Cheapest Reed Valve Install and First Ride - Mk3 Motorised Bike
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 гру 2021
- I bought the cheapest reed valve kit on eBay for the 66cc 2 stroke on my Mk3 Motorised Bike. Today I bolted it straight onto the engine just to see what would happen. Now, I know what everyone says, you HAVE to have a windowed piston and an expansion chamber exhaust for a reed valve to "work properly", but I want to experience this for myself. In my opinion, if the reed valve doesn't make SOME improvement by itself, there's no point in changing anything else. Plus, this is my bike so I'll do whatever I want to it!
It ran surprisingly well for a bolt on part, but before I go ahead and start putting holes in my piston, I want to tune the carburettor properly first and sort out the air leaks which have started to rear their ugly heads.
The bike ran really well for the first time with a reed valve, but I've got one video coming up which is a night ride, which although you will not be able to see much, you'll be able to hear the bogging and the terrible running due to the vibrations causing the carb to slip off the intake and also the choke vibrating up and constantly causing the bike to stall.
In the near future I plan to address these issues and get the bike running properly before I go ahead with any more modifications.
Does anyone actually read these? Let me know in the comments if you did!

well hell yeah. i was gonna jump the gun. based on what you first said
Crazy how Reeds give less power on these China dolls and windowed pistons aren't making much difference. This bikes sounds lean with a reed, Very cool to show your experience 😎.😮
Flip over the reed valve and have the carb come out the other side of the bike, so you can adjust the idle.
Good advice. I chose that side because of the fuel line being a bit neater. If I keep having idle issues I may have to swap it
The... Reed valve I got came with rubber gaskets which just got ate up...but just got the new gaskets made..I also dropped the floor of the intake and have windowed piston... haven't turned it over yet but later this week is will be nice enough to ..ride on
Awesome video bro!
Thanks
Most videos people also add a big carburetor but they still only hit around 40 mph anyway. I can do 40 with just a high performance head and exhaust with a ported cylinder. No windowed piston or reed valve and the stock NT carburetor with a much bigger jet and play with the timing a little bit
Nice cruise bro
But I have a bt and a yd 100 bottom want to put a 56 mm piston in the yd rally don't know what I can do with bt
You need to make a hole in the piston and the third transfer port to really have some benefits over the stock piston ported engine
Ya can have one and. NOt the other tho like a third transfer or a hole in the piston
@@motorizedbicyclenation53cu90 there is a reason if every two stroke with reed intake has the third transfer and the hole into the piston
Great video bro nice work to
Cheers, thanks for the support
Welcome bro any time
The way it just revved out like that on you sounds like you have a bad air leak on the intake side I would assume probably where the Reed valve mounts to The jug or where the four bolts hold the Reed valve in the cap on the revo
I agree, air leak, but I think it's coming from the neck at the carb, as I never put any tape or anything on to stop the leaks. I'll get back to this project once I can afford to repair the rear wheel hub
In my experience, windowed piston✓ 3rd transfer port✓good port job✓ Non synthetic mix oil for first tank. I've came to the conclusion that this reed valve has too much air volume inside creating a bottle neck at intake port(no good) 4petal cage is prone to developing hairline fractures along edges giving symptoms of an air leak.that was seemingly impossible to nail down. Go with the smaller single(dual) reed valve+carbon fiber reeds, coupled with a walbro carb(028stihl) then no more fiddling with jets or emulsion tube.on a carb more suited for4stroke application. Similarly to nitro rc these motors can be sensitive to atmospheric conditions an it'd be nice to adjust on the fly. (28°f AM temps vs 50-60° pm temps)
May i ask how you did this, i want to try it
I never got around to it. Too many other problems with the bike and then it got stolen before I ever got around to it
Did you actually run that without a window piston and just put the reed on..? Been waiting to tear it apart to make big adjustments but it’s very cold here now. Don’t want frostbite when it’s starts as is. Very curious for your reply..Godspeed.
Yes! I wanted to see for myself if you can tune for reliable performance without windowing the piston. Long term goal is to tune, window piston myself, tune again and if I get passsble performance with the windowed piston, remove the reeds once again and compare.
