Yep, it was the moment that quintessentially defined the character of Malcolm Reynolds. Kind of like Indiana Jones shooting the guy in the Bazaar scene of Raiders.

That's when I knew he was more badass than Batman; he won't sit there and agonize about not killing someone. He'll simply get the job done and is fiercely loyal to his crew (family).

Ken MacMillan Another neat scene was when this guy was holding some of Mal's crew at gun point and Mal walked in and shot the guy without breaking stride. I forgot the episode but it was such a quick and clean kill, I had to backup the scene and see it again. That jet engine scene deserved a couple of mentions as I remember.

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
    I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me.
Leave the men where they lay
    They'll never see another day
Lost my soul, lost my dream
You can't take the sky from me.
I feel the black reaching out
I hear its song without a doubt
I still hear and I still see
That you can't take the sky from me.
Lost my love, lost my land
Lost the last place I could stand
There's no place I can be
    Since I've found Serenity
And you can't take the sky from me.

History isn't a cartoon with a black & white morality tale. History is complex, bloody, and morally conflicting at the best of times. Dismissing historical personalities for their faults without acknowledging their virtues that helped make your comfortable, democratic life a possibility is being short sighted and arrogant.

My wife and I loved this show when it was on TV. So much so were heavily involved with the fan scene after it was cancelled. We met pretty much all the major cast and a lot of the production crew. I look at the 14 episodes of this show as some of the best writing of a TV show EVER. Period. It's like the Shakespeare of our time in terms of dialogue.
Of course I also love the irony of the show that Joss Whedon created a show like this, not realizing at the time that he was making a serious critique of modern day liberalism. Perhaps someday he will. :D

It boggles the mind that this show wasn't successful to where it could have enjoyed multiple seasons - when it's weighed against all the other sci-fi (and throw in the comic book super hero genre) content that has been made, it shines like a jewel found in a coal seam

Joss continued Buffy and Angel in comic form for seasons 8 and 9 about 10 years ago. And honestly those comics killed whatever love I had for the show. Season 8 was Buffy messed up all magic because of season 7 and whines about not being normal and having to be a leader; Season 9 is Buffy gets her wish and starts whining about not being a Slayer anymore.

It's a reason I like to give for why Fox selling their entertainment division to Disney was a good thing. Fox has never been particularly bright about their properties. They made a few good choices when they started the network (Married With Children and The Simpsons, for example), but overall just few smart decisions. I mean hell, they let George Lucas keep the merchandising rights to Star Wars without a fight! eesh...

I love Firefly dearly, but I think only the most die-hard fans still have any serious hope for a revivial of it. The moment when it might have been possible with the original crew is long past: Ron Glass is dead and Summer Glau has grown up. Any revival with a new, or partially new cast would run the risk of failing to capture the chemistry that was such an integral part of it.

They gave us a solid movie. You wave a little flag in front of the browncoats and they will rise to the occasion.
Their faith has not been misplaced yet. And I think that many of them, myself included, know in their head that it wouldn't work, but deep down there is a little voice saying "fuck you man! This is FIREFLY! Of course it will be great!"

Good review. One of the aspects I really enjoyed about the movie are the numerous allusions to FORBIDDEN PLANET, which many reviewers have called "Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' set in space." We have a planet named Miranda (Prospero's daughter, the "forbidden planet"), the Reavers are the new id monster-literally, and the crashed rescue ship and its shuttle both bear the registration number C-57D (the number of the space cruiser in FORBIDDEN PLANET).

The concept was a staggeringly BRILLIANT one... The original Star Trek series was once described as "Cowboys & Indians in space" and I can't help but think Joss took that description and dialed it up to eleven! ...(falling to knees and weeping pitifully)

  • @praxisvoiceworks
    @praxisvoiceworks 6 років тому +17

Absolutely dead on Dave! This show is one of my favorite TV series of all time, with the somewhat lesser known and longer running, quirky Farscape coming in a close second to this. It somehow continues to be a relevant commentary on our society and illustrates how corrupt governments can oppress it's people yet there remain those who will not bend under it's weight and fight for freedom.
If I may I'd like to ask you to consider reviewing what I believe is the most important as well as greatest television series ever produced....1967's The Prisoner.

    • @praxisvoiceworks
      @praxisvoiceworks 6 років тому +3

kevlarandchrome Why thank you sir. Sounds like your tastes simply echo my own! ;)
But the importance of The Prisoner cannot be overstated, especially since it's creator, the late, great Patrick McGoohan as well as 1984's George Orwell both posed these frightening, dystopian depictions as warnings of potential futures that if we continue down the path globalist progressives have placed us on our society is bound to resemble or mirror.
I have watched each of theses excellent series yearly and am bringing my daughters up to understand the tenants of liberty and the ramifications of government overreach as well as the evils of socialism/communism and how these things can and will lead to our complete enslavement to the state illustrated in these excellent shows

I recorded every televised episode on VHS when it was on TV. It was difficult since the show was preempted several times and shown after the late night news. When the DVD collection came out I purchased it immediately. Characters and storytelling are the key to this show. When one has watched the 2 part premier episode one knows every character. They may have secrets but they are fully fleshed out characters that you want to learn more about. Jayne (Adam Baldwin) is also my favorite character, "And if wishes were horses then we'd all be eating steak for dinner", still cracks me up.

