    My biggest take away from this video has nothing to do with the shoes, but rather the idea of looking at "soft love and tough love" as "comfort/protection and adaptation." As a parent, I struggle so hard to find a middle ground between the traditional view points of soft love OR tough love. The idea that I can provide comfort/protection and HELP my children to ADAPT to the demands and the challenges of the world they are facing is quite profound. I'm sure other parents who might have grown up in a mostly tough love scenario can relate. THANKS!

      No idea what tradition viewpoints but tough love sounds pretty low IQ for sure. Also, not something I would direct towards anyone I care about... Obviously lol.

    It’s interesting, I am in a period of my life when I start to see all the comfortable ‘western’ stuff is something that is just not correct/natural. So many things I started to do intuitively, like getting two pairs of barefoot shoes but walking without shoes in summer whenever I have a chance, squatting on the toilet instead of just sitting, switching from bed to no mattress (day 3 sleeping on a carpet), reducing my pillows, non fluoride toothpaste, reducing chemicals in hygiene and look in general, not wearing any stretchy or uncomfortable clothes such as jeans when possible, underwear that I almost don’t feel on my body because I just hate when anything on my body is squeezed - it’s crazy how we are brainwashed to do things that are completely unnatural and even harmful but we do it for fashion or because society expects it - it is a ‘standard’ wherever you live or simply a habit. UA-cam is an amazing place to discover other people’s experiences and to actually see that what you’ve been doing or trying to do intuitively it’s actually what more people do too! So you’re not weird, only a misfit in the majority of society that lives with the idea that being poisoning ourselves and destroying our bodies with bad habits in various ways is completely normal.     Damn, you went hard! I'm only about a month into wearing barefoot shoes, and even after taking in as much information as I could by watching tons of videos, it's still not an easy transition. I always thought I had flat feet, because I overpronate. I always wore skate shoes when I was younger, and when I worked a retail job in like 2014-2017, I was wearing more formal shoes, and by the end of my shifts, my ankles would hurt so much that I could barely walk. The manager of the store had a friend that worked in SportChek in the shoe department who would come in just to talk to her for a bit. She heard about my ankle pain, looked down at how I was standing, and said I need new shoes. I went in and she got me into some Asics stability shoes. I've been wearing Asics ever since, as my ankle pain was pretty much gone. I also sprained my foot on my way to work one day in 2016, I believe I was wearing the Asics shoes. My foot never fully recovered as it would always hurt more than my right foot when walking or standing for extended periods of time, and now in barefoot shoes it also feels weaker. I try to go out for a walk in the barefoot shoes just for 20-30 minutes at a time, maybe more sometimes, and even then I've still been pretty sore. I say that I "thought" I had flat feet, because after changing how I walk and stand and focusing on keeping my ankles straight, I do have a bit of an arch when I'm not overpronating. Awesome! I need to build up 30 years of lost strength from bad form, comfortable shoes, and my injury (that I may or may not have walked/worked on for 3 days before going to the hospital. 24 hours of working on a sprained foot, it wasn't great, but I didn't know it was sprained). I got a long way to go, but I'm willing to suffer a bit now so that my feet will be able to support me all by themselves in the future.

    Excellent video. I have been on a minimalist shoe journey for almost a year now. It is very wild how senseless my feet feel when I go back to an old shoe now.

    Yes, I agree that everyone can spend time in real bare feet. You also get the energy of the earth through your feet. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

    Haven't seen much on barefoot when I started my journey into it after an ankle injury, that was like 15 years ago. But I started with a wide shoe, changing my weight to the front foot and having my feet parallel to each other, plus working barefoot whenever possible. It takes a while with lots of massages on the calves as they work hard as a spring...
    I completely recovered my ankle issue and walking on the front foot protects your feet in the sideway movement as the middle foot can twist.....

    i wear feiyue. they are the best of both worlds. they flatten out after 3 weeks of wearing them.

      Feiyue aren’t barefoot as the toebox is tapered with not enough toe splay.

