I've seen Jethro Tull live 26 times in my life - it is about the entire experience. Ian Anderson is a self-taught multi-instrumental genius who takes his concert performances very seriously. He treats his live shows like a business man whose job is to entertain. He brings wit, intelligence, athleticism, theatrics, humor, social commentary, and a bit of tongue-in-cheek spice to his concerts.

Spot On! One of the 6 times I saw him we had front row, right against the stage, 3 feet from his Mic Stand! An experience I will never forget, they always brought the house down!

I saw an interview with Anderson many years ago. He was like a proper educated Scottish gentleman puffing thoughtfully on a pipe and giving the most intellectual and eloquent answers to the interviewer...the complete opposite of his "madman" stage persona.

Jethro Tull is one of the great rock bands of all time. I first saw them back in 78, at the Long Beach arena. The band was incredible with Ian Anderson the lead singer. The rest of the band could play all different instruments.
Aqualung is a classic all time rock album....

This is Tull in their "classic" lineup - most of this band played on their greatest albums and were with Tull from 1971-81 - the "golden age" of touring arena rock acts and Tull's output went back and forth between hard rock, progressive, and later in the decade a mix of hard rock/British folk. In the era Tull was one of the premier "must see" touring acts. Ian Anderson is a multi instrumentalist vocalist, songwriter, producer, and one the greatest front men who ever was.

Another funny story about is daughter. When she was very young, she signed up to take flute lessons. She came home and showed her dad how she was taught to hold the flute. He saw and realized he was doing it all wrong so he taught himself again, but using the proper hold on the flute then. I find the group entirely entertaining. I got to see them 3 times in the 70's and they always did a fantastic show. You can't say Ian isn't a musician as he played 2 instruments in this song and also does acoustic guitar and his songwriting is stellar.

From Ian Anderson's outfit this looks like the "Songs from the Wood" tour. In any case this was the final part of their (always long) encore, Locomotive breath morphed into "Land of Hope and Glory" (for the balloons launched into the Audience) and then back into the final few lines of "Back Door Angels" a song which started their encore a few songs back. He started the show with the red bowler hat on his head, which lasted for about an hour.... and placed it back on his head at the end of the show. Tulls live shows were always full of entertainment, theatricals, and energy.... as well as absolute magnificent musicianship.

Jethro Tull was one of the very best bands of their era and were Phenomenal musicians, with a real unique brand of Rock Including rock, classical, blues, folk, jazz, Renn with many classic albums and a compelling stage show. I saw every tour of theirs in the 70s from Aqualung on, they always put on an amazing concert, try Thick as a Brick sometime, they were truly a great band. Martin Barre on lead guitar, totally underrated, he was a monster every we time I saw him, enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎻🎷🎶

Great reaction. And for the record, Ian Anderson is quite a technical player for sure. Incredibly creative and highly talented. And he's a master of playing the flute in that way, it's amazing. But he's also a multi-instrumentalist.
It's very difficult for me to think of it as primarily entertainment because most of us fell in love with the songs and bought the albums and played the hell out of them, it's just that if you were lucky enough to go see them live, you got an incredible dramatic show on top of it. Many great rock bands of the era had a lot of crowd-oriented entertainment going on at their live concerts, even as they were totally rocking out.

Ian is an excellent acoustic guitarist. Took up the flute when he realized he'd never be a great guitarist and taught himself. Not a technician at it, but has mastered the fit into their music. Stagecraft is his true mastery IMO. The band as a whole is awesome too.

Tull is a lot about both entertaining and music. What Ian does is best described as theatrical clowning that dates back to Shakespearian stages. Their musicianship is remarkable and nearly everyone on stage is multi-instrumentalist. Martin Barre can shred guitar with the best.
You have to remember that these guys were able to go onstage in the 70's and reproduce highly complicated arrangements of very long songs with very little technical assists.

