  • Punk dulcimer. Cover of the Ramones classic, "I Wanna Be Sedated," played on electric dulcimer by Sam Edelston.
    Dulcimers are natural rock instruments. In fact, I even say that dulcimers are among the world's coolest musical instruments, and they deserve to be known by the general public - the way that everybody knows guitars and ukuleles. Though usually associated with old folk songs and tunes, dulcimers are great for a shocking variety of modern music, too. I do these videos to inspire more people to play and listen to dulcimer music, in diverse, non-traditional styles.
    My initial post of this song had audio in only one channel. This version has sound in both channels, and I've also boosted the volume a little.
    If you like what you hear (through both ears now), please "Like" it, Share it, and check out more of my videos.

    Song written by Dee Dee Ramone, Joey Ramone, and Johnny Ramone.
    Technical details: Black Wolf electric chromatic 3-string dulcimer built by Rod Matheson, tuned DAD, capoed up a full step and played in E, which is the key of the original recording, and modulating to F#. (The song could be played in D without any special frets, but then you couldn't do the cool modulation.) Two channels of output, Channel A has an octave pedal, overdrive, and chorus, plus a Cry Baby toward the end. Channel B has a separate octave pedal, Mellotron emulator, auto-wah, phase shifter, and compressor/sustainer.

    This is very cool I've never heard one of my favorite Ramones songs played on a dulcimer before. Love it, you have a great skill with that musical instrument.

      Thanks! Dulcimers surface in the rock or pop world once in a while -- through players like Brian Jones (Lady Jane), Joni Mitchell, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Hornsby, and even Jimmy Page. Personally, though, I think they're so well suited to rock that they should be commonplace and mainstream. I believe it's just a matter of time.

      @BeesWaxMinder - I'm glad you asked that question. I recorded this song with two tracks, but then when I released it last November, it immediately went viral and apparently caught mono. This version fixed that problem. 😀

    • @ContemporaryDulcimer
      @ContemporaryDulcimer  4 роки тому +1

      @elipandaman Thanks! The most important thing for a new player to know about dulcimers is that, even though most people play folk tunes on them, they can play almost any kind of music.
      Learn all of the chords on your instrument. Find music that _you_ love, and try it. You'll be surprised at some of the things that will start to come out of it.

    I was wondering: when playing a chromatic dulcimer, are you still able to use the drone strings as drone strings? Assuming you play modally of course.

    • @ContemporaryDulcimer
      @ContemporaryDulcimer  4 роки тому +4

      Great question. Liam. The short answer is, yes, you absolutely can play melody-and-drones. And you can even capo it into any key, so you can play in "D" while everyone else is playing in real E, as in the example of this song.
      In general, you can do almost anything on a chromatic that you can on a diatonic -- though certain long reaches become impossible (because of a half-step fret getting in the way), and certain things (like harmony in parallel thirds or sixths) will require more thought.

      ContemporaryDulcimer great! Thank you for your help.

    • @ContemporaryDulcimer
      @ContemporaryDulcimer  4 роки тому +1

      Another option is a semi-chromatic dulcimer. I like dulcimers that have the following combination of "extra" frets: 0+. 1+, 6"+, 8+, 13+. (I don't get a 7+.) It gives me more keys and more chords, but yet is simple enough to play without thinking.
