Robin Williams Mort Sahl Bill Hicks Richard Pryor Lenny Bruce Dave Chappelle Jim Varney George Carlin Dudley Moore Norm MacDonald Johnny Carson. The GOATs
He was ahead of his times in the 50s! I have a ton of Mort Sahl videos and he accurately predicts everything. Even RFK's assassination! Of course, because he said it first, he was blacklisted and shunned, and when it was confirmed, no one apologized and brought him to the fore-front, except for a few powerful people (like the President).
There's been a barrage of UA-cam uploads in the last year. I saw him 4 months ago live, and he had the best Trump joke.. He wondered aloud, "I wonder how Trump would have handled Hitler?..... "I'd FIRE HIM!" -- he brought the house down!
I love the little nuances of genius that you find in Mort's work, like the comment he made when Alexander Haig said to him that he thought the collapse of the USSR was a trick by the communists and Mort essentially said if that's so, it was very elaborate.

I love Mort Sahl's observations. I would tune in every night if he had made enough shows to run in syndication on a typical cable network. But the quotes attributed to George Bernard Shaw & Sigmund Freud don't exist. The Freud quote is a variation of a Shakespearean quote, and GBS never said anything remotely close to what Sahl claims. I'm guessing he (or his writers if he had any) made up something that sounded clever & he went with it back in 1991 without the benefit of fact-checking that the web provides now, but they were cool quotes indeed even though fictitious.
I miss Lennie Bruce too, as well George Carlin, Robin Williams and Bill Hicks ... Great comic ... so smart ... I had no idea Mort continued working into the 90s (or later). He was so entrenched in investigating the murder of John Kennedy ... he just dropped of television at that time. Good to see and hear him ... he is brilliant.

@Ryan Wiley Dude, I worked on Hicks' "Arizona Bay" album, considered Lenny's friend Shelley Berman a dear friend and mentor as well, was loosely involved with Bruce's producer John Magnuson on a planned Hicks biopic, and even have (incredibly thin and vague) connections to Carlin's daughter, so I was hoping I could get you to rent a crane to help me get *my* cred onto the bus -- cuz I'm dead broke!
Mort Sahl. Godfrey Cambridge. Lenny Bruce. Gore Vidal. Dick Gregory. Muhammad Ali. Even William F. Buckley from another angle. There is a type of satirist and humorist and social commentator personality missing from the public forum in the USA nowadays.
I just wish that WC Fields, like Mae West, could had lived into the latter half of the 20th century so that he could've gone around muttering "Godfrey Cambridge!" under his breath...
Great show -- oh, maybe not Sahl's absolute best (his late-'50s/early-'60s LPs are mindblowing) but with flashes of his usual genius. Like: "I'm nostalgic for capitalism -- the communists say that, too." With Sahl, it is the asides and the throwaway lines that often provide the biggest laughs (and greatest insights). One thing I found especially interesting: Elsewhere on this site there is a snippet from a mid-sixties variety show -- Hollywood Palace, I think, introduced by Gene Barry -- in which Sahl does his chalkboard analysis of the left, middle and right wings. And here he is, doing the same bit 25 years later. Only the names have been changed.

Ah, Mort seems to forget what happened to Gregory Peck’s character in 12 O’Clock High: the character became catatonic with fear, and had to sit out a mission.

@@ponchocervantes He was elected DESPITE the liberal news monopoly. I find it fascinating that people like you can see the bias of Fox news, but not the liberal bias of CNN, NYTimes, PBS, NBC, etc. It's dumbfounding. Or is it that you are, in fact, deep down, an authoritarian? Maybe you hate Fox because they represent a different point of view. Because if that is true, than you have no right thinking of yourself as a liberal-minded person.

Why don't you compare this show to Carlin's show? Go watch Mort's actual stand-up. I love George, but even he would tell you Mort was the best (go back and listen to his interviews).. Mort not only mentored George, but he also put him on national TV for the first time when he was hosting (and possibly replacing Jack Paar) The Tonight Show.
Mort had great hair.
RIP Mort you were great
He was always ahead of the times. RIP. Have loved him since I was 14.
I was thinking the same thing, I was thinking how much Further comedy would be today if Mort had not been black listed.
