  • In this video we take a look at the masterpiece of dance Kyōganoko Musume Dōjō-ji ("The Maiden at Dōjō-ji Temple"), focusing on its opening section, the michiyuki or "travel dance".

    I hope to see this play someday! Of all the kabuki recording I have seen Musume Dojoji is my favorite.

    京鹿子娘道成寺で道行きから押し戻しまでの映像は七代目梅幸丈と十七代目羽左衛門の映像と十八代目勘三郎丈と十二代目團十郎のしか見た事ないですしまた写真の方では六代目菊五郎と初代吉右衛門、十七代目中村勘三郎丈と二代目猿翁丈、六代目歌右衛門のもありましたが大館左馬五郎は誰が演じてたのかわかりませんでした。

    Excellent video as always, brother. As I mentioned several videos ago, Musume Dojoji is one of my favorite Kabuki plays and it's always good to see a video related to the play. But my doubt this time is not about Musume Dojoji, but rather about one of the play from last week's video, Terakoya: last week, you released a video talking about the best roles in the repertoire of the great Nakamura Kichiemon II and I recently found a video of this play (this video here: ua-cam.com/video/9gX-j2Bt-qA/v-deo.html) in which Matsuomaru is played not by Kichiemon II, but by his great-uncle, Nakamura Kanzaburō XVII (younger brother of Nakamura Kichiemon I and father of Nakamura Kanzaburō XVIII). In this video in question Kanzaburō XVII appears as the main character Matsuomaru, while Kichiemon II (who is Kanzaburō XVII's grandnephew) appears playing the role of Genzō. My big question is: regarding Matsuomaru's role in Terakoya, what is the main difference between Kanzaburō XVII's acting style compared to the acting style of his older brother, Kichiemon I and the acting style of his grandnephew, Kichiemon II?

    Do you know of any filmed versions of these kabuki plays, any of them, in the way that often Shakespeare's plays are filmed in a cinematic, movie fashion? I am interested to compare, if they exist.