It's been well established that reeds will harm performance without rejetting the carb so I just want to experience the difference for myself. This project had to be put on the backburner until I have some income again so unfortunately it's taking longer than I would like
@@NicksBikes I think that is the source of the heat. I have heard you cannot run a reed without the window...? Amazing no wrong answer, just what works for you is the right way. I’m learning something now. And maybe I’ll try putting mine back on without the window piston..Godspeed
You feel the bike no have power with the reed valve ? Is because You need Windows pistón for use reed valve
It's crazy how we need a window piston to make them work huh.but yea man u can't put a window in with out reed I blew my 1st engine piston and thought I could use a window NOPE lol it say Ard the whole winter but just put a reed on it and they do make a big difference.all I need for that one is a real expansion chamber to see how much I can get out of one a little 47 mm Pistons
Third transfer port works too
maybe somebody asked this before - have you tried the HP carburetor that has a flat slide inside on the reed?
Yeah I've got a few videos on the HP carb. Out of the box, they're not great for a standard engine, I had to rejet mine to make it usable. I found that the HP carb ran the engine smoother with less bogging and 4-stroking but also wouldn't allow the engine to rev as high as my NT Speed carb.
It blows out the top of the gasket because of back pressure
I made the transfer port, the engine runs more, even so it's weak on the way up, I'm going to make the window on the piston, if it doesn't work out I give up lol
It worked?
These guys are correct you need to window the piston and do port work on those china dolls. I got a phantom 85 and after proper break in my bike, a SixThreeZero Hybrid boogies right up any hill in New Hampshire. If you live in the mountains the phantom with 40 tooth is the recipe.
did you even listen to what I was saying?
Robert how do you do the phamtom. Work!
I just get version 3 and i cannot get the correct carburation adjust!!!
This high iddle problem can be solved by either loosening the idle screw, or increasing the size of the jet, but not too much, or filing the carburetor needle in the part that is open to the idle. if your spark plug is white and dry it is very dangerous to walk like that, better adjust the needle, lifting it, putting the lock further down, if the spark plug is black and dry, everything is fine, if it is wet and black, drop the needle. Check that there is no air leak in any part of the engine, carburetor, cylinder, exhaust. this should all help. what helped me the most was to increase the size of the jet and file the carburetor needle
Oh yeah, all good advice. But not my first rodeo. Just my first reed valve 👍
@@NicksBikes oke
do you know how to adjust the air mixture on it? I bought the same one with the reed. seems sluggish
Yes, I've been at this a few years now. This project is on the back burner until I can get a new wheel for it, but I expect I need to up the jet a few sizes. Ultimately it runs sluggish because I'm not yet running a windowed piston. The long term plan for this project was to upgrade and change just one thing at a time so I can experience what each individual change does. I didn't want to just buy a prefabricated reed and windowed piston kit, the plan is to do it all myself, just to see if I can
@@NicksBikes I bought the same reed kit Im pretty sure, mine has no real RPM power, seems just boggin slow , flooding maybe? I read that by using the larger 22-25mm carb is due to its main jet needing to be smaller, someone said around a size 55-60, not sure what size comes in the carb tho..maybe you can join me and my womans discord server sometime, we are always on it just jabbering,we put her computer in a diff room so we can hear ourselves bettter, your welcome to join anytime------ oh my bad,, my reed kit came with a larger carburetor , yours is like a stock carb ???
Yeah I'm using a stock NT
Everybody now Reed, eh!? Month later, how do you like it?
I haven't actually ridden it since. I plan to get back to it eventually
For put that g2 reed valve is better take off the jog out and You know You need Windows pistón for reed valve righ ?
Cool bro! Much added speed?
Too soon to tell. It felt smoother at open throttle, but the vibrations make the carb slip off the intake. I've got a few things to sort out
@@NicksBikes nice
Gaskets blow out the top due to being the weak point, the weight and bouncing creates a pivoting effect pulling in the direction of gravity,.
Huh. Awesome! Thanks for that 😀
I fixed the gasket issue with cutting the intake pipe and using coolant hose to allow the carb to flex a little. Just took off about 5mm of intake, and used the hose to put it back together.
