UA-cam Demonitized my original video and age restricted it because I mentioned how Barbara Hutton's mother died. Hope you enjoy
That's utterly ridiculous ❤
They kept me from commenting because I said King Charles looked rat like. ❤
Didn’t her mother do herself in, while Barbara was in the Suit?
After such wonderful research, hard work, and production effort, it must take the wind right out of your sails to receive such a ridiculous notice from YT. I appreciate your fabulous videos and will always be subscribed. Take care...
Love your videos! This one was great!
@@pattisonpattison3639 Yes.
The double sexual standard between men and women then (and now) is telling.
Yes. Because women can fall pregnant - and that makes it a lot worse.
Kudos to her for never identifying the man in the photo, women are often treated much more harshly than men in such situations. She was fascinating, great narrating as always.
The worst that happened to Ian, was he was no longer welcome at White's.
As they should be!
Always the "fallen woman", never the "fallen man"!!! Women cannot fall without the contribution of a man. But I forget: this is what happens in a patriarchal system. Now, in the 21st c. the young generation are tearing into these old beliefs and rebuilding their world in their own vision. Bravo!!!
...I always thought the world would've been better off if the women had been in control...
How true!
This woman went through men like underwear and she carried on multiple liaisons, some simultaneously, with little consequence. Perhaps she deserved some derision for being stupid enough to allow photographic evidence of her escapades. She had every advantage financially and societally and she threw much of it away through caprice and stupid decisions. Blaming the patriarchy is such a tired lament. This rich lady who lived in the lap of luxury most of her life, who got to travel the world and command attention from some of the most famous figures on the planet, was hardly a victim of an unjust society.
Yes the single mothers with six children to seven different fathers on welfare is feminism at its best. This era is the worst and laziest physically, mentally and spiritually in centuries.
Dear darling Margaret had so many challenges starting with “correcting” her left handedness all the way through to marrying Ian Campbell. We’ll never know of course but, so much trouble could have been avoided had she married Aly Khan. Can’t blame her for enjoying male company, she deserved more than that for staying in that marriage not to mention all of her work for the community. Poor Margaret was certainly outgunned in the art of deception, chicanery didn’t come naturally to her. My heart breaks for her, victimized, robbed, and finally destroyed socially. I can’t get over her oh so natural grace and elegance that shines through in the interview footage. Not for the first time, your film has left me in tears. Thank you and, rest in peace Your Grace💐
Grace? 😂
I can remember,As a child in the 1950s, whenever we stayed in Scotland, eaves dropping in on fascinating conversations (gossips) between my Granny and mother, which were mainly about the “adventures” of the Argyles, in particular Margaret. She seemed to be more maligned and vilified than the duke.
Nothing to envy her😊 What an empty life..
Thank you very much for this one and the rest of your videos!
Thanks for watching!
All the usual problems of the vapid rich and entitled - a profound sense of ennui which leads them to lose themselves in excess and hedonism, but any sense of fulfilment ultimately eludes them. However, despite her many failings the Duchess seems to have suffered unduly at the hands of unscrupulous men and sometimes even women. A tragic figure with undeniable perseverance, who had her moments of triumph.
You are an amazingly talented journalist. Very very good delivery and, oh, so interesting.
Thank you. So depressing UA-cam removed the first version. Your words mean a lot.
@@MythicMindScape21 I’m glad you left the video up without the words, UA-cam needs to fix its idiot algorithm, UA-cam kids exists for a reason. (And it’s not like everyone didn’t know why, they do this to so many UA-camrs some have developed code - ex: deleting oneself… it’s ridiculous. And demeaning to creators and viewers.
The narrator has a perfect voice
AI voice
@@yankeecitygirl I think probably not. A little too nuanced, with varying pauses and cadence, and pronounces names well.
I refuse to condemn her, she suffered enough
I hope you do not feel this video was an attempt to condemn her, but rather tell her story.
In all the drama and mayhem, she did have some redeeming qualities. It was nice her daughter stepped up at the end.
