Having "State" in the name just indicates that the school is a public university that has oversight from the state that they're in. Many universities without State in the name are also public universities, though.

Yeah the full name of Penn State is “The Pennsylvania State University”, which basically means it’s a state university, or in other words a state-funded university.

Yes. Appalachian State is in Boone North Carolina in the Appalachian Mountains.
App State is a smaller school than Texas A&M. Texas A&M is a huge school.

When a college or university has “State” in the name it indicates that it is a public or state institution. If it doesn’t have that, it MAY be a private college such as Notre Dame.

If you fumble and it goes out of bounds it's still your ball but if you fumble into the endzone and it goes out of bounds its the other teams ball.

fun fact: the Appalachian mountains, the Scottish Highlands, Scandinavian Mountains in Norway, and the Little Atlas Mountains in Morocco were all the same mountain range 1.2 billion years ago, before the continents split apart.

“State” just means it’s state (public) funded. Private schools and public schools is a big debate lol. Publicly funded uni’s very often have State (but not all) BUT if a school has State it’s always publicly funded

Jacksonville Florida is not the only city or town called Jacksonville. In the US, there are several towns or cities with the same name, such as Portland Oregon and Portland Maine. Also the same with colleges. There is the university of Miami, and there is Miami of Ohio.

Cam Rising has been a fairly solid QB for the U of U for the past few years. He's definitely got a good passing and running game. We've definitely been considered a bit of an odd ball/black sheep of the PAC12 with schools like USC, UCLA, Washington State, Washington, and Oregon in there. We've had some really good players that have taken us pretty far, but we've never been able to win the Rose Bowl sadly. But we're definitely one of those schools that doesn't stand out a lot, but ends up rocking a lot of worlds. I'm still going to suggest you look at Britain Covey's highlights when he was playing for the U of U. He's now playing for the Eagles, but he basically took the ball and left you in the dust. He's really fun to watch, it's just that Philly isn't giving him the chance he needs to shine.

Jacksonville State is in Alabama believe it or not. It was in a lower division of college football at the time, so this loss was embarrassing.

That Jacksonville State is located in Alabama. It has “state” in the name because it’s a public university overseen by the state it is located.

6:41 to make things more confusing jacksonville state university isnt in florida; it’s in jacksonville, alabama 😂
90% of the time a school has “state” in the title like boise state, east tennessee state, or murray state have that in the title because at one point in their history they were calle “x” state teachers college and they just kept the state and dropped everything else. Most did that in the 40’s and 50’s. My alma mater the university of north alabama used to be called florence state university for the same reasons. Same thing for memphis, people are still pissed they changed their name lol. School like oklahoma state and iowa state changed their name used to be “x” a&m but changed it in the 50’s. Colleges in california with state in their name are different because they are apart of the california state university system (different from the university of california system lol).

Jacksonville State is called "Stated because they get funding from the state government. Although the Jacksonville they're named for is Jacksonville, Alabama, they couldn't be Alabama State because that name was taken.

Jacksonville State is in Alabama. The State part just denotes a state school. There are several others like this: Kent State, Boise State, San Diego State, San Jose State, Ball State, Fresno State.
I don't understand how half of these are the product of being a meme. The criteria doesn't make sense.

  • @joels5150

The (city name) State terminology is confusing because they aren’t using the full proper university name. Most states have their public university system, like California for example. The official name for a school like San Jose State is actually California State University at San Jose. Boise State would be Idaho State University at Boise. The shorthand can make it confusing as to the actual location and affiliation of a particular school. It’s largely done for promotion of college athletics, as even official college merchandise uses the shorthand, but official documentation like transcripts and diplomas will feature the proper naming convention.

Well you get states like Cali and Texas and a few in the east who seem to have way too many schools playing (in my own opinion). So like Texas State, Texas Tech, Texas North, Texas South, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, Houston, Houston Christian and so forth that all are Texan schools and all pretty much bear the Texas or "of the state of Texas" official moniker and all of them play in similar leagues. So it gets kind of bad when you can't do simple separation between "school with the name of the state" and "name of the state State school" and it gets worse as you have to sub-divide it even further.
I'm saying this from a "lesser" state (Utah) where we have the University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Valley University, Brigham Young University, Weber State University, and Utah Tech University as our big name schools. All but 2 of them bearing the name of the state in one way or another, but we don't have like 20 schools that are excessive. I'm just waiting for it to get to the point of some school to be like, "We're the California State Christian Medical Technical Business Mid-North-by-North-West-Southern Online University!" CSCMTBMNNWSOU just rolls of the tongue.
