  • The Provo Utah Temple, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area, will be closing its doors for reconstruction on Saturday, February 24, 2024, after the conclusion of ordinance work for the day. The announcement was made by President Russell M. Nelson at the General Conference in October 2021. The Provo Utah Temple has been a symbol of the LDS community in the area since its completion in 1972. Designed with a modern single-spire style, the temple's exterior features white cast stone, gold anodized aluminum grills, bronze glass panels, and a single-painted gold-leafed spire with an angel Moroni statue. The temple has ordinance rooms, instruction rooms, twelve sealing rooms, and one baptistry, spread across a total floor of 128,325 square feet. The temple's unique design has led to some interesting nicknames. Some affectionately refer to it as the wedding cake, while others have called it a flying saucer. However, the temple's intended symbolism is a Hebraic pillar of fire atop the cloud God employed to stifle the Egyptian army as Israel made her miraculous escape. The church announced the new temple on Aug. 14, 1967, and held a unique groundbreaking on Sept. 15, 1969, serving more than 100,000 members in central and eastern Utah at the time of its completion. The temple's closure for reconstruction is part of a larger plan to update and modernize LDS temples worldwide. The Provo Utah Temple will be redesigned with a new exterior, moving away from the Space Age symbolism of the original design to a more traditional look. In addition to the overall redesign, the renovated Provo temple will be without an angel Moroni statue. The statue was added to the temple's spire in 2003, three decades after its dedication. While the temple's closure for reconstruction may be an inconvenience for some, the result will be a beautiful, modern temple that will continue to serve the LDS community in Provo for years to come. The temple's location will remain the same, overlooking the Provo Missionary Training Center, the Brigham Young University campus, the Provo-Orem area, and Utah Lake. As members of the LDS community, we hold the temples in high regard as the House of the Lord. While the modern architecture of the Provo Utah Temple may have brought about nicknames like the wedding cake and flying saucer, it has served as a symbol of the LDS community in the area for almost 50 years. The upcoming reconstruction will undoubtedly bring about a new era for the temple, and we look forward to seeing its new design and continued service to our community. Agreed the only two that aren’t very green is the Phoenix Arizona Temple and the Tucson Arizona Temple

It's sad they are taking this temple down, the two Temples Ogden, and Provo are unique. Better than the new ones, and no Angel Moroni! The barbarians are trying to destroy our once precious Pioneer Church! I say to hell with them!

They have already replaced the Ogden Temple. I honestly like the design of this one, but the reason why they are taking it down because it’s not structurally safe for earthquakes, and there is no way with its current design without tearing it down to fix the problem. Honestly, I think they should leave the building up and build another one across the street; the area can totallyuseuse that any way and it’s always so busy. I know the new facility will be able to handle a larger capacity but the area is only growing. I wouldn’t be surprised with in the next 10 years we see in a third temple in Provo.
