When I was sixteen, I'd just read Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra and bought a tent, which I pitched at a nearby gravel pit; I was gonna spend the whole summer there, but I bailed (some kids actually put a hole in it) and only in October decided that I had to spend at least one night in it before the winter. I took my iPod shuffle with Pink Floyd's Animals on it along and spent the whole night lying in a freezing pool of water listening to Dogs. :)

While listening to this with you it takes me back to February of 1977 when I was privileged to see Pink Floyd in their Prime play this entire album "animals" take a short break then play the entire "Wish You Were Here" album, disappear for a few minutes and come out and play three songs off of "Dark Side Of the Moon" for their encore!! I still have a Hanging On by a thread hope that they filmed this concert back in '77 and they're hiding it for a 50-year release or something! Because it was a phenomenal concert!! I've seen these guys four times, once in 74 for their Dark Side of the Moon tour and that 1977 "In the Flesh" tour that I just spoke of and I saw them in '87 and 94 for The Division Bell Tour. But I have to tell you that 1977 concert was probably the best of the four because they were really on that night and I still hope to God they filmed it because what a terrible thing to lose when it comes to Art if they didn't film it!! I still remember people passing out right and left because of the intensity of the concert and probably a few other things added to their metabolism but what a magnificent concert that was!! I remember driving home from that concert with my then-girlfriend who later became my wife and neither one of us spoke all the way home we were just I guess in shock or in AWE or both???
The inflatable flying pig photographed on the Animals album cover, named Algie by Roger Waters, broke free from one of the chimneys of Battersea Power Station soon after the photo shoot and flew away, completely unplanned, to settle down at a farm in Kent.
This album is a fucking masterpiece, the remix they did in 2018 that was released in 2022 makes it even better. It was my number 1 Pink Floyd album but Wish You Were Here has taken that spot but they are very close, always depends on the mood that I am in.
The remaster of Animals is frickin' awesome. Especially Pigs (3 Different Kinds) and Sheep. They really brought the bass and drums forward in those songs. I learned something new this year, David Gilmour played bass on both those tracks as well as guitar. 50 years of being a PF fan and I just learned this. 😂
The remix is also available in 5.1 ch sound which is fantastic. For both the stereo and the 5.1 mix there is some super low bass in there that I did not pick up on the original.
During the spacey middle section after the stone, stone, stone... part, you might notice the sound of the dogs barking again, now fed through the synthesizer - hearing the barks change chords when the keys were played. And then we hear whistling, calling the dogs.
Indeed. But what I find puzzling is that none of the reactioners seem to pick up on the fact that the protagonist (antagonist?) of the song is dragged down by the stone metaphorically, but we get to hear someone sink like a literal stone, stone, stone...
Good analysis. Remember the line about "And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone." And then at the end, he's ultimately dragged down by it. The reference to "the stone" will come up again in the album, but I believe that's where it's defined.
@@Elangeni1 Waters has used the 'stone' reference many times over the years, going all the way back to 'Crying Song' from the Floyd's soundtrack album to the film, "More".

Holy crap! I’ve been enjoying your channel since you hit Zep, and I think you have some of the best breadth and quality…from 60’s and 70’s classic rock, up through 90’s alternative metal. Bravo! You loved the hypnotic vibe of Levee and Digital Bath. Perhaps you should try a trip-hop song… like Angel by Massive Attack.
I read a British commenter explain that long ago in rural England there was nearly always a dog or dogs on a farm and they were seen simply as tools to help with livestock, not pets. When these dogs grew old and no longer useful, they would often be brought to a pond/river and tossed in with a heavy stone tied to them. Hence "dragged down by the stone".
I have been waiting for you to listen to Dogs, it's such a brilliant song and both Roger and David but their hearts into singing and playing the story of a Dog who was trained to protect at any cost those who hold the chains. Great job, I listened to this song so many times I know every moment of it.
