  • Looping sequences in the 002, all different lengths so they phase with each other. Two short (high, sustained sound); one medium (bass) and one very long (discordant brassy strings) where I mess with the loop length. My left hand is working the nanoKontrol mapped to filter and volume on the 002 parts. Percussion and FX from MachineDrum, LXP-15 and VoiceWorks.

    This was great Barry... I remember coming across "Crashed" on your Soundcloud nearly a year ago and being blown away... looks like the 002 continues to impress!

      Thank you and yes, the 002 does continue to impress. I have other gear of course, but this is the one that keeps on paying me back for all the attention I give it. The OS updates continue to add features and refinements, too.

    Hey Barry! Great sounds! I had the 008r and did not like the harshness of the sound. I now have the 002r MIDI'd to an 001 to save some room. The 008 boasted about sounding like an OB-8 which it does not come close. You are correct about the wonderful sound pallet the 002 has. I much prefer the 002 over the 008 having owned the OBXa and still own an OB-8. The 002 fills many gaps in my studio. Keep playing and making videos! It sounds awesome!!! You're very talented!!

    These are really good. You should start polishing these up into finished recordings.

    Hi from PARIS,
    Great track and demo as usual.
    One question : Regarding the filter and volume setting, could you get the same result without the use of the nanoKontrol ? Just by changing parameters directly on the 002 ? I guess the nonoKontrol is just more convenient as you used it on your previous video as well.
    Best regards.

      +franck superbaby Here the 002 is in multi-timbral mode, which means the 002 controls can only work on one sound at a time. Using the nanoKontrol I can change (two) parameters on all the sounds at the same time. Yes, this is more convenient. Thanks for listening :)

    Im really interested in the 002. your videos are great. if you could compare the tone/sound to any other synth. which would you say sounds similar?

      Tough question. And how similar is similar, anyway? It follows the usual oscillator/filter/envelope model, so it can make all the usual sounds. I don't have many keyboards. I've had a D50, WaveStation and JV1080 for years and still love what I did with them, but all sound very different as I'm sure you know. I've never spent time with any of the big old polys - Jupiter, Oberhiem, PPG, etc., so I can't compare. I had a JX3P, which always felt like it needed help to make it stand out in a mix. I've got a Poly Evolver Keys, another analogue with both digital and analogue oscillators. The 002 just has NCOs, a different kind of digital oscillator and much cleaner than the PEK, which is deliberately 'trashy'. It's closer to the 002, but not the same. And when you want to get dirty on the 002 just turn up the drive knob, and turn on de-rez. The biggest difference, though, is not the sound, but immediacy of the control surface. The PEK has lots of knobs, too, and more complex control routing, but I just find it slow to navigate despite this.
      Funnily enough, a friend brought round his Analog Solutions Nyborg a few days ago. Very lively and out of control sound with lots of sweet spots. I was playing with cross mod and sync and set up a little sequence. I turned on the 002 and the two just blended perfectly. Which reminds me, my first ever synth was an Odyssey. I still have it, but it doesn't get much use these days. The last time I did anything with it was this: soundcloud.com/barry-neilsen/the-taking. Just the 002 and Odyssey. Can you tell which synth is making which sounds?

    Hi Barry, any more thoughts on the 002?Have you used the 008?Thinking of buying one but difficult to decide.........it's a lot of cash for ether so things would need to be sold😭

    • @BarryNeilsen
      @BarryNeilsen  7 років тому +5

      I played a 008 for an hour or so last year and if I had the cash I'd have both, but I'm still glad I have the 002. There are more filter types on the 008, but the 002's filter is still very flexible, being continuously variable between 4 pole, band pass and 2 pole, and I love it. The 002's NCOs have nearly 50 source wave-forms, though I believe the 008 has fully analogue oscillators with the more familiar square, saw, sine, etc. If pure analogue is important to you then maybe you go for the 008. (The signal path on both synths is fully analogue downstream of the the oscillators.) The 008 also has more flexible modulation routing as they designed that second, but these features are being back ported to the 002 as they both share the same core operating system and the synths can upgrade themselves directly over the internet. The sequencer, animator and patch/performance management is the same on both. It's a difficult choice, but I think the 002 has the broader sound palette, but the 008 perhaps has the finer brush :)
