I have to say, this podcast has gone through many iterations and I can really tell you guys are getting closer and closer to an incredible product! loving the recent format and discussions!
I appreciate conversations about maintaining motivation. I've had a handful of Marvel United minis sitting on my painting desk lol. I need to finish them!
Me and my partner went to reapercon for the first time this year. The factory tour is an event anyone can sign up for and they do a few tours a day. They do fill up, so get in early.
You messed the Blood Angels lore up in the Preamble Ramble. The Blood Angels have basicly 2 flaws. The first one is the Red Thirst. It compells Blood Angels to drink blood. They are basicly Vampires. The second curse is the Black Rage. With that they relive the last hours of their Primarch Sanguinius, when he whent up with the Emperor to Horus´s Flagship untill he died. Those Blood Angels will see everything as Chaos Marines and Horus himself and blindly rage and charge. Then you mixed up 2 different charackter models. The one you where talking about, the Executioner of the Death Company is Astorath. The one with the Dracula Armor, black wings and the Axe. Lemartes on the other hand is a Chaplain of the Blood Angels, who himself is constandly in the state of the black rage but has lucid phases in between and he guids the members of the Death company in battle.
Fdm is weird to paint and sometimes drybrushing makes it look like trash cause of the grain. However if you drybrush with the layer lines instead of across them, you can still use alot of these classic tools. However stippling is king at hiding bad FDM surface.
I had no idea everyone else was having the same issues I had with the Kimera paints. I thought I just wasn't using them enough or had to "get good" and learn to use them "right"
There is a line in the Kimera user manual that says "you can learn to use the various textures of our paints!" (or simliar). Clearly, the point of this line is to make you think their problems are your fault.
Scott, the humus sounds like the Baba's hummus. They have a location in Uptown. Peachy's donut is like a really solid donut, but so so so not worth the wait. Dairy building is always a banger, but Nitro ice cream in the food building is also good. Deep fried ranch was SO good. Came with a hot honey dipping sauce and it was maybe my favorite thing this year.
All the Kimeras have been out of stock forever, but I found everything on ebay and scratched my fomo paint itch. My paints all showed up in great shape, they all need a good ol' shakin'. When you thought you've shaken them enough, shake them more! Some of those pigments are ridiculously potent from the Kimera Kolors range.
If you want to smooth a print. Just use uv resin. Paint it on hit it with uv flashlight. If you need to gap fill add baby powder to the resin and it can fill in gaps.
Yes, this. Clear uv resin for art seems to self level really well for me. Do it in sections and lock 'em in with the flashlight! One coat and you're done with print finishing.
The podcast said "not perfect", but to encourage TUP a bit, you can get pretty close to perfect with minimal prep work these days! Terrain printed with a 0.25mm nozzle and a 0.10mm layer height + UV resin gap filling is pretty close to perfect. 0.07-0.05mm layer height for smaller terrain or where you can tolerate the long print times. Printing terrain like this is a good way to keep an FDM machine occupied if it's not doing anything else! Lord knows I've had periods where printer has sat used for months.
Hey guys, I’ve been binging and loving your podcast! Helping me grow as a mini painter is as well as others, is doing the mini painting god’s work. Quick FYI cos I’m that guy, Lemartes isn’t the one who slays the death company if they live through battle, it’s high Chaplain Astorath The Grim, Redeemer of The lost. Lemartes is also a chaplain but he lives half consumed by the thirst and rage, with enough consciousness to be able to be a chaplain and lead the true, fully fallen brothren ❤
2 40k Space Marine Book Recommendations! 1) Brothers of the Snake, its a Ultramarine successor chapter whose homeworld is called Ithaca 2) Devastation of Baal, the classic Blood Angels v Tyranids novel, details a lot of the thirst and a bit of the rage and hiw different chapters of the blood approach the curses.
Please check to be sure making them buy the mini from the store is legal in your area. I would suggest first start off doing How to Paint sessions, then after 6 months to a contest. Contact mini makers for minis for the How to Paint, sessions. Talk to Army Painter, Reaper and so on for paint, brushes and so on. Beginners will break some of these. I always had minis primed and ready to paint for these. NashCon and ReaperCon are great. Used to help run NashCon, when I was young and in TN. Avoid the LVO and such costing what 1000USD these days?
They do tons of tours at rcon, but you should totally reach out about a tour whenever, I'm sure they'd be happy to do one! They will do one off tours for random visiting plebs, I'm sure they'd be thrilled to do one for miniature painting royalty.
My first box of paints from kimera was also messed up but my problem was it had tiny little cured chunks in it. I posted on some painting group and Farabi pm'd me personally, asked me to send videos and in the end sent me a new box too free of charge (this was like 3-4 years ago though). Their explanation was that it'd probably been heat damaged in transport due to it having been a very hot summer in Italy that year.
Duuude, I actually went three times this year and the first thing I ate was the Paella! Biggest surprise for me was how good those London Broil sandos are.
Gencon tips with Uncle Ched: Go to the TCG hall and play in the Morning Pastimes free MTG events if you can get in to them. These are at 9 am normally and take about an hour to an hour and a half. If you do this you will avoid the mass of bodies going into the vendor hall. You could also just go hang out with Lyn and crew up in the MHE area at the northeast upstairs area. Once the initial smoke clears you are fine if you go in about 30 minutes after doors open. I also got the hot tips for the best spots to grab foods and what times. Trust me I am a local.
I get literally obsessed with painting to the point that it causes me to neglect other parts of my life. I can't explain it any other way but I desire to mentally escape and not return until I complete a paint job. I'm not even particularly dedicated to being a great painter. I only do it so my board games look better on the table lol.
