@@garlicinthebread yes! I don't know what it is with Ilocano, maybe because the pronunciations are so hard and harsh that we tend to sound angry when speaking lol. My mom told me that she had a patient ask her if she was arguing with someone, but really she's just have a normal conversation with grandma on the phone, in Ilocano. We've gone to the point where the both of us just subconsciously default to Ilocano when we're angry or frustrated cause it has that impact, y'know? XD

"pisting yawa ka! yawaaa!!" = "you demoinic pest, demooonnn!!!" or "you pest of a demon, demooonnn!!!"
idk how else im supposed to translate those cuz "yawa" means "demon/devil"
shes literally insulting the demon or calling you a demon.
thats bisayawa rage moment right there.

Tbh, as a Bisaya speaker we mainly use the word yawa as "supposedly" of the English words of "sh*t" and "f*ck" but its mostly associated with the word "demon". Because most of the time we mainly use "yawa" when we of course rant or express anger especially with close friends. Mostly you'll hear something like this "Hoi, ka yawa ani bai. Nakalimut kog dala sa akong/akoang mga gamit. Nah, gg na gyud ko ani, kasaban ko ani ni miss." (Oi, ah shit/this is shit. I forgot to bring my stuff. Nah, I'm so gg now, I'll be punished by miss for this.)
Do note that "bai" is a just an expressive term for a "friend" in English.
Bisaya is somewhat of a fluid language and rarely you'll ever hear words being repeated and thus Bisaya conversations tend to sound like people doing a speedrun talking contest if the argument gets too heated or exciting.
Anyways, the word "pisti" refers to mainly "sh*t". So if you put "yawa" and "pisti" together it'll sound more as "f*ck*ng sh*t". But it mostly depends on what is the topic of the conversation and the flow of the conversation.
I hope you've learned something and I'm sorry if you had to read this long comment.

i have never heard Yawa to be the definition of demon, we sometimes just say "Demonyo" or "Satanas".

    • @retrictumrectus1010
      @retrictumrectus1010 2 роки тому +8

      @@sorrychangedmyusername3594 "Yawa" really means demon/devil.
Maybe you are not aware of it because barely anyone calls demons "yawa" nowadays and people now prefer the term "demonyo".
The term "yawa" may have fell out of usage outside the swearing, but you can still find it in the Cebuano translations of the Bible.
"Yawa ka" literally has the same meaning as "demonyo ka".

It's not our fault most people in Luzon only ever go to their neighboring towns plus Baguio, Tagaytay, or Manila. XD
The racist part is outright bad, of course, but the initial just being surprised is perfectly normal. Although people in Manila might not be like that nowadays, further up north you'll see people who are only used to Ilocano, Tagalog, and/or English plus their local languages (in my case, Ibanag). Speak something else and we can be quite surprised sometimes, even if it's a language from somewhere else in Luzon like Kapampangan or Bicolano.

Yawa means "Demon" in Cebuano but is as versatile as "F*ck" in English. You can literally put it in any sentence and it'd still work, albeit with a more _artistic_ tone.
Fun fact; Yawa is a name of a Native goddess, "A loving woman, a powerful goddess, and a fierce warrior." The Spaniards made it mean "Demon" because Christianity, and so it stuck. (Literally any god Christianity meets is a demon). So when you say "Yawa ka" to your wife, its actually a compliment *wink wink*

The comment above me is correct.
Demon as a word came from greek daimon, which means spirit or a divine being, or god itself to some extent. It is not to be confused with the olympians since those are regarded as principal gods, worshipped primarily in major greek city-states. Daimons, on the other hand, are most likely attributed to regional gods of the lesser cities in balkan peninsula.
Once the romans and jew merchants arrive, they tried to convert the greeks by twisting and corrupting their religion; labeling the greek gods as malevolent and cruel.
In conclusion: Yawa as a god can also be labeled as "demon", and its perfectly fine to call out her name when in distress. Think of it as how the americans shout JFC whenever theyre surprised or in danger.