Ian Anderson is pure genius. Here is what Schopenhauer says about genius: "It is not only in the activity of his highest powers that the genius surpasses ordinary people. A man who is unusually well-knit, supple and agile, will perform all his movements with exceptional ease, even with comfort, because he takes a direct pleasure in an activity for which he is particularly well-equipped, and therefore often exercises it without any object. Further, if he is an acrobat or a dancer, not only does he take leaps which other people cannot execute, but he also betrays rare elasticity and agility in those easier steps which others can also perform, and even in ordinary walking." As with Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee, it is pure hypnotic joy to behold the rare true genius.

They took on the persona of traveling troubadours - "Renaissance" rock/jazz/fusion/prog/blues/and more. Ian Anderson was (and still is) a musical and lyrical genius. The music is most important, but the presentation is what brought the crowds. There is always a message - sometimes obvious, most times allegorical. They crossed all genres - much like Pink Floyd and Steely Dan, there was no way to pigeonhole them to a specific category. A truly unique band like no others, before or since. Commenters below have warned of the "rabbit hole" you're entering here - IMO, the JT catalog is more like a deep mine shaft, with literally dozens of side tunnels (each offering a new surprise). Have fun with these.

Much of Ian Anderson's writing is a parallel which heavily criticizes modern society for cultural abuse of its people and our natural environment - all for the sake of corporate and government greed. Anderson has been very outspoken in his views and puts much of his money into wildlife preservation and renewable food resources (salmon farming).
As a result of his outspokeness, Anderson has made many enemies from the powers behind the commercialization of music. This is one of the main reasons you will not find Jethro Tull in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, despite their talent. Mainstream media magazines and radio stations also shunned Jethro Tull for the same reasons.

Method acting is like when Robert DiNero was a cab driver for a long time before filming the movie Taxi Driver to help him get in to the role and look more authentic.

Guys this was my very first concert. It was called the Bursting Out Tour. MSG in NYC. They’d close the show with this, they’d jam on this one forever. It was either 75 or 76, he’s a beast on that flute. Man did they blow the roof off that place. This was a much shorter version. And Ian Anderson is quite a showman. Peace and Continued Success ❤

The segue into the "graduation" tune is from Edward Elgar's, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 published 1901. There is nothing more British than this tune.

At 7:00, Americans know it as graduation music. It’s actually an English tune called Land of Hope & Glory from Pomp and Circumstance and has accompanying lyrics. It is very patriotic to us Brits.

I was at the "Bursting Out" tour which this vid is from, and actually got to push the giant balloon up and out further into the crowd. This was the encore that ended the show. Insane levels of energy!

I saw Jethro Tull, could have been the same year, or the year before. They had 2 of those balloons they showed, the concert was in a hockey arena, and those balloons were half filled with helium, other half oxygen, and they throbbed!! Crowd got them all the way up to the rafters, and then started passing it across to the other side, and they had all kinds of lights on them, changing colours on their slow, majestic flight.

Take a minute to appreciate Ian Anderson's lungs! The flute takes a vast amount of breath, and to go from leaping around, to playing, to singing would have most people rolling on the ground fighting for breath.

I've always loved Jethro Tull because of their songwriting, lyric writing and insane technical abilities. They are virtuoso musicians who play extremely intricate tunes, and constitute one of the greatest progressive rock groups of all time. Ian Anderson in particular is a musical genius.
They also tried to be as entertaining and active as possible on stage. Having said that, I never really enjoyed their over-the-top live antics, and always found them to be somewhat rehearsed and unspontaneous. More for show than a sincere expression of feeling.
But the MUSIC!!! The quality of the music they produced is astounding and beyond criticism. They were masters at their craft.

He plays the flute like some play guitar. It's about the actual music. One of the great English prog bands. Ian Anderson (the singer/flautist) started as a pied piper persona or like a Court jester if you want and invented rock with medieval or old English folk influences. You can see him in action in that costume around early 70s: "My God" live on UA-cam.

RIGHT ON right on, method acting was Ian`s schtick and dudes it made the show even more exciting then your average rock act...and a Jethro Tull show was a event, people would get into their old timy outfits, especially the hippie chics...unfortunately older mama`s weren`t so hot on the young dudes as they are in today`s world, but my Cajun Queen came to my rescue... SO what`s next BEATS? let`s get this holiday party started and giddyup a Diing Dong