And Margaret/Ethel was at least insightful enough to know she was a ‘dumb bunny’
Spot on the situation wasn't helped by the press i know they were doing their job but we tend to judge people based on what the press tell us after everything has been said and done she held her head up and walk with dignity
Another incredible video, thank you! I see the negative comments, but I just feel so sorry for her. I cried at the end ❤
I cried at the end too, doing the research and creating the long videos you feel like you know the person, and then doing the final lines, and ending the story it is almost like losing someone close to you; when you finally say goodbye.
Another excellent video. I like the longer format.
Awesome, thank you! I
will do a couple longer ones a month, in between the short ones.
Thank you so much for this indepth episode. You always manage to humanise your subjects, however flawed they were. I didn' t know anythi g about her and you really took us on a journey through the times and class she was borni to.
Thank you!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it. Means a lot to hear that.
Amazing video; truly a work of art.
What miserable, petty, vapid lives! Superb video!
Thanks for watching!
This was excellent! Thank you! It felt a lot shorter than a hour+. I lose all track of time when something’s caught my interest, it usually happens with books (I’ll start reading in the middle of the day an the next thing I know it’s dark out) and sometimes movies. You’re fast becoming my favorite UA-camr! Thank you for all the research and respect you give your subjects. I fully related her to love of teddy bears and very strong dislike of dolls (I cannot stand them.) I have a small but cherished collection of Steiff stuffed animals, including a teddy bear whose arms and legs moved like in the video you showed, from my mom’s (German) side of the family. They’re old, threadbare and still much loved. PS - I loved!! your last video, about the Osage Ballerina. I love ballet and have never heard of her. What an amazing woman. I’m glad you did it even if it didn’t get as many views as it should’ve. It definitely deserves more. I think over time it’ll get the views, there’s a lot of history in those 15 minutes.
Thank you so much. I will keep doing remarkable women videos, even though I know they don't get the views as some other stuff because I like them a lot, and their stories should be told. I really appreciate your kind words, I am going over my Lee Miller video now, and she also hated dolls as a kid, the only time she had them was when her father forced her to pose with them. Thanks again:)
@@MythicMindScape21 Lee Miller is one of my favorite photographers, but I don’t know too much about her. I’m really looks forward to it. :)
@@ZolaClyde She is amazing. She had such a traumatic childhood. Worked with some of the greatest photographers and artists, was a model, then went on to be one of the greatest photographers ever. Hope you will like the video. Will be a week or two before that one, as it will be another long one and I want to do her story justice. Thanks for the support
@@MythicMindScape21 Take your time, please. One of my mom’s, and mine, favorite aphorisms: “quality over quantity,” it mostly applied shopping - especially clothes shopping, lol (glad I learned from her despite myself.) Your biographies are excellent and worth waiting for. I’ve got notifications for your channel turned on. Don’t wear yourself out and take care. I’m really glad I found your channel.🩶✨💫
It’s so disturbing how some parents are okay with their daughters being mistresses. As if they don’t aspire for much more from women.
😲What a treat, 1 full hour🤗
Wonderful video, wonderful narrator, we all know what goes on in the real world and nothing surprises me , i had a friend who i will not go into details had a boyfriend who she is now married to , he took some photos and they fell out and he told her he was going to at that time post them to all her friend , i asked her why oh why did you let him take and keep the photos, her answer i trusted him , Margaret just got caught and her mistake was allowing photos to be taken , hey ho i have made many mistakes myself 😊🇬🇧
Sorry to hear that, Margaret was indeed very trusting perhaps even a bit naive. As in going through her story, all I could think was. "Stop giving him money" "Stop believing him". Easy to say from the outside; but even her schemes to entangle Ian and Jane, and the Baby plot were just so poorly thought out.
I think I've written comments on most of your videos but this one!!! Where to start? Too much money, too much beauty, too much power, too much privilege and too much time. Would any of us had done things differently? Wonderful video!
I always wonder that when I am doing the videos. Divorce was virtually impossible at that time.
Only under certain circumstances:
Adultery: If one spouse could prove that the other had committed adultery, it was grounds for divorce. This was the most commonly cited reason, but it required evidence, and private investigators were sometimes hired to obtain this.
Cruelty: Physical or mental cruelty was another valid reason, though it was harder to prove, as the claimant needed to show a pattern of abusive behavior.
