Chapter 13 of 13 Granting of boon to Suratha & Vaishya - Shri Durga Saptashati / Devi Mahatmyam

The Rishi said : I have now narrated to you, O King, this sublime poem on the glory of the Devi. The Devi is endowed with such majestic power. She is the support of the world. Knowledge is similarly conferred by her, the illusive power of Bhagavan Vishnu. By her, you, this merchant and other wise men have been deluded, are being deluded and will keep on getting deluded. O great King, take refuge in her, the supreme Isvari. She indeed when worshiped bestows on men enjoyment, heaven and Moksha.
King Suratha and the merchant, having heard this story prostrated before the illustrious Rishi and in order to obtain please Amba, stationed themselves on the banks of a river and practiced penances, chanting the supreme Devi-suktam. Having made an earthen image of the Devi on the sands of the river, they both worshiped her with flowers, incense, sacred fire and libation of water. Now abstaining and restraining themselves from their food, with their minds devoted to her with utmost concentration, they both offered sacrifices. When they, with controlled minds had propitiated her for three years, Chandika, the upholder of the world, was, thus, well pleased and spoke to them in visible form.’
The Devi said : ‘O King and Vaishya, I am pleased by your penance. Ask for a boon.’
Then the King asked for a kingdom, imperishable even in another life, and in this life itself, restoration of his own kingdom wherein the power of his enemies is destroyed by force. Then the wise merchant, whose mind was full of dispassion for the world, asked for knowledge, which kills attachment and ego.
The Devi said : ‘O King, after slaying your foes in a few days, you shall obtain your own kingdom and it shall last with you there. And, when you are dead, you shall gain another birth from the Deva Vivasvat (Sun), and shall be a Manu on earth by name Savarni. And, O the best of merchants, I grant you the boon, which you have desired of me. Supreme knowledge shall be yours.’
Markandeya said, ‘Having thus granted them both the boon that they desired, the Devi disappeared forthwith, as they were extolling her with devotion. Gaining the boon from the Devi, Suratha, the foremost of Kshatriyas, was destined to obtain a new birth through Surya and should be the eighth Manu named Savarni.’
Here ends the thirteenth and final chapter of Devi-Mahatmya.
What is a Manu ?
“Manu” means the Father/King of all human beings. The reign or tenure of a Manu lasts for 72 Chaturyugas. One Chaturyuga lasts for 12000 years and consists of 4 yugas - Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali yuga. The period of 72 Chaturyugas is called 1 Manavantara. Each Manavantara has a different Manu. 14 Manavanataras make 1 day of Brahma. We are currently in the 28th Chaturyuga of the 7th Manu who is Sun God also known as Vivasvaan.
ऋषि ने कहा: "हे राजन, मैंने अब तुम्हें, देवी की महिमा पर यह उच्च काव्य सुनाया है। जिसने इस जगत को धारण किया है, उन देवी का ऐसा प्रभाव है। भगवान विष्णु की मायाशक्ति उन देवी द्वारा ही तुम, यह व्यापारी और अन्य बुद्धिमान लोग मोहित होते है , हुए है और आगे भी होते रहेंगे। महाराज, तुम उन्हीं परमेश्वरी के शरण में जाओ। सर्वोत्तम ईश्वरी में। आराधना करने पर वे मनुष्यों को भोग, स्वर्ग और मोक्ष प्रदान करती है।"
मेधा ऋषि की यह बात सुनकर, राजा सूरथ ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया और वैश्य के साथ वे तत्काल, तपस्या करने के लिए निकल पड़े ।
उन्होंने देवी-सूक्त का जप करते हुए तपस्या आरंभ की। नदी के तट पर देवी की मिट्टी की मूर्ति बनाकर उन्होंने पुष्प, धूप, हवन आदि अर्पण किया और आराधना शुरू की। उपवास, व्रत और बलि द्वारा उन्होंने कठोर तपस्या की। लगातार तीन वर्ष तक चित्त को एकाग्र कर देवी की पूजा करने के पश्चात देवी वहा साक्षात प्रकट हुईं ।
देवी ने कहा: 'हे राजा और वैश्य, मुझे तुम्हारे तपस्या से संतुष्ट हुँ । मांगो, वरदान मांगो।'
तब राजा ने अगले जन्म में कभी न खत्म होनेवाला राज्य मांगा, और इस जन्म में अपने दुश्मनों को बलपूर्वक नष्ट कर के अपना राज्य पुनः प्राप्त करने का वर मांगा। बुद्धिमान वैश्य ने ऐसा महान ज्ञान मांगा जो अहंकार और ममत्त्व को नष्ट कर दें।
देवी ने कहा: 'हे राजा, कुछ ही दिनों में अपने शत्रुओं को मारकर, तुम्हें अपना राज्य पुनः प्राप्त होगा। और, मृत्य के पश्चात तुम भगवान विवस्वान् (सूर्य) के अंश से जन्म लेकर सावर्णि नामक मनु से प्रख्यात होंगे। हे वैश्य, मैं तुम्हें वह वरदान देती हूँ, जो तुमने मुझसे मांगा है। तुम्हें सर्वोत्तम ज्ञान प्राप्त होगा।'
मार्कण्डेयजी कहते है “इस प्रकार उन दोनों को वरदान देकर, उनसे भक्तिपूर्वक अपनी स्तुति सुनकर देवी वहा से अंतर्धान हो गई। देवी से वरदान प्राप्त करके, क्षत्रियों में उत्तम राजा सुरथ भगवान सूर्य के अंश से सावर्णिक मनु के रूप में जन्म लेंगे।”
यहां देवी माहात्म्य का तेरहवाँ और अंतिम अध्याय समाप्त होता है।
मनु क्या/कौन है?
"मनु" सभी मानवों के पिता/राजा है। एक मनु का कार्यकाल 72 चतुर्युगों तक रहता है। एक चतुर्युग 12000 वर्षों तक चलता है और इसमें 4 युग होते हैं - सत्य, त्रेता, द्वापर और कलियुग। 72 चतुर्युगों की अवधि को 1 मन्वन्तर कहा जाता है। प्रत्येक मन्वन्तर के अलग-अलग मनु होते हैं। 14 मन्वन्तरों से ब्रह्मा का 1 दिन बनता हैं। हम इस समय 7वें मनु के 28वें चतुर्युग में जी रहे हैं। वर्तमान मनु सूर्य देव हैं।