Your analysis is so spot on. Few people understand Floyd as you do, it's not just lyrics, you being able to connect musical details/guitar solos to the theme and the mood of that part of the song, thats just brilliant. Keep up the good work. You are my fav reactor so far

If you ever get the chance to listen to it, definitely do it Helene. It's not a concept album but was recorded as a soundtrack to a French film called "La Valee". IMO, the second half is better than the first but it's all Floyd at their creative best. Childhood's End (words and music by David, and based on the story of the same name) really sounds like the forerunner to Time. They remixed it for their Early Years box set so there's a 2016 version as well. It gives the album a totally different tone and both versions are worth delving into. When I heard this album for the first time around late '77 early '78 I was flashed about the lyrics and of course this powerful music. Of course I knew P.F. I was particularly taken with "Meddle" (and so on) before that, but somehow all my senses appealed to me and it has stayed that way to this day. There is hardly a band that has produced such timeless compositions and lyrics as P.F. ! Thank you for bringing this music back to life, I'm already looking forward to pigs, sheep and pigs on the wings. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
Must acknowledge the mastery in all of Floyd , that Richard's role is so important. No single cog could be missing in this great sprocket. They knew this when he passed. R.I.P. Master Wright.
Syed, I really like your openness as a young man to the ideas in these songs, and in particular the fact that you make me think again with your new interpretations. Keep it coming!
I saw this concert in Tampa Stadium, Tampa Fl. and they had speakers on all sides and a big Pig hanging over the stadium in Tampa they had the largest steel ball bearing hanging over the stadium too because it was there for some other reason but it added that extra coolness to the show, and on the Ticket It said "An Evening Of Sight And Sound With Pink Floyd" and that was something I just Remember because that is what it was!
The acoustic rhythm guitar is played (by Gilmour) in drop-D tuning. Gives it a darker, more ominous vibe while still strikingly beautiful to the ears. You've discovered what makes Floyd...well, Floyd. It's all the "little" things that go seemingly unnoticed yet add so much to the overall composition and atmosphere. Also, as you aptly pointed out, Roger Waters wrote some of the most poignant, gut-wrenching lyrics, yet somehow they managed to fit them into some of the most compelling music ever recorded. It's ironic that you mentioned the middle synth-heavy section sounded like a "bad acid trip." My first listen to this album (in 1978) coincided with my very first acid trip (thankfully, a very good one) as a young lad who knew nothing of the Floyd until someone dropped this mind-melting masterwork on the turntable. All present at that experience just closed our eyes and held on for dear life as the Floyd took us far, far away.
While some of us were enjoying Wish You Were Here, the band was busy building their own studio at 35 Britannia Row, north London for this self-produced next album. The lush sound from previous has been replaced by a cold dry engineering mix. A possible texture to harness the concept.
You should check out a couple of Gilmour's solo albums from back then. There are the self-titled David Gilmour and About Face. Really great tunes throughout.
I love the self titled sebum but About Face is my least favorite Gilmour solo album. It's just my opinion though. There are still a couple great songs on it like Murder and Let's Get Metaphysical. Near the End is good too. On the whole it just feels a little too 80s pop and less like Gilmour's usual work, at least to me. Definitely still worth a listen for anyone who hasn't heard it yet though!
You should hear Each small candle , Its a miracle , what god wants , amused to Death, tje tide is turning , Perfect sense, the powers that be, Home, three wishes from Roger waters Solo career .... Very good
Favorite track on the album. Whereas Pigs has more a "f*ck you" vibe to it, this one sounds more to me like "it's unfortunate you were used and it's not 100% your fault, but you're going to get what's coming to you, and that makes me sad in the end."
I remember, I think it was in 9th or 10th grade, back in the early 60’s, having to read Animal Farm and write an essay on it. It was one of the most studied books in English class in American schools back then, during the Cold War, as it is a blistering condemnation of communism. ( All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others). I have honestly not devoted much time to the lyrics of this album, but it seems that Waters has taken the idea of animals representing people in society, but turned it into a excoriating critique of capitalism.
