Saw SUN RA at Squat Theatre in NYC near Chelsea (a space that became NELL'S, I believe) and could not believe how much PF had mined, for popular consumption, the migratory freedom of blues based sound that spread simultaneously into jazz, rock and funk. One of a kind card, and I mean 55th card in your purchased deck of 54, is this artist. Art Ensemble of Chicago is high brow Lawrence Welk compared with this Arkestra.
P-Funk comparisons are more common than Pink Floyd. Almost forgot about Pink Floyd. I remember now that Yes with Rick Wakeman was also mentioned as being influence by Sun Ra. Quite possibly the technology and Sunny's use of it in the mid to late '50s is the source.
Also, I remember both Sun Ra and Rick Wakeman were included in Robert Moog's movie Moog, Along with Bernie Worrell of P-Funk fame, with Bootsy Collins...
The baritone sax is not in 5/4. If you beat 1/4 with your hands, you notice that it is shorter (than 5/4) ... and longer than 4/4. Is right in the middle For me, the sax that accompanies the whole song, can only be 9/8

Thanks for the news on Marshall Allen. That is to good to know. Thank you my friend.
Yeah man, I'm imagining your story. Being there must've been incredible (that was the year I was born)
Thank you my brother. That evening on the Great Lakes was very special. 2 years earlier, me and my gal were in NYC, and went to the Village Vanguard to see Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and during the second set when he was playing Ellington ballads, on flute (are you kidding)? Pat Patrick walked out of the audience, maybe 20 people, and brought his baritone to the stage, the rest? Bliss. Thank you for your reply.
Wow these are my new musical heroes who I've heard of for years but now I can really HEAR them
Praying for the day when Nobody ever in the comments come for whatever series/movie, just good taste. I think here we're still safe 😂
try "videogame"
All homage to Ra!
I used to play this on the jukebox at The 'Dube in Columbus Ohio.
Never listened much to PINK FLOYD. PINK FLOYD fans at my hs were out there. But the music and concept albums sustain interest among music lovers. Same to be said of SUN RA. Killer bill would had been SUN RA, PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC and PINK FLOYD. Would had been highlight of an outdoor music festival.
Add Hawkwind and Gong which will complete the universal unity. ;)
Badu brought Me here. Thnx Mama.
Track length: 21:21. Uploaded on 21st. Hehe
+Fyloeu It was ment to be, also posted in 2011 = 2 - 1 1 = 21 21
+AMBASSiDOR EHANi Yeah dude, the uploader originally probably wanted to post it sometime in december 2009 or something ;). Well worth the wait. Seriously I think it's a coincidence, but we will never know...
no such thing as coincidence, just unplanned by human and planned by the universe! we cant always comprehend why :)
2.1K also.
Illuminati jazz. 10/10
totally agree
Not even wrong
Here we Go ▲
Ethiopian jazz
Yeah, Actually when he was young he studied at the Black Masonic Lodge in Birmingham, Alabama. the esoteric books he found there played a strong impression on him.
The place is SPACE !
had forgot about this one! thanks!
Spongebob taught me that listening to this makes me an adult.
This isn't even free jazz. If you want free jazz, look up Ascension by John Coltrane.
This is supposed to be avant-garde jazz.
+fenryx0 what is avant-garde?? never heard of it
bulletfastspeed Albert Ayler
This is experimental/avante garde jazz. Not free form.
Crazy good, can be a hard listen, but definitely worth it
Just finished the full whopping 21 minutes and I think I've been transported to another place, definitely don't hear anything other than the words "space" and "place".
Life begins.
Thank you Shabazz Palaces
Grandioso!
So much complexity like the universe but still in a polyrythmic balance
Lets play it on the jukebox!
The Grown Up Mix. The first mix I heard in 1974. Bought my copy from Tower Records in Hollywood, California. I was with my buddy, Jamiael Shabaka.
beenThere,dunThat...~ so what'sNext::::~sunRa pushed my envelope back in 73'.
here I am 42 years on still waiting for the cacophony to die down.
I'm just an earthbound misfit learning to fly.
sun ra pushed the enveiop in 1959
if played backwards this summons demons!
cheers.
Did you ever give a listen to his album titled, "Angels and Demons at Play"?
Viv Albertine brought me here. 👌
The film is wonderful, if you can find it.
Its on UA-cam, and easy to find the full movie
Sun Ra and his Solar Myth Arkestra! He said that he and his group were looking for the note to "Split the Universe!"
Fuckin Epic-Just got to Atlantis on the back of a Winged ORCA!
Sun Ra is my lord

Is my mistery
THRU THE WALLS!!!
Where is the death grips sample
Love the intro. Anyone know the instrument used in the very beginning? I want to say ethervox, but I don't think that's right.
+Jacob Baird Moog Synthesizer?
damn, space really is the place then, huh
No limits, just express yourself in team.
Cosmic, astronomical vibe.
Men have gone mad trying to figure out the time signature of that sax riff...
5/4 now I am officially mad
@@nickthabit420 count in eighth notes, it's easier ;)
@@gabinoo BTW greatest bass line ever.

@@nickthabit420 I'm getting 7/4 myself? Are you counting the extra bit at the end? Maybe it's 5/4 3/4??? (Now I am losing my sanity)
KX now give me internet points

Note: Space Is The Place was originally released on Blue Thumb Records in 1973 as BTS-41. Impulse producer Ed Michel supervised the recording session. Impulse, then owned by ABC, was releasing many of Sun Ra's albums under a distribution agreement with Saturn Records during the same time. For these reasons Space In The Place has been returned to its rightful place on Impulse.
I have just read an article reading that someone needed to upload his credit card information and photo identification to watch this video. Curiously, I came to watch this.
Thanks to Kaiserredux I'll forever have nightmares because of that... song.
If someone from Devs reads it, here's my message: I hope your PC is so slow, that you will listen to this for a long, long time. Thank you.
I second this message, I have to mute my computer because it’s a potato and takes 15 minutes to load the game, so I get to listen to almost the whole song 🙃
thank god i bought a new laptop
Went on to play some kaiserredux, ended up sitting at the main menu for like half an hour just listening to this like in a fucking trance.
I feel like someone is playing a big joke on me with this
it's a really fucking good one though and I have absolutely no clue why
Off topic, Jonzun Crew did a "Space is the Place" also. Its good! Totally unrelated music...but quite good.
Trout Mask Replica 2: Neon Meate Dream Boogaloo
Finish it, damnit!!! Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish!!!!!
Is it me or are the backing vocals on a tape loop?
This is improvisational jazz, they were all there at once generating this beauty
At the four minute mark rn, cant wait for them to stop saying Space is the Place
Ethan Hill PF = Pink Floyd?
***** think P-Funk, then again Pink Floyd...
***** i never heard anyone using PF as a short way of saying P-Funk
Is right in the middle
For me, the sax that accompanies the whole song, can only be 9/8
Thanks for making my brain squishy again .it was getting awful rigid.
i enjoy this description
The year: 1973
The place: Club Planetside, UN Orbital Ring 3, Low Earth Orbit
I forgot, what was the place again?
keep playing it til you get it
SPACE IS THE PLACE!!!!!!!!!! if you ain't ready...don't go.....KNOW YOUR FRUITS......BEFORE ENTERING STRANGE ORCHARDS.........🙏🙏🙏...for real.......(HOME OF THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL BROTHERS)..........peace...