    OMG! i think i just realised how i hurt my knee!!!
    I started the transition to barefoot shoes in july/aug within my house and gradually started using them for short walks, which gradually got longer as i got fitter. I thought that because of my general lack of fitness (MECFS) that i wouldnt be able to go too far too soon. I had been perfectly fine wearing barefoot at home all day every day, except for the odd hour when id get food or do my walk when i started walking wearing them.
    The knee pain just crept up on me after 1-2months. I kept walking on it for a further 2 weeks, only gradually reducing my activities because i was resentful after having 9.5 years being bed and sofa-bound, that now my health has improved enough to go for walks etc, ANY reduction in activity is a big downer.
    Id put the pain down to crossing my legs too much, or having them curled to the side. But ive also been doing that for years n years. Still its a good habit to be breaking i guess XD
    Sometime in oct, i quit my walking and saw no improvements. 2 weeks ago i finally spoke to the pharmacist. He said i hadnt been resting enough, needed to elevate more and also use compression and ice pack despite no visible inflammation etc. And truth told, it did start getting better n then i started getting frustrated and cranky and stopped looking after the knee properly again! XD

    hey i have flat feet and i have terrible balance. I am still wondering if i should switch to flat feet. I did displace my knee cap a little bit but its getting better. I generally use the cushioned asics

    I have barefoot lifestyle 60 years . I am a sprinter so I dont ld. But you do not run or even walk on concrete unlock necessary. I use grass or dirt trails or rock hikes. Do not run on concrete in any shoe. You may have to modify your line to accommodate this. It takes 2 years to transition. You have completely re gate your body. Sometimes people think I'm drunk because of my long strides. You can't really gradually stop using old shoes. Once you stop using them they will hurt if you keep wearing them. It will take months for your calves to stop hurting. It's amazing what a few degree will make. Stop running and walking on concrete. Buy work boots 2 sizes too big if you have to wear them for work. Don't get in a hurry. Breathing is very important!! Find your rhythm. Were the first marathons on concrete? I just don't get modern races.

    I am curious to know how you think you would have fared hiking in a barefoot hiking shoe like Xero makes instead of trying to wear any sandals on the PCT. Might that have been the perfect balance between the two styles you ended up using?

      I would say that's probably the case. I've been backpacking in Merrell barefoot shoes for 7 years. Granted we never do more than 10 miles a day, but it is trails covered in rocks, tree roots etc.. I've never gotten a blister, but I also wear wool socks. Partly to avoid the rubbing of the shoe, and partly because sometimes we are in the mountains in February and March. Also you can tie a shoe much tighter than you can a sandal.
      I also prefer the 2 mm sole to something like the Altra because I feel like I'm less likely to twist an ankle. I've been wearing them so long that the articulations in my feet allow my feet to wrap around stones and tree roots, whereas the rigid sole wouldn't allow that.

    I recommend to go straight barefoot. I got injured by going too fast wearing barefoot shoes. I would have gone nice and slow if I had gone completely barefoot. Plus you can't beat the feel of the earth and the texture you get when you go barefoot.

    you don’t mention the grounding of the body with contact to the earth… i am guessing bare foot shoes have rubber insulation soles

    Barefoot shoes aren't really for overweight people. Obesity is a modern problem caused by ultra processed food (read Ultra Processed People by Chris van Tulleken). Our ancestors weren't overweight, so we haven't evolved to walk or run barefoot when overweight. Cushioning is essential above a certain bmi.

    Five finger shoes are where it is not barefoot shoes. Any kind of foot mittens is going to impact and ruin the development of the foot. Barefoot mittens is still not it, either no shoes or five fingers.
    Could you imagine a life time of wearing mittens on your hands, and how it would degrade the function of your hands? My feet and toes spread just like my hands and I have a ton of range of motion and dexterity in my toes. I can stand on my literal tip toes.
    If you like "barefoot" shoes either go shoeless which I do alot, especially outside or go five finger if you want to have real feet.
    Five fingers shoes really bring your feet alive. Sorry the first comment I wrote for messed up so I am sure this rewrite sucked. Anyway good luck everyone and great channel.

    Before anyone uses barefoot shoes, they should first learn how to walk entirely barefoot. After going around barefoot for a few months, then and only then try barefoot shoes. Don't go straight into barefoot running with barefoot shoes. First learn how to walk with no shoes at all, as humans have done for millions of years. Barefoot shoes are only useful when one can't go actually barefoot. But any opportunity you have to let your feet be entirely naked, don't wear shoes. Nothing replaces being fully barefoot.
