Summicron at f2 looks slightly front focussed, though: some dust on the eyecup seems sharper than the buttons. Which would make sense, as at f4, the Summicron shows, to my eyes, more micro-contrast than the Zeiss, ans seems to be the sharper lens.

You could be right about that. I should have maybe taken a variety of photos while making micro adjustments to the focus to make sure I was on target. I'll do that and report back 👍👍

Oddly enough, I was choosing between these two lenses. I’m going with the Zeiss, thank you THANK YOU for saving me more than $1k CAD haha!

Was this a situation of focus shift on the Leica?

Yes! I believe this was the case. Operator error 🥹😤 haha

the main issue I had with the f2 biogon is that every once in a while it creates bokeh so crazy it actually makes a photo more or less unusable. it's a pretty big lens, theyve had build quality issues, etc. so paying the size cost is a hard sell for me and I parted with mine. potential focus shift on the cron aside, that the Zeiss a better performer than a pre-asph 35 cron wide open isn't that surprising to me. both are symmetrical and the ZM zeiss lenses were more or less Zeiss' last hurrah with traditional spherical designs and are probably the limit of those designs, unless special glass types start being added in.