Desertion: If one spouse had abandoned the other for at least two years, it was a valid ground for divorce.
Insanity: Long-term mental illness that made living together impossible could also be grounds, but proving this often involved medical testimony and was complicated.
In practice, divorces were difficult to obtain due to the need for proof. Which is why Ian, was looking for proof and first tried to get her declared insane, then showed her diaries and polaroids, and also why he was publically dating Margaret while still married, so his wife could sue him for divorce.
You are right, it is hard to judge, which is why I do my best to not bring my own beliefs into the videos.
@@MythicMindScape21thanx a bunch stories like this has taught me to be contented with the little that i got and also working hard for my money coz relying on a man is a problem needing a man is a problem poor woman she was treated badly by the duke and his kids
Oh God. But, the background music!!! Why??? I'm sure it's an amazing story. I can't separate the talk from the orchestra 😢
I found this Bio/story very interesting. I just can't figure Duchess Margaret out. First of all she was adored by her father, but was distant and sort of rejected by her mother, that alone set the path of her character in life. She seemed to be a good woman but in search of love all her life to the point of bed hopping (unimaginable to me at that time and why the need a fervent need to be loved). So sorry her marriage to Sweeny did not go well. I think her life would have been of much joy and satisfaction with him, had it not been for mistrust, jealousy and betrayal. Her period with the American Red Cross seemed very happy and she mingled with the right people. Meeting Ian: oh what a disaster! She made horrible choices thereafter clinging to a failure of a man, how blind. And so she passed away at 80, I do give her credit she was pretty and elegant till the end. Beautiful Frances, must have been a lovely daughter, she just passed away at 86. Both Frances and her brother in the end, took good care of Margaret. RIP Margaret, Frances and Brian. ✝
Yes, she never really did get along well with women, not as child, and not as an older woman. She never really had a great friend with whom she could confide in. She always got along far better with men. At a party at her house, a female guest grabbed a pillow and say next to her on the couch and said "Oh come on Margaret do let's gossip". Margaret coldly replied. "This is not that kind of party, and that is not that kind of pillow". 😂
I wonder how Ali's parents felt about the young love they shared.
*Edwina Mountbatten had a life long affair with Nehru.
I imagine they were fine with it, given who he married and dated over the years. The Wigham's were happy with their 'friendship' at first as well, as it helped George in business. It was only when Ali asked for her hand that George grew angry.
Edwina could not have had a life long affair with Nehru. She only spent a few years in India.
Absolutely captivating I love how you wove the story chronologically and pointed the finger and name the names! I had to watch it twice I enjoyed it so much! 🤩
Thank you so much!
She was indeed a phenomenon. At first l felt a touch of envy. By the end it was tinged with pity. She engineered some of her trials and misfortunes and l won't pretend to understand why she remained with that insufferable man.
There was really no choice. The only way to divorce was to prove someone was 1. insane. 2. prove they were committing adultery. 3. Prove they were abusive. 4. desertion. And proving all of those things was very hard, and depended on the judge. And as you can see their divorce went through a judge who was part of Clan Campbell. So it was extremely hard for her. Which is why Ian kept trying to trap her.
Max was such a dreamboat. ** Heavy Sigh **
I’m so glad no one ☝🏽 has to be judged like this anymore, what a circus 🎪! Sad 😢 for the women, too
I Never knew about her! What as remarkable woman. Thank you. If she was a man there would be as stature for her somewhere!! I wish I had half her courage !! BRAVO MARGARET
The mini-series with Claire Foy is excellent. Fascinating and tragic story.
This was very well done, thank you!
I couldn’t put her book down.
Thank you again for this story…I love your story telling…! U r the best…keep it coming…!! ♥️
Thank you so much.
Definitely worth waiting for! Thank you 🙂
I met the Duchess several times. She was still beautiful in her 70s. The Duke of Argyll was a drunk and violent. She was a tiny woman with a huge presence.
Yes, his son in law Norman Mailer said he was one of the coldest people he ever met.
Excellent video ❤I really enjoyed this one ❤your work is perfection thank you!
Thank you so much!
