In October 1967, I stood next to the center of Winterland’s stage in San Fransisco for Big Brother and the Holding Company. Janis and the Holding Co. were right in front of me. I shall never forget how beautiful that concert was. Janis’ voice was more folk rock than blues that night, my favorite Janis. I vividly recall her yelling out to James Gurley, after a long guitar solo, “James Gurley, you got the sexiest amplifier I ever heard!” He just finished making spacey electronic sounds with it. I remember the sweat pouring off Janis during ‘ball and chain'. I remember her shaking maracas in either ‘ah sweet Mary’ or ‘cuckoo’. Above all I shall never forget that soaring feeling in my heart during ‘piece of my heart'. At the end of the show, she looked as happy as sunlight. The whole band was in elevated spirits that night. It was long ago. Quicksilver Messenger Service opened the show and the Grateful Dead played before Big Brother. When I went I had a feeling some great music was about to be heard. I didn’t smoke, snort anything or dip into the bags of LSD-25 I remember seeing the audeince pass around.I knew I wanted to remember that magical night the rest of my life and so I did. I am 72 years old.
I've never seen a video on YT that didn't have a single dislike. I can see why this has none. I can't stop listening to this. Janis was focused on developing and refining her singing voice- before the days of wearing hear unbridled passion on her sleeve, and the negative effects of the booze, drugs, and the quilt they produced. She was such a beautiful, sweet, and fragile soul. I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to enjoy this...This is how I want to remember her...
Before Big Brother had a record contract, a friend who lived in San Francisco saw Janis ordering coffee at some cafe. He told the guy with him to pay attention, Janis was going to be famous. And so it turned out.
Such a difference in young Janis's voice... Here she wasn't strangling every song to death... She was really learning how to save her voice when she died... there were no nodes on her vocal cords when she died which is amazing considering how she "abused" her voice later in life. I used to walk past her apt on Lyon St every day on my way to work... I'd always say a little prayer to JAnis
The truth is don't think she wouldn't of made it so big if she held her voice back. Also, her working her voice so hard was the way she was reaching out to the crowd.
I like the way you speak about Janis.... She really had a knowledge and an intuitiveness about her talent; in your right later on in life she was learning how to used, utilize, preserve and get the most out of her voice. I've never been to San Francisco but I can only imagine the joy you felt walking by our old place on Lyon Street
The Hoyt Axton song is something I have never heard before - shows her softer singing style from early on - probably what her mother was thinking of when she complained about the "screaming" and said that Janis had such a pretty voice. Very nice early version of "Turtle Blues" (always one of my favorites) she and her voice had a great affect on me from the first time my older sister brought home the Mainstream album. I just love her and can't imagine how I could have grown up the way I did without that wonderful woman.
As sad as it was , her singing on "so sad to be alone " , is about as sweet as you ll ever heard her ! so sad that she was never around long enough to sound likr that again! THAT , For me, was the most sweetest female voice i ever heard. ! 219 train was pretty close on this take. shows her more sensitive side as well as her strong vocal technique ! proving that she was more than more than just volume !
I'm pretty sure it's after she'd heard the Quicksilver version or a folkie before that. One of the 1st 'drug' songs that may have been around since 1928±
Thank you for posting this, and is it possible for you to send this Janis demos to my phone? I really want this collection. Please, let me know. Sunshine 😊
Sunshine, I think you can use the download function to do that or, someone told me there was a program you could google that would allow you to do ytube downloads. Hope that was helpful.
@@NonDirectionalFilms Do you have a song list for this amazing compilation? That last song sounded like something by "Joy of Cooking"? Any information is appreciated.
Perfect human? Uh...OK Boomer, sure, sure she was. (And you are the same people who crap golden eggs when I say Garcia is God!) Jerry is God. LSD saves. Not Fade Away. Janice had a host of personal problems that she regularly medicated herself for. Let's drop the hyperbolé I like my hero's when their real, with all their human foibles included. A "perfect human" is a saint. But hey, "Saint Janis" has a nice ring to it. Peace
Какой великолепный голос. Дженис всегда меня успокаивает своим
пением. Какая она милая девочка❤❤❤
I LOVE YOU JANIS !
Janis: um tesouro para as futuras gerações. 💖✌🌹
A música que mais me emociona! Obrigado, Janis!!! Natal RN Nordeste Brasil!

Forgive me I was composing my message and autocorrect doesn't always pick up on what I'm saying either that or I'm not clearly enunciated

This is #*$&@! Amazing, wow, just wow....
Thank God for JJ and the 60s, we could have never gotten to that musical level.
Dear JJ, you have left very large shoes for us to fill. In ten years your life is still changing lives some 50 years later.

When she sings blues you can really hear Bessie Smith leaking out.
Just demos but The emotional and dynamic range of this stuff is beautiful. Even the poppier stuff.....she was the real real real friggin deal.
Janis was always stellar. A perfect human.

What a time to be alive. I wasn't alive then. I'm just sayin', what a time to be alive ! ! !
IMO, all art has been downhill since the 1960's.
yeah because yr frigide about it
the 3rd song is 'turtle blues' thats on the CT album. I believe j simon got co credit on rewrite.
Thank you. Janis I've never heard. Died way too soon.
God rest you in peace child.

They shouldn't have added the full band. I think her voice and a bit of guitar would been perfect.
The production of the first few songs sounded a lot better than whoever ended up 'professionally' recording her music.
I never knew this existed! A different side of Janis. Enjoyed this alot.
I really like the band backing her up. This should have been released - it’s really good!
We need some Lennon and McCartney mixed in with her, would be perfect.
Name of Song : ? Min: 6:30 m
She really sounds similar to Janis, but actually I don't think she's her. 🙄
I am sure it is Janis, the one and only
Сомнения нет. Это Дженис конечно@@g-music-redhead7390
I HATE that part at 22:23!!!
It was sad to see Big Brother walk off the stage after the greatest rock concert I’ll ever witness. That was in 1967.
When the music it's over...
