Wow! Anything you saw that we on our computers didn't see? I remember at the end, Mort walked down to talk to someone from the audience. Producer maybe?
@@LoyalOpposition it is, I'm just talking about the guests and how obnoxious they are towards one another. Cavett should have his own Pluto channel like Carson.
@@bev_buntu4674 Yeah, things were a whole lot different back then, that's for sure! It doesn't help, though, that Dick Cavett is such an awkward-sounding talk show host. I love this show because of who was on it....and when they were on it. This show really captures the late-1960s/early 1970s feel/vibe---particularly, the clothing, and the words and expressions people used at that time. But, unfortunately, I just wish the host was someone other than Dick Cavett.
@@animallover6193 I feel the same way. Cavett himself doesnt seem to endear himself to anyone, he provided a nice stage for many events. I kinda look at him as moderator more so than a host. It's obvious he influenced Maher's original format with politically incorrect, and Maher also took all of Carson's monologue mannerisms. The guests really drove the show and make it memorable and interesting. Late night now is unwatchable, we live in interesting times but it's seems TV is no longer the format to showcase anyone interesting anymore.
@@bev_buntu4674 Well, if you watch any of these old Cavett videos.....when you watch the monologue(s).....two things jump out at you. One, Cavett's mannerisms are exactly like those of Johnny Carson--even right down to the briefly placing the index finger under the nose gesture. I mean, Cavett should have been ashamed of himself...well, at that time, anyway. He was basically a Johnny Carson clone during those years. The second thing that jumps out at you...is....Cavett's "delivery" when telling a joke....it's so awkward...and...well...almost downright "dorky/dorkish" in its/his delivery. It's almost painful to watch/listen to. But!, to be fair....one thing Cavett did well....was....he sure knew how to pick the right guests! Particularly, his willingness to have rock stars on his show! That was huge! I mean, Johnny Carson sure as heck wouldn't have allowed "long-haired/hippie-freak/drugged-out singers" on his show---certainly not in the late 1960s--early 1970s. But Dick Cavett would!....and did! In many ways, Dick Cavett's show has more "historical value" to it than Johnny Carson's show did/has.....certainly during, as I say, this particular time period (1968-1973). And, finally, I'm sure we can both agree that what really made these old talk shows great was the 90 minute format. 90 minutes means more guests, more time spent talking with guests....and!...more authors appearing on these types of shows. It's always interesting to see authors come on Cavett's show or Carson's show and talk about a book that's just been released....and the topics of these/those books were so wide-ranging! It sure made for interesting TV.
Yeah, I've been in fist fights, but haven't met anyone online who has, and I don't use their language; I could never talk in acronyms. Only so many characters - "Two Men Have Disagreements, And Only One Talks About Punching The Other".. It's actually Mort's 2nd-worst appearance, and some suspect he (kind of a teetotaler) might have had those alcoholic drinks they serve in the dressing room. UA-cam gave me a strike for some other bullshit, and I didn't know I couldn't make my videos PUBLIC after turning 200 of them Private.
@@LoyalOpposition I've literally only just discovered him ! I'd put him down as a guy who would prefer mushrooms !! And so what if he had a lil tipple before going on...I think I would if I had to sit with that pompous theatre critic ! If he was a little more confident he could've got more to listen. My favourite comedian/philosopher is the late great George Carlin.
Mort seems a bit different. Like he had a few drinks in the waiting room, which Late Night always encouraged, to get conversations with longer tongues.
He hardly ever drank, but this was probably one night he did. Every late show would basically throw liquor around (no water, etc) to get controlled chaos.
@@LoyalOpposition They got their money's worth. Sahl seemed determined to circle back and shoehorn Garrison/JFK into the conversation. It came across as clumsy here but I wonder if Cavett didn't have him on previously for a serious conversation on the subject. His show was one where serious conversation often took place.
@@DustinBlythe I'll add two more things. Mort just got divorced (and got re-married to the same woman months later) and Clay Shaw was found not guilty, and the hammer came down on him (which is probably why Mort mentioned that he was on 30+ TV show the previous year).. I have thousands of newspapers, and the man was constantly being banned for tame comments. After he co-hosted the Oscars, the gossip columnist said "He's a Communist, BAn him!" for such a tame joke about how General MacArthur wanted to walk ON the water.
if I had to pick his worst performance, it would be this.. I wonder if he had a drink or two before coming out, because he's a bit too loose. I have an episode with all the Fondas with Mort, months after, and it's night and day, as well as the 200+ other videos I have of Mort.
Mort Sahl with Jane, Henry, and Peter Fonda. Definitely not drunk - ua-cam.com/video/NpGLMMM7BBE/v-deo.html
Was at this exact show with my friends when we all shouted "Hi Dick" from the balcony when audience applause subsided. (summer of 1970)

From August 4, 1970. Nice recovery on airbrushing definition, Mr. Cavett.

Even the title graphics are great

this is like a really bad dinner party
It's still better than any show today...

"Have you kept up your painting?" has to be the most useless line in the show. "Cringe"
Who would have thought that mort's son would turn out to be the great actor Bradley Cooper?
Sahl better than Pryor
I was just listening to audio from 1970 where Mort talks about Pryor. It's on my channel.
I just typed in that mort was coopers father.
Dick seems a little embarrassed by Mort's pomposity.
Mort seems a bit different. Like he had a few drinks in the waiting room, which Late Night always encouraged, to get conversations with longer tongues.
Mort did not distinguish himself on this night. Is it me or does Sahl come off as slightly inebriated?

The product of a smart woman says he can't find any smart women. Not entirely tongue-in-cheek. Mort has been better.
It's too bad there wasn't a sharp interviewer who would make that comment. Maybe you should be an interviewer!