Did Margaret’s daughter have a happy married life?
That is a fair question to ask.
No, Charles was 20 years older than her. Charlie was originally against the marriage, but Margaret decided to go on a cruise with Frances, and Ian, she knew Ian would cancel at the last minute which he did; she also invited other people like Charles Manners. Even though Frances had told her father that if he didn't want her to marry Charles she wouldn't by the end of the cruise the two were engaged. They seemed to be happy for a while, but affairs, age and other differences caused their marriage to break down and they lived different lives at the end. But she stayed with him.
@@MythicMindScape21 Thanks for answering my question. From Wikipedia, their marriage lasted to the end. And she had a very warm relationship with her grandchildren.
So, the Duchess of Argyle had a traumatic childhood. It's a shame. Not even wealth and status can prevent it.
Another great video!
Thank you
Thank You Great Video The Narrator Has A Awesome Voice
The only really despicable thing was trying to disown the other woman's children and "buy" a child. Seriously? that's mental. As far as her sex life, it was a bit lacking in judgement but not demonic. She was an airhead. By the way, how does one accidentally step off into an elevator shaft?
Yes it was really a very naive plan.
I think she believed anything could be bought in life.
It was very good of Margaret to save the Highlanders from being disbanded by the Labour government. Whereas the cad of a Duke ignored this issue completely.
Ill never understand how they didnt see the signs and still marry them. 21:10
I don't understand how she kept falling for his traps; she said it right 'he toyed with her like a cat with a mouse'
I love your channel. Your research and "story telling" are exceptional. Thank you!
Thank you
Margaret had beautiful eyes. She looks lovely in her later years, impeccably groomed.
Thanks! This was great! Well done indeed! Stay safe! Xo!
Thank you:)
This woman may be all that was said of her or may NOT have been. Both sexes were in the wrong at one time or another. This woman however should be seen through history for what she was A TRUE SOUL OF LOVE & CHAMPION for all the animals she helped & loved.
So well done! 👍
Thank you! 👍
I believe her mother was extremely Jealous of her. Thats why her mother hated her!
Good morning & a good story.
To Margaret
In the way we live
There is not that
Much difference
Between us
The relationships
The disappointments
The diamonds
The materials lost
The road can be long
It it is often short
But no matter what
It's everyone's lot
A life lived to the full
No matter how it ends
Is a life to be proud of
Regardless of friends
What a horrible shallow spoilt person she was, totally revolting
I have been to Warwick Castle, i am lucky i live near , it is a wonderful beautiful place , i would recommend anyone 😊 to look it up !!!!🇬🇧
Totally agree!
Those men were absolutely assholes. I like to think they are better now, at least her dad truly loved her. I had a similar relationship with my dad. I miss him every day😢
Margret seems smart to me. We all have life issues! No judgement
People who are born with all the material advantages...money, position, beautiful houses and clothes and then still manage to turn their life into the worst sort of soap opera. Silly immature people with poor impulse control and out of touch with reality. But it's unfair she was treated worse than the men...The men were such tarts themselves and abusive...Appalling and quite ridiculous
I take offense to the Gemini quote 😂😂😂
Just as good the second watching ❤😊❤
Thank you
YT disrespects the First Amendment.
She was Lady C's mother-in-law.
step mother in law. Margaret was not Lord Colin Campbell’s Mother. His Mother was the wife before Margaret if my memory serves me correctly. Not sure as Ian had 4 wives.
Yuppp. Dumb bunny indeed to think that Ian ever loved anyone but himself!?
Liked the story but the music I found pathetic drove me nuts
How stupidly infantile! She died from suffocation due to mastoiditis.
Sad.. bless her in life and after.
She was insane.
She was very beautiful and sexy too. That is always going to make waves. The patriarchal system at that time, maybe still today, cracked down on her for being unconventional. I love unconventional women.
What a sad woman
A modern Woman sandalous! A modern Man, Jack the Lad.... Hmm 🤔🤔 Judge ye NOT, such double standards, then and now. R.I.P Duchess. 🙏🏽 ( A very British scandal, on BBC ipayer)
OBNOXIOUS PEOPLE, 👿👿👿
