Probably it copies the nature, seeing geese flying in V-formation. This reduces total energy use due to less drag and resistance occurring at the position points behind the V-point (the head or the leader of the geese). Less drag and resistance happen because of upwash pressure given by the V-point (the front point) and other front points toward the points relative behind them.
