I also love seeing Maverick on this channel. Seeing a player who is typically more on the blue spectrum of magic brings some great insights to the deck that are often overlooked by those who jam Maverick every week. Always appreciate the shout-out Coval 🔥
I've also contributed a Maverick dono deck to the channel in the past, and it's still what I sleeve up 99% of the time if I want to do well at an event. To answer your question to Maverick players, we play the deck because we love it. We love GSZ, we love Wasteland, and we especially love Knight of the Reliquary. We love having every single one of our decisions matter, we love having to learn how to beat every deck in the meta, we love seeing our deck construction choices pay off (because no two Maverick decks are the same, for better or worse), and we especially love consistently beating up on tempo.
Agreed 100%. I do, however, think that this particular Mav list isn't well tuned to the meta. I would rather be on "Dark" Mav right now and run some number of Barrowgoyfs/Legolas's quick reflexes. You'd also get access to Abrupt Decay for frogs and other annoying perms. I just think this list looks super dated.
@@maestrosmith55 Yeah, he mentions that the dono deck was just "play pure, classic Maverick," but the whole point of Maverick has always been that it's a toolbox deck that requires adjusting to the meta. Meta-less Maverick isn't a real deck, it's just Maverick for a meta that doesn't exist instead of the real one you're playing in.
This is why I'll never de-sleeve Goblins or Elves. I like the decks, they still win (It's a shame people forgot Piledriver in a meta full of blue creatures...I didn't, it still wins), they're still fun, and that's all I care about.
Hey, I’m your dreadnought opponent from round 3. Not sure if you were interested in seeing my list from your comments or if it was just idle curiosity. LMK, and I can DM you the list I used in this vid.
Watching you play this deck is giving me flashbacks to the last time I played Legacy in person. I have a 2011 era Death and Taxes deck that I've kept together for sentimental reasons, and the event was (iirc) a PTQ when Oko and Astrolabe were everywhere. I was trying to compete with up to date meta lists against competent players while trying to pull tricks like vialing in a Serra Avenger or assembling a Mangara lock before they completely took the game over. It was a cool event, though. My buddy got to get his shit wrecked by Bryant Cook who was simultaneously playing a Modo league in the corner of the shop lol.
Wow, that round 5 against miracles was fun to watch. So many decisions and back and forth. Love all your thoughts on the deck. It's interesting to think about the line that this particular build straddles between so many similar decks. Like Kaldra seems objectively necessary, but there are only two Stoneforge so maybe it's right to only have the castable equipment??? I appreciate the deck specialists who really want their thing to be the best version of itself.
I've played some MtGO leagues with Maverick across the last years or so. Last one I did just across the last two nights. Went 3-2, with one of the losses being to clock in G3 against WR Initiative, where I had just turned the corner to my favor. It was the first match of the league, and having not played the deck for months, it was rather heavy for the brain, and I took my time to think through all the lines. I'm not an expert of the archetype, but I believe this configuration on the video is not very sophisticated. I don't play Mystics or equipment, rather I have a deeper GSZ package, including treats like: Grist, the Hunger Tide; Renegade Rallier; Fiend Artisan; Voice of Resurgence; the often needed Questing Beast and a main deck Collector Ouphe. I also compliment three KotRs with a single Elvish Reclaimer, just when you want to get the land tutoring going on earlier in the curve. The land package then includes Maze of Ith in the main and Bojuka Bog on side. Sideboard also brings Knight of the Autumn as an extra way to smash those Lockdowns etc. And the Gaddock starts from the sideboard. Otherwise many of the spells match in numbers between my deck and this: 3 Thalia, 3 Mom, 4 StoP, one less Hierarch... However, I don't play Once Upon a Times either, which I think are a trap. However, great to see some Maverick action, love the archetype and this was a great watch!
This is an interesting video for me, Maverick is a deck I played back when I still played Legacy and I really can't imagine playing it now. It feels like deliberately putting yourself at a disadvantage. I generally like power creep and dislike bans, but I can see why some would want changes like that to to go back to what Magic used to be like. The game has changed too much at this point to do that though. I do wish that power creep didn't generally come in the form of cheaper/more efficient spells than their predecessors because I like interactive and mid-rangey Magic games.
What does Maverick actually mean? I play cEDH and I enjoy playing Selesnya decks with lots of stax, hatebears, etc to play "fair Magic" ─ it seems that's the same thing here. Those decks also run as much fast mana as is reasonable cause a turn 1 Thalia or hate piece is a lot more effective than a turn 2 one. I'm pretty sure I've seen Thalia decks in Legacy do the same with Diamonds, Petals, Chrome Mox, etc. Is part of Maverick's identity to not run mana artifacts like that?
I'd love to watch you play a list like this with a maverick expert. Because to a lot of folks, maverick looks pretty dead in this era of legacy. It would be a good opportunity for this dedicated community to prove everyone else wrong.
It's funny to hear him say the game was because of his timing on the wasteland, but a different timing on a different wasteland. Everyone makes mistakes, even pros.
At around 24:00, you have the opportunity to waste in response to the marsh flats crack to prevent the construct being made in the first place. The construct is already bigger than the creatures in your hand. Why not do it then? Is it the worry about Stifle? I think it'd be better to see a second Stifle on your Wasteland rather than on a Dreadnought. Am I missing something?
i feel like if a sword would be used its be light and shadow or even forge and frontier itd be cool to see them relevant in something other than commander
Why would one sideboard Jitte out against CepBreak, especially if SfM:s stay in? With active Jitte, opponent's Illusionist, Nomads and Narcomoebas won't be stay around to do their thing (even with T3feri around).
The problem is that Modern lacks a lot of the elements that Legacy has to make Maverick work. Toolbox engines like Green Sun's Zenith and Birthing Pod are banned for being too efficient, and playing fair creature games is something most decks are better capable of. Maverick works because it drags broken decks down to the fair level and beats them at being fair, but Modern doesn't have all that broken stuff and as a result GW hatebears is just doing the standard Modern thing but without any good engines.
I played and had success with modern maverick....8 years ago. It's been power crept out of modern. Back when leaning arbiter + ghost quarter was a core game plan
"Scryb Ranger blocks Tamiyo, but doesn't do anything else" - Ahem wut!? By that logic Querion Ranger "doesn't do anything" in an elf deck. "I was instructed to play without changes, so that's what I'll do" is a pretty savage line for the channel
Agreed. Why tell a deck building master he has to play an outdated version of a deck? Just a weird stipulation.