Loved hearing about starting local painting comps! Not a lot of local stores in my area. None in my town actually. There is a tcg shop that dabbled in d&d minis but it is a small shop, one employee/owner ran. He has shown no interest in running other than MTG. Are there other avenues to look at to hold a competition?
Astorath is the one who kills the death company thats why he has his axe, not Lemartes, he keeps the units together during their last fight as the death compnay - come on Scott sort your law :P
A few of my kimera paints also are bad, pigment on bottom and can't mix it up with a vortex mixer....but I love a lot of their paints. Seems I wasn't the only one.
So about World Model Expo. It doesnt move around. It is at the same Convention Hotel in Eindhoven NL every other year. But the confusing thing about it is that somehow switches up with the Scale Model Challenge. Which is basically the absolute same event with a different awarding system to an other time in the year. The Vendors The Show the Organizers theyre all the same. Ive been there the last two years and going next Month to this years SMC. It is one of the best Hobby events in my Opinion.
😂My first time painting NMM i painted a winged knight from the dark souls board game 😅 it sucked , my next attempt was 2000pts of Nighthaunt 😂 finally starting to understand it recently taking my time on Moonstone minis
Space marines by their lore means they have to reach a bar of awesome to be a space marine.. so that's why they are all awesome. From what I remember its usually some planet that provides each chapter their marines and those planets are super harsh and they only take the best of the best..so like if earth was the feeder for some Space Marine chapter, they'd show up and grab the toughest most bad ass like top 5 people on earth and head off for another couple decades. So there shouldn't really be Michael Scotts of Space Marines.. Though I guess there could be times when a chapter gets decimated and they recruit who they have to recruit.. I guess that could happen.
Good one, though adding ‘ADHD’ would have improved it in my opinion. Also, ‘decisions’ could just as well have been ‘self presentation’, or quite a few other things for that matter.
I think you guys are over-thinking the fdm terrain. By definition its meant to be viewed at table-top distances, at which you will not notice the layers. By all means use techniques that don't emphasize the lines, but scrutinizing the terrain at display mini distances is folly.
If you guys are ever in the Seattle area, I would love to hook you up with some treats from my family’s business, Legendary Doughnuts! I would send some to you but the overnight shipping cost is insane.
My local small Pokémon and other deck building shop got big they outgrew their first shop now its 40 + people or more during tournaments and they've been promoting magic , i dont deck build but i buy my friend collects pokemon cards and memorabilia, ive printed a few pokemon in fdm and painted 1 for him , the shop had Warhammer when they first opened but now the only thing I buy from there is gundam
Scott, not sure if you're referring to my comment about the thumbnail/title or someone else's similar comment, but I'm quite shocked to hear that using "Blizzard" and "Warcraft" actually doesn't work. I wonder if those words would have worked if they were used in the original title when the algorithm is working the most in your favor.
Scott, uh, acchhhhhhhhhtually *flem*, the Death Company succumb to THE BLACK RAGE, not the Red Thirst. The Red Thirst is a genetic flaw passed down from their Primarch, and this endows them with the need to drink blood. The Black Rage is a curse inflicted upon the former legion after Sanguinius's death. As the Rage infects them, they constantly relive the death of their Primarch, and it drives them into insanity. Guys, I got the blood angel lore wrong, I'm sorry. Please don't revoke my geek license.
- Scott
Eh, all you did was jumble the 2 characters that come in that box. Easy to do. Thanks for all the laughs!
I was listening and just thinking that 😂
It's okay, you were excited about them, and that's what counts ❤
Scott and Jon getting space marine lore wrong is peak TUP, don’t worry
I don't think anyone expects you to know about blood angels lore. You only painted them for a short while. 🤭
Bro, you getting lore half right is like my favorite thing about this podcast
Blows my mind the WoW video isn't performing- I certainly was excited to watch it
Same
They also have free stls for minies for their newest mobile game- ton of mini painting opportunities
I think that was one of my favorite miniac videos I've seen
I think most wow players only care for Videos that tell them what to do week 1 mix max crap.
Same here it was a wicked video
Great to see Tired World Studio getting love. An absolute legend!
I friggin LOVE his work, man. I've been printing so many buildings!

Jon: need to cut down my paint range
also Jon: i just backed the full P3 range! lol

That's a power hoodie Jon, nice
The FDM vapor technique I believe will only work with ABS plastic. I don’t think it will affect PLA. Let us know if you give it a go!
I had no idea everyone else was having the same issues I had with the Kimera paints. I thought I just wasn't using them enough or had to "get good" and learn to use them "right"

Missing out on mentioning Odysseus was from Ithaca seems like a huge oversight when talking to fantasy nerds...

"your paint shouldn't be doing that"
If only we all had UA-cam channels that made companies care about production problems.
I think it's telling how good a job Jon's prime/sand job did when Scott had to hold it 6" from his face to make the lines out.

Listening to this AFTER the most recent episode where you shared your experience in Greece and your excitement is heartbreaking lol...
Love the question about organizing a painting competition! Makes me want to try this!
Escalation league helped me refocus and push through an army painting. Like they said, calling a mini or squad “good enough” has also been essential.

Brush on UV resin over your fdm print then cure it and it will help with the layer lines
I use heavy body white from the tube thinned down with matte medium and white ink.

@ninjon those starburst waters are deliciously addictive.