It is an absolute marvel from a business standpoint that Fox hasn't decided to devote 100% of it's resources to bring this back on tv. They'd bring in so much money that they'd never want it to end. Just look at how many people still show up at the fan cons and how much official Firefly merch is for sale. Absolutely insane.

Review was spot on! Firefly is an awesome show. To one of your points, the fact that it did not run on too long, watch Babylon 5. Not as good, but the show was designed to run for 5 seasons, tied up pretty much all of its plot lines, and ended on a decent note instead of either fading away or jumping the shark.

With Whedon's tendency towards "progressive ideas" I wonder if he could once again write a show where the main character is essentially a former soldier in the confederacy? Back in the day I was lucky enough to get tickets to the pre-screening of the movie and saw the work print version they were showing off to the fan base around the country to drum up grassroots hype. I was able to meet and sit with Ron Glass during the screening. A cool and unique experience.

There is a lot of similarities between the Browncoats and the Confederate soldier, especially if you look at Reconstruction era America. Many former Confederate soldiers went west after the war because they had nothing left at home and didn't want to live under the military occupation of the US government; exactly what Mal and Zoe did after the war. Jessie James, a former Confederate solder, is a lot like Mal and Jayne being an outlaw and a folk hero. There are also many ballads about the Confederate soldier in the 150 years since the war ended that fit the Browncoats to a tee and I know at least one was made into a Firefly fan video.

    • @hillfolkes
      @hillfolkes 6 років тому

I also got the chance to see a prescreening. Drove with my friends 5 hours on one days notice... I'll never forget the introduction to the movie by Whedon, where he said if you like the movie, now is the time to spread the word, and if you don't like it, now's the time to shut up.
That was the moment I lost all respect for him. And there WERE substantial flaws in Serenity, which my friends and I commented on the tiny 3x5 card questionnaire/survey that was given to the viewers. But nothing was changed, the movie stayed exactly as it was. It was simply "River the Reaver Slayer" - not Firefly.
And of course, all the Wheadonesque fat fangirls fawned all over the place, and argued that it was perfect, Joss could do no wrong. Sad, really. The movie had such potential.
Firefly is still one of my favorite TV shows of all time. But I have come to discover that most of what I liked about it had more to do with the other writers and production team than with Whedon.

    • @TheSulross

Firefly (and because it is essentially a Western set in outer space) immediately made me think of the Clint Eastwood Western films where he's a former Confederate soldier, where circumstances position him as an outlaw, and he's always drifting or staying out of the reach of pursuit. The comparisons to be drawn are obvious and numerous.

One of the best quotes in movie history came from Serenity: "'Cause as sure as I know anything I know this: They will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground, swept clean. A year from now, ten, they'll swing back to the belief that they can make people... better. And I do not hold to that. So no more running. I aim to misbehave." -Captain Malcolm Reynolds
One could say that the alliance was a prelude to the SJW's and Mal was the original Kekistani.

I don't want this show to continue. Correction, I don't want this show to continue NOW. I certainly did, and I still would, if I had a shred of hope that it would be even slightly similar to what we have now. Firefly is, like you said, sacred to me. It's the untouchable sci-fi, the peak of original sci-fi TV, one of the smallest and yet most interesting and engaging fantasy worlds I've ever seen. Some bright son of a bitch just thought one day, "What would happen if I cross sci-fi and western?" and this masterpiece was born. I want to treasure it as it is, always and forever. I do not want to see it become yet another rebooted series crushed under the pressure of fans and under the heel of liberal Hollywood.

I also think that Whedon may realize that the Libertarian message inherent to Firefly wouldn't sit well with his current crop of fans. Many of the original "Flans" (as I encountered them in the fandom) were already obnoxious Lefties, completely oblivious to the fact that their "Big Damn Heroes" didn't march to the beat of the drums in their heads. They resented it enormously when that was pointed out to them. =^[.]^=

As much as I'd love to see more Firefly, I cant help but feel too much time has passed and fan expectations would be far too high. The only way I could see it working is if they did like a mini-series adaptation of the sequel comics (Leaves on the Wind/No Power in the Verse), and used them as a backdoor pilot for a spinoff set in the same universe following mostly new characters.

    15 years?! God, I'm old.
I would've loved it if it at least ran for two full US seasons. That's enough to give us plenty and let the writers REALLY hit their stride (very few of these kinds of series don't get at least a little better after the writing staff has shaken out and gotten comfortable with the characters) without letting the long-running rot seep in.
And it would seep in: Joss is infamous for making interesting stuff, and then pissing all over it later on.