My career was working for Fortune 100 companies in the white collar middle and upper management jobs, and this is my favorite album fit for that environment.
You pull in one song after the other from my youth and manage to make me listen to it again much more intensively than before. And you manage that I discover completely new perspectives on the meaning of some lyrics. Great work! By the way, my musical journey started with another great but underrated Englishman - Mike Oldfield with his fantastic album QE2. And from there the journey went to Pink Floyd, Supertramp and Dire Straits. And if you grew up with that and take a look at what's on the radio today, then it will probably soon be time for some AI's to start making music. Oh how glad I am to be a little older already... 😉
Love your stuff, thanks for listening to what helped many of us grow, cheers. When pigs fly" = an unlikely event. It's nice they made the pigs fly at Battersea(which is It's own vid). I even got to help them fly a couple times, on the road, and the bed and plane, too.
This is one of my VERY favourite albums of theirs and I've been listening since the very first one... If I could only have one of their albums it would be this one.... Keep on Rocking It only gets better.. Some of Gilmour's most aggressively harsh guitar playing...
Loved the look of realized astonishment (and maybe "lyrical devastation") in your eyes at the end of the song. It's getting to the end of an epic poem and having its meaning wash over you. I call that the "Roger Waters Effect!" 😳
I think Pigs on the Wing comes from the saying which means 'it's a long shot' or 'highly unlikely' - 'Pigs might fly'. Dogs IMO is the best track on their best album.
Syed, the line 'pigs on the wing' is Waters own adaption of a very common phrase used to describe an outcome that is impossible. When someone makes what is perceived to be a preposterously bold claim they may receive the scoffing reply 'Yeah, when pigs fly!" or "...and pigs can fly!"
As Dave does his guitar solos, you can hear a call a response (with a guitar overdub done afterward) between the main solo, and a quieter, further off guitar echoing in the distance. Slap back echo (short delay) done on the vocals for some snap, and edge, and gentle key chords in the background. Plus those Ringo style drum fills.
I knew that you would really enjoy this album - now you can see it as a necessary link from "Wish you were here" to "The Wall" - This is all related to the Syd Barrett story, post-war paranoia, and Waters' own sort of demented and bitter vision.
The dogs are supposed to be bodyguards for the top pig CEO's. They come in different forms but are many. Lawyers, Police, Army, Social workers, teachers, doctors, psychologists or even climatologists and virologists but all with one job, to protect the pigs at the top.
As a lawyer, I definitely relate to "Dogs" as a song about lawyers. Lol. I think it represents the professional class in between the Pigs at the top and the sheep at the bottom. They are trapped in a "dog eat dog" world, if you will.

" "Dark Side of Moon" is the greatest album ever made, and it's not even Pink Floyd's best one."
What a great observation, "a string connected from his soul to his guitar". That is David Gilmour in one phrase!
Syed, I really like your openness as a young man to the ideas in these songs, and in particular the fact that you make me think again with your new interpretations. Keep it coming!
I was fortunate enough to see them at MSG touring this album and was blown away. I still am…
Gives it a darker,
more ominous vibe while still strikingly beautiful to the ears.
Dogs is a magnus opus, and nobody can change my mind.
!00% I agree especially now in 2023
While some of us were enjoying Wish You Were Here, the band was busy building their own studio at 35 Britannia Row, north London for this self-produced next album.
A bleak, bitter, dark record. But still great. Waters was not in a good place at the time, identifying himself as one of the dogs in the lyrics.
It does end on a hopeful note though.
so strange he became a commie recently - protesting the US border wall. what a nutcase.
@@nancywolf3786 He was always a socialist, what are you talking about.
Dogs might be their best song ever it at least top 5
You should hear Each small candle , Its a miracle , what god wants , amused to Death, tje tide is turning , Perfect sense, the powers that be, Home, three wishes from Roger waters Solo career .... Very good
Brilliant and insightful reaction to the opening tracks of my favorite album. I enjoy your reactions immensely.
