfreeze then pump it through the system by switching the valve. You'll pull from the antifreeze in place of the fresh water tank.

    Nice video. Will this work for houses? Our home has 3 floors and on the 3rd floor often times the water wont reach especially during busy hours.

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  5 років тому +1

      Theoretically you could make it work, but it's not designed to be used in a house as it runs on 12V power. SHURflo does make a product for houses with low water pressure. Search Google for 'SHURflo 115VAC Booster Pump ' and that should be what you need. A bit more expensive but the right pump for the job. Good luck!

    Question: I am taking my RV to deer camp, and i will not have a water supply there. I am thinking about bringing a 55 gallon plastic food grade barrel with me each time so that i can still shower, etc. Could i just connect a hose to the bottom of my barrel, leave the barrel in the truck and connect the other end of the hose to my existing RV water pump? Thus eliminating the need to refill & drain the holding tanks each trip?

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  9 років тому

      DFWsportsguru Yes you can. Your holding tanks are nothing more than a square shaped barrel anyway, so connecting it to an exterior barrel is functionally no different. Good luck!

    Curious question I hooked up the same pump that you’re using is the end of your line open or is it plugged. The reason I’m asking is mine appears to build up so much pressure that it stops pumping and nothing comes out the exit. So I had a drill a small hole in the very end and it appears to be slow but working

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  4 роки тому

      Hi Fred - mine is closed. The pump is connected to the water tank in the RV - so when activated it pumps water directly from the tank into the lines.

  • @92813justin

    Does the pump automatically turn off when it hits 55psi in the hose?

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  8 років тому

      +Justin White I'm not following your question. When you turn on a faucet, the pump starts pumping - it senses the vacuum. When all faucets are off, the pump stops pumping. If you had it connected directly to a water hose with a valve or sprayer (for example), it would only pump when the valve is open or the sprayer was being used. I think the 55psi refers to the water pressure the pump creates when in use.

    • @92813justin

    What do you do when the original pump for your rv is 40 years old and they dont make that model anymore?

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  3 роки тому

      Hi Gary - one of the newer model pumps will work fine. You don't have to match the pump - I considered upgrading to a better water pump in my RV before warrantying this one. 12V power connections all work the same - identify the positive and negative wires and either splice or use connectors to the new water pump model. Just make sure whatever pump you get both fits the space and has enough power/GPM flow for your RV. Water connections should be the same and if not they make adapters. Good luck!

    Any thoughts on priming the pump before turning it on? I'm sure that running the pump with out water in the tank is what ruined it in the first place.
    I will hook it up to shore water before I turn on the pump just to make sure.

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  6 років тому

      SHURflo pumps don't require priming and they can run dry without damaging them (for a little while anyway). Usually it's hard water deposits that build up over time and ruins stuff like our pump.

    nice video i was more so wondering how the waterpump worked when using your reserve water tank not the city connection. at the end of the video i saw the shower running off ur reserve supply so how is water from your tank being fed through the pump? if the pump is not in the tank??

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  7 років тому

      Hi Linuxx - the pump doesn't need to be submerged to work. It has an inlet side where it creates suction. The hose that connect to that side is connected to the bottom of the fresh water tank, so the pump pulls water from the bottom of the fresh tank and then pushes it into the water lines of the RV. Make sense?

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  6 років тому

      It could be a bad wire connection or a bad pressure switch. Sometimes the internals get clogged. Do you have it wired up to 12V directly or through a fuse? Check the fuse (obv). When my 2nd pump went bad (yep, on the 3rd one now) it ran like it was on, but didn't pump any water.

    • @Airkoay

      The pump is brand new out from the box. The first time I turned it on, but I didn't have any water in place yet. The second time I tried it (with water), it barely pump the water. The third time, I tried, it doesn't pumped at all. I installed through my switch panel that connects to my 12v battery. Though now that you mentioned clogged, I may want to recheck the entire hose. I noticed when I drilled my bumper, pieces of the plastics fell inside the tank. Thanks for the suggestions

      Thanks for the reply. I did some research and got it done. I agree that most people are doing a replacement rather than a new install. I appreciate your offer to help.

      Water system over view for RV

    I am more than willing to watch a longer video that actually shows you cutting and crimping wires, matching screw holes and huffing, puffing and cursing if you did any of that. This is not for a complete novice, this is for people who have already gone thru that awkward stage of stripping wires successfully, crimping with a tool, (which tool you do not show), seeing that you made a new connection with the black ground but not how you attached the new red power wire..so now I have to go hunt for a more novice friendly video. My first thumbs down rating ever..

      Hi Mary - I never said the video was for a complete novice. I'm assuming some basic knowledge of hand tools which isn't unreasonable for a DIY repair. If you don't feel comfortable stripping wires - and don't know what a wire stripper looks like or how to use one - then I would recommend against DIY projects like this. Bad electrical connections can cause a fire.

      @@Trekwithus thanks for the response. I can be handy with a few tools, stripping wires was just perfected by me from a handy UA-cam video I watched after yours skipped that part. So when they promised to show me stripping wires and showed me stripping wires I did not feel misled by a do it yourself tutorial video that assumes you kind of all ready know how to do the only tricky parts already. I was not allowed to take either shop or auto mechanics in high school. That has cost me a lot of money over my long life. You should give the girls a break and show what you take for granted your audience already knows. And I note from the comment section that others were also asking questions about what you skipped over..so just saying, it’s a fair critique.

      @@kleenmary7060 Hi Mary - I think your solution - finding a video that teaches you how to strip wires - is better than every video that includes wire stripping to spend time explaining how to strip wires. I've been more thorough in the past and get complaints that I'm spending too much time 'going over the basics', so it's difficult to make a video that works for everyone. I hope you were able to get your pump replaced successfully, and good luck in the future!

    How do you sanitize the pump before installing it, dude??

    • @Trekwithus
      @Trekwithus  8 років тому

      +Susie Deagle There's really no need. The pump is ready to go out of the box, and the internals are made out of drinking water safe stuff. If you want to be sure, then run several gallons of water through it (take a shower) to clean the insides before drinking the water if you'd like. That should clean the internals well.

      Susie One should NEVER ever drink water out of any RV system !!!! Even if you have sanitized the system and filled with fresh clean water bacteria will grow in the tank in just a few days !!!! We learned that the hard way on our first RV !!!! Nothing like a good intestinal termoil while up in the mountains camping !!!! Drink only bottled water or water you have boiled, like in coffee A trip to the emergency room at 5 oclock in the mornin with your camper and 2 horses !!! Been there done that learned our lesson !!!
