Mahalo Terajima made his debut kabuki performance in Tokyo on May 1, 2023, becoming Japan’s first officially recognised dual national kabuki actor. The 10-year-old, who performed under the stage name Onoe Maholo, is now one of just 10 actors under the age of 12 currently performing. With his debut, Terajima has taken up the mantle of his maternal grandfather, the celebrated kabuki actor Onoe Kikugoro VII.

I appreciate that his father just want him to be happy to live his life and doesn't burden him with family legacy. I hope what he'll choose will make him happy first.

The art of song and dance in Japan is quite unique. In fact one of their other dance and songs came from China. It’s called Ranryōō which was introduced during the Tang Dynasty. It’s actually a song and dance of the famous Prince of Lanling (Gao Changgong) of the Northern Qi Dynasty during the late 500s. He was known to have a beautiful face and feminine appearance so he always wore a horrific/terrible mask in battle. The song was created by his soldiers after he helped rescue the city of Jinyong with only 500 cavalrymen against an overwhelming large enemy army of the rival Northern Zhou who was sieging the city. After such a feat he was idolized for centuries. The song is called, “The song of the Prince of Lanling entering the battle camp” also known as “The Great Mask” The song and dance was lost to China but Japan continues the tradition to this day.

How wonderful it would have been if that tradition had been carried on in China to this day.😢 In that case, we must have seen the difference between Japanese and Chinese expressions today on the same subject.

One of my children had a chance to be a kabuki, we were staying with a Chinese schoolmate of mine and he would break dance in her apartment almost daily and she loved it. Her father sent faxes to us instructing her to instruct my child kabuki inclusion in breakdancing.

You can be born with dual nationality, but at a certain age (I think 21?) you would have to chose a nationality.
An average person can sorta get away with having both since it’s only loosely enforced, but a high profile person like this child actor will most likely have to choose in the future.