Doesnt sound like its running right.... Sounds like it leans way out the higher the rpm goes, it also surges after letting off the throttle just like a runaway effect. Def needs the carb tuned way more rich
Yeah it was a warped reed if memory serves
What is that blue shit un the trotel cable in the carb.
cheap sticky tape because I ran out of zip ties and I am poor
"Because I know it's going to be shit", lol, your right, Rob proved this on the engine dyno, without a windowed piston, your engine will really lose horsepower, some of that copper-spray gasket stuff is needed to make any reed-valve air-tight, Don't blame your screw-ups on us!, lol, are you a smoker Nick?, your sure huffing-n-puffing like one, lol, I'm really surprised it wasn't idling too the moon, if/when you do the windowed-piston, I wouldn't take the reed-valve off or touch it, it sounds like you may have gotten lucky with it sealing, thanks for sharing.
Nawww I just got fat and unfit lol. That back yard hill is a lot steeper than it looks on video!
My theory is to get it running smoothly before windowing the piston and I think you may be right about leaving the reed where it is
Doubt it’s the idle screw brother. I have heard the blow back from exhaust pressure will cut them out hard to idle but run well. Idk?? I thought you were gonna spray ether and almost jumped back and had to laugh when I saw you checking for an air leak.
Oh there's definitely an air leak in there somewhere
@@NicksBikes the “less inferior “ oz or rsm reed is supposed to be the better bees knees. If that doesn’t work and you still fancy the tinker perhaps 30$ well spent. ⚙️🚲⚙️
Happy New Year Fellow bike builder get a window piston 1 with 2 oval holes and a keihen carburetor and a mz65 clone expansion chamber pipe put a badass shark Silencer and she will be flying that's what is on mine ride safe my friend
I plan to window this piston myself.... Eventually 😅
Sound just like me working on my bike
For them hills u need bt100 or yd100
The BT100 blasted those hills! You should check out my Mk7 build, it's a BT100 with 56 tooth sprocket
REJET YOUR CARBURETOR, your running lean, after changing the intake manifold, try to either adjust the carburetor jet needle, or just buy a pack of main jets, they are extremely cheap. Just check the spark plug after you rejet, if the insulator tip is a milky brown your good, and if not and it's black , that's carbon or oil fouling, and if it's still white, clean, or has blisters then it's lean.
Dude all my bikes were stolen last year. I never got the chance to finish this project
@@NicksBikes oh no that's horrible, I've had my bike stolen too and not gonna lie, I really hope things get better, having any bike stolen is an honest to goodness horrible feeling, I wish the best luck, and again I'm actually super sorry for texting all of that too late, it's just I love to help people out with stuff sometimes, and no I really do hate it when people steal bikes.
It's good advice nonetheless and much appreciated. Truth is, this bike was a bit rubbish and needed more work than I was willing to put into it by the end
Definitely window your own piston it's worth it
I put two perfect round holes in my piston and my 80cc is bitching
Idols like a top
the reason im not looking forward to doing this...is because i know its going to be shit lol... i say that before every upgrade i do to my bike lol nice
Not enough tape 😂, maybe more air flow.
Bro u should see some of the home hacks I done in past and shit I had to do to get back home blaah hahaha some MacGyver s***
Did you modify your muffler I noticed you have a stock muffler if you take the cap off and cut the pipe it will give you like an expansion chamber experience
Yeah I always cut the pipe 👍
@@NicksBikes I got a yd 100 motor I have a stock pipe so I modified it for my motor I'm putting on a jackshaft it's going to be sick
When I finally got around to cutting the pipe on the BT100 it made a huge difference
@@NicksBikes that's what I like to hear brother because I want to hear some RPMs
Odd seeing you riding on the left lane what if you lower clip down One notch in carb just throwing it out I won't be around to end of this video
To much air getting on try to run half closed
I need to find a new rear wheel for this bike before I do anything else.
I blew the wheel bearings on the gear hub running the chain too tight.
I'll get back to it eventually.
Definitely window your piston yourself. And don't make the window too big. Smaller window works better than the window piston they sell. That's just my experience
anyone got pictures or video's on how to window it?

Does a window piston and this reed valve kit work well?
@@samazd4015from what I've seen its the best mod u can do for these little motors that plus exaust
Is You not have Windows pistón is better put back the factory intake is go work better
The point in this experiment is to experience the difference for myself

Australia...so....basically, yeah
The air leak is not come out from the carb cap is come out from the reed valve gasket
get the newer updated pull rope
Why?
