I live in S Florida and have a 1971 built concrete house - block walls and 6" slab decks and slab roof with elastomeric white roof coating. Zero Insulation. I have solar panels on stanchions and they are trapping heat between the panel and the roof, and the heat is passing through the roof. I've thought about laying tpo under the solar panels, but the time to cut/fit around all the stanchions, wiring, etc. is daunting. I'm wondering if a layer of spray foam insulation, topped with elastomeric roof paint might offer a solution. Any insight, experience, comments, welcomed.
Foam roofing should last for 20 years or even more if protective coats are applied by the home owner as needed. This is huge since bitumen rolls last around 12~18 years and a VERY WELL DONE tar and gravel lasts 30~40 but usually within 20 years in the most of the cases where it's done not so great but not too bad
The cool part about spraying foam is, if rain is coming, say a quick afternoon shower, you can spray up until it rains. Even the fresh foam can be exposed to the rain, it’s closed cell. I’ve done it many times. Just be sure to roll your hose in before it starts raining. When you come back, same day or next to continue spraying, you’ll need to dry the surface thoroughly before making any more passes. Also, watch your humidity before spraying. I messed up just last week, I chanced it and sprayed a roof wall to make a ramp, had to cut it all out, didn’t get good adhesion. :(
