This is seriously epic skill. I played the alto for 15 years. I love your incorporation of instruments. AN the ending is awesome. Keep making good music always always do what you wanna do with how you sound. People like you are what make good music..
+cimmik Good question! Who knows? It's now just kind of a thing I do... (see other vids for more, like this one: ua-cam.com/video/ai49obK0Ljw/v-deo.html) Take care!
+Beatbox Sax may i ask what notes you did for the bass line i am trying to figure this rendition out of yours but the only bass line i know is a octave higher than what you player, so can you leave what you did for the bass line in a comment please and thank you?
Hey Derek Brown, I've listened to all your songs on your fifty-fifty album, and looked at your tutorial videos. I truly find those techniques golden. Can I ask where you got your inspiration for your music and how you discovered these techniques? Furthermore, I'm learning how to slap tong right now, but I'm still not really getting the hang of it. Do you think i should get a thinner reed or something that might contribute to the development of my slap tonging?
Unfortunately i'm not derek, but in regards to the slap tonguing it might help use a wider reed - not that it won't work on smaller reeds, i personally learnt how to do it when i only owned an alto, but trying to learn it on clarinet might be a stretch. You wanna imagine your tongue more like a plunger pulling down on the reed. It's no use trying to pull down before you feel suction first and definitely no point blowing any air until you know you at least have the suction down. Slap tonguing can be done on just a mouthpiece, and i've shocked a few people by just doing it on a reed - whilst it barely makes a sound you can kinda hear it still and its good for practicing the motion when you're away from home or something.
Hi Derek. I relly dig your videos and playing. I love the interesting places, too. I've watched all your tutorials but I cannot do any of the effects you show there :-( I think I am too old for such stuff - or maybe these effects are harder to produce on alto? Anyway, thank you for the good stuff and I'm looking forward to the next video.
+Ulrich Höbler Thanks for the note! And don't give up on the techniques!!! You're never too old, and everything should still work on alto. That being said, some of the techniques (especially the coolest ones like slap tonguing, tongue ramming, and double tonguing) are just REALLY hard for anyone to learn. Just try a little bit each day, and you'll eventually get there. Good luck!
It may be harder on an alto. I've always been told it's easier to express on tenor, and since I've started playing both, i can kinda see it. More air can be pushed through?
guy sounds like he's playing bass on a sax, friggin cool... started jamming out with imaginary drums halfway through, keep up the dope beats brother :D
I love this style of playing. I'm gonna start trying your tutorials and see if i can incorporate some of this stuff into my improvisation. Thanks a bundle! Merry Christmas
This is actually my dream set up and style. I love the P Mauriat System 76. By the way, you sound really great. It kinda sounds like you're playing and someone is clapping/popping in the background because of the slap tonguing.
Duuuuude. Absolutely love this latest video. I met you at NAMM. Embarrassed to say that I hadn't heard of you before that. But, I assure you that now everyone I meet checks out your videos. I was hoping you'd do chameleon. THANK YOU!
+Phil Waud Yeah, I'm still working on that. There's just so much going on, but maybe by the end of the year? Check for updates at my website around then. Glad you like it!
Love you music Derek, has Herbie Hancock been made aware of this version/arrangement of Chameleon? As at times it really reminded me of whole arrangement of the original track, with the multi-instrument layering that you do? Maybe Herbie might be interested in a collaboration?
Hi, I love how that sax sounds and I want to ask you a question from Argentina and if you can answer me I'll thank you very much. Because when all the Bb bass in beatbox does not hear the same normal note ... I mean .... I play Bb bass and I hear the normal C ... is that correct? or I have a detune. thank you very much derek !!!
fantastic...sound cool !!!! good interpretation! I saw your tutorial, I realized something, but not everything .. You can write me how: Slap and ghost notes? so I translate into Italian and it is easier to understand Thank you :)
Still one of the best solo sax performances of all time
Hell yeah. I'm diggin' this. Dude has some serious breath control.
I think the best thing in the world be a video with this guy and the bari sax player from Lucky Chops/Too Many Zoos
YEESSSSSSS!!!!
yes and moon hooch ... all acoustically raging !
Colter Urbani Hahaha yes!!!
Ryan Mayberry the Bari players name is Leo p I'm pretty sure and also that would be amazing
Both have unique sound but I have no idea how it would go together.
My school jazz band plays this occasionally, I wanna learn this and then tell the percussion to take a break
Oh how I love Herbie Hancock. This is a great cover.
Dude You deserve more subscribers than a lot of successful youtubers.. I mean your insane! (in a good way)
Not everyone can see the art.😔
I wouldn't say he deserves subs more but I do believe he deserves to be recognized (◔‿◔)
I'm 62 and I have never used the word "awesome" before to mean "brilliant" but that was .... absolutely awesome. You're on to something here my boy!
I love this. My high school jazz band played this last year and it's so fun to play.
Yeaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing man....
I'm Baritone Sax Player but I had played Tenor Sax before....
This kind of thing is AMAZING on Bari

Outstanding, if you knew how hard this is to do Derek would have twice as many views and subscribers.
It's the most amazing saxophone music I've heard in a long time! Keep it groovin!
Well played.
Why the fleeing in the end?
+cimmik Good question! Who knows? It's now just kind of a thing I do... (see other vids for more, like this one: ua-cam.com/video/ai49obK0Ljw/v-deo.html) Take care!

Yes, thinner reeds help to make it more violent and easier to do abruptly
I wish I could give another thumbs up to this video every time I come back here to watch!
