We need a Middle Aged Gear Junkie video "Boss Fuzz Pedals Through The Years" (FZ-2 (1993-1997); FZ-3 (1997-1999); FZ-5 (2007); TB-2W (2021); FZ-1W (2021)). And we need it now!
I've owned the FT-2 & still own the TW-1. I had both at the same time & just preferred the TW-1 tone wise. The last one you featured was interesting & I might check out some day, the Humaniser seems fun.
I subscribed when I saw how many Boss videos you have, these are so good! I have 60 some Boss compact pedals, as well as 4 of the Twin Series, 2 PW-10 V-Wahs, I'm trying for a full compact and possibly Twin Series collection. Including variants of stuff like the DF-2, DC-3, etc.
Not sure if I agree that the FT-2's manual wah is bad. I like the idea of configuring my sound on the pedal itself and then use any expression pedal I want.
I had an AW-3 for a year or two, years ago, and didn't care for the way that it sucked all the tone out of my rig. I hardly used it and sold it, eventually. The previous pedals here sound a bit more transparent, but I'd agree with you that Boss doesn't seem to have got this effect right. Perhaps Electro Harmonix might be better?
Their Tera echo has an envelope sensitivity to it or you might think more of a side chain compression that makes the effect pop when you play with more input signal.
I have a soft-spot for the FT-2 … one of the first pedals I bought, along with a CE-2, for songs my first band wanted to cover. From memory, I think it sounds the best of those pedals you covered here, but I’m maybe biased ^ (and have never even tried to use it as a manual wah). Stevie used a Mutron III for Higher Ground (he was a high profile endorsee of the unit), and it’s probably the best sounding dynamic wah I’ve ever owned (the actual og unit, I mean) of MANY (compacts, Musitronics units, Mutator rack, etc etc). I want to know what FT stands for now, too … lol … probably something disappointing, like *F*il*T*er (which would make sense, given how the Japanese speak/write(kanji aside)/think very much in syllables).
AW3 to me has the same problem as PH3 and BF3: it's not responsive to picking attack. Don't know if later batches fixed this issue. I tend to prefer the three analog ones, although the concept of the AW3 is great, it just doesn't sound and feel so well in practice.
Just got the AW3 yesterday.... Not entirely sure how i feel about it yet (Plus playing is limited due to a pulled muscle in my arm from work 😢) Any suggestions on how to use it??
FT-2 means Foot Treadle 2 cuz you need two feet otherwise you just have a wee pedal or a whoa pedal. Jk I have no idea but it's cool they let you out an expression in
I have a large collection of envelope.wah pedals, I think the Boss sound great, but you are correct about the competition, Boss sounds a little "thin" when compared to say an Ibanez/Maxon auto filter or Digitech synth wah, my favorite is the EH tube zipper.
I have most every filter unit you can imagine. The early analog boss units are as good as the Maxon/Ibanez equivalents. The Tube Zipper is pretty bright, by comparison to those earlier units.

Please continue with the Boss pedals through the years
@ivantorres7661 I do them every few months, I have enough to keep going for a while.

The FT-2 is the best one IMO, as featured on Edie Brickell and New Bohemians “What I Am”.
Great solo. Very unusual in pop songs.
Thanks
Great review of the range. 😊Thanks 👍. Only used the EHX until now.
FT-2 stands for Fil-Ter, because there already was a DF-2 (distortion and feedbacker)

Down filter mode is perfect for "Toto - Africa" intro riff.
@@francisco.amorim I'll have a listen
The Dynamic Filter is one of the effects in the Roland GP-8.
Auto Wah is good for the Dr Who theme
I still need an FT-2 and an AW-3, plus I'd like to pick up the other 2 variants of the TW-1, I have the more common "T Wah."
Nice 311 ❤❤❤
@eddiejaymz2744 nod your head to this!

I believe Higher Ground used a Mutron III on the clav
@carlwinslow5905 the original version does, the Chili Peppers version it's on the bass.
I Disappear (Metallica) And The only thing that looks good on me is you (Bryan Adams) are two songs that use an auto wah. Great video!
I could be wrong, but I don’t think so … in particular, I Disappear has a strong toe-down (manual) wah emphasis on (just) beat 2 of the main riff.
@@kierenmoore3236 I read it somewhere years ago, so I can`t be 100% sure. But it does sound more auto wah to me than manual.

The Tera Echo is a very unique and original design. It's kinda it's own thing.

@TimBardos I tend to put these effects early in the chain, they can sound good with low to medium drive.