Animals. Pink Floyd's epic genius on display. I love almost all of Floyd's output, but Animals is easily my favourite.
watching for pigs on the wing - ever heard of the saying “and pigs might fly”?
Roger uses the metaphor of the stone in Hey, You too, when Pink asks for help carrying the stone that represents the burdens of life.
My career was working for Fortune 100 companies in the white collar middle and upper management jobs, and this is my favorite album fit for that environment.
Great reaction, you seem to grasp it well over this series, well done ,I enjoyed your interpretation
Love love the Animals album. And love your reactions. Can't wait for your reactions to the rest of the album! Keep up the great work!
Syed...
Well done,as always. You found your niech in life.
Love to imagine those dogs barking representing people arguing with each other.
Excellent excellent analysis. 👍
Pigs on the Wing is heartbreaking and exquisite.
You will love this album. Very good review.
That was Fantastic!! Can’t wait till you finish it…Thanks again to Mathew for the donation to do this! 🐖 ✌🏻☀️
On his current tour, Roger Waters plays Sheep from this album. great show, I hope you have a chance to see him!
Great analytical reaction. You went into great depth 👌
Timeless message. 50 years later, prophetic message. Who was found dead on the phone.
Love your stuff, thanks for listening to what helped many of us grow, cheers. When pigs fly" = an unlikely event. It's nice they made the pigs fly at Battersea(which is It's own vid). I even got to help them fly a couple times, on the road, and the bed and plane, too.
Probably my fav PF song ever. Best guitar solo ever written
Another brilliant album from Floyd. Great reaction. .
This is one of my VERY favourite albums of theirs and I've been listening since the very first one... If I could only have one of their albums it would be this one.... Keep on Rocking It only gets better.. Some of Gilmour's most aggressively harsh guitar playing...
Pink Floyd is for the ADVANCED music listener. 👍👍👍😎
Yeah Dogs is breathtaking in its conceptual scope. No one does melancholic regret and bitterness like the Floyd!
I'm pretty sure this song is about Record Company Executives. Roger Water was very outspoken about them being like vampires or dogs
Dogs IMO is the best track on their best album.
agree. best album and best track
"When pigs fly."
Akin to: "When Hell freezes over."
Like saying, "Yeah, that's never going to happen."
i read somewhere that pigs on the wing is a saying used by fighter pilots refering to enemy planes in their blind spot, but not sure if that‘s true…
This song reminds me of my Uncle that died selling insurance over the phone. He lived in Florida and was definitely dragged down by the stone
You are the only reactor I’ve seen pick up on the third person / first person twist. Yea!🤣
Congratulations on another excellent analysis.
Hurrrry!! I can not handle the plot you are making me accept. The …to be continued
theme.
AWE Dogs.. the Business man taking advantage.
Animals my favorite Pink Floyd album love you
As Dave does his guitar solos, you can hear a call a response (with a guitar overdub done afterward) between the main solo, and a quieter, further off guitar echoing in the distance. Slap back echo (short delay) done on the vocals for some snap, and edge, and gentle key chords in the background. Plus those Ringo style drum fills.
Just a touch of Rhodes electric piano with the synthesizers.
Floyd's greatest accomplishment.
I knew that you would really enjoy this album - now you can see it as a necessary link from "Wish you were here" to "The Wall" - This is all related to the Syd Barrett story, post-war paranoia, and Waters' own sort of demented and bitter vision.
They use this same "stONE" echo in the middle of Sheep too.
Got this album in 78 still listen to in
The dogs are supposed to be bodyguards for the top pig CEO's. They come in different forms but are many. Lawyers, Police, Army, Social workers, teachers, doctors, psychologists or even climatologists and virologists but all with one job, to protect the pigs at the top.
I got to hear this album before it was released. I think it's my favorite PF album.
I love your reactions thx
