Viola is such an underappreciated instrument, it has such a great tone.
0:55 - "I don't have a modern [viola] to compare how high it would fly."
Violist Nearly Accidentally Makes Up Viola Joke
Better than "violinist accidentally makes viola accident". Bratsch(e)! Oops...
And.. only you laughed 🤦🏻♀️
The viola: perhaps the least appreciated, important instrument of the orchestra of any period. But then, it's hard to get due attention when you're squeezed between the egos of the soprano and the tenor...
Im a violist, i liked the video even before i watch it. 😂
You know it.
Its an underrated instrument that most people haven't heard of
I haven't played in a long time but playing viola is wonderful
SAMEEEE
Fasti go away
I honestly LOVE the sounds of the baroque instruments far above the sounds of the modern...

Well played. What a wonderful talent you are.
I could listen to you play this all day. I love this channel.
I don't get all the spottish/annoying comments about the viola being far less interesting than the violin. If both exist and have existed for centuries, it means they are both useful and needed. Besides, I like how mellow and warm violas sound.
Not to mention that if an orchestra reduces the ratio between violins and violas, the overall sound is perhaps less penetrating but incredibly soft, dark and charming. Mozart, for example, becomes even more fascinating.
Violist here. Thank you, you made some very clever points.
I agree. Your comment did make me wonder what the effect might have been if Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante was scored for two violas instead of violin and viola. Even playing very high up, the viola has its own character distinct from that of the violin and in my view far more fiery than the cello and other string instruments.
The viola is characteristically louder, and in my orchestra we have about three violas. Both sections of violins don't play very loudly, so you can hear more of the Viola section. I'm a Viola Player, abd I'm all about pride in my instrument, but sometimes balance for an orchestral piece is necessary, especially if the Viola isn't a very important part of the piece. The Viola is my favorite instrument, and always has been, but it shines in it's own way. Us Viola players don't need the melody to show how amazing we are. ^^
This same issue comes with being a bass player in a modern rock setting. Always put down buy guitarists with no respect for the bass player or their musical contributions to the band as a whole.
Violinist here who is triggered
I played a trombone. It was baroque but it got fixed.
couldn't resist that. I have enjoyed watching this series.
If its not baroque, don't fix it...now I shalt show myself to the door, thank you.
Dave Haskell lol
I just watched a concert film this violist was in for a class I'm taking. Small world!
That was fun, thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill.
0:55 - I died 😱😂
Let's hear your German then ......
I died because of the wrong physics haha :D
Very nice, light, airy sound. Thank you much.
My favorite instrument in the orchestra. :-) I always say that if a violin sounds like a (screechy) soprano, then a viola sounds like Aretha Franklin.
Me too! I've always loved the sound of the viola the best among the string instruments followed by the guitar, double bass and violin. I felt the violin is a lot like Chante Moore and the viola (if playing Paganini's Grand Sonata for Viola & Orchestra) Mariah Carey (early 1990s only), although I like the analogy to Aretha Franklin too!
But are C strings sound like a goose.
Janis Cortese well rip Aretha Franklin
Interesting
Great video!! Those few bars of Bach she played beautifully illustrate why people prefer period instruments over modern ones. I wish she had told us more after she played, but I love how it began an ended, she appears with a WHOOSH, explains the instrument, plays it brilliantly, stops, looks up in a sort of ironic expression, then disappears with a WHOOSH!!
The problem with those knocking the viola is that they have no understanding of its role in the sound of a string section. The viola has a unique timbre not achieved by other members of the string section. That violinists could be here knocking the viola just shows how ignorant some musicians can be; the kind that end up mere sight-reading machines in little orchestras.
At least I can hear the cellos sometimes
We made the test. A string quartett with a violin III sounds thin. A string quartett with a cello I sounds like more, but the violins sound thin. Without a viola, vionins don't sound.
I play a modern viola and I was actually surprised to hear that the baroque version has a brighter sound than mine. I think I actually prefer the modern viola’s darker tone. I do have an aversion to high pitched noises though so maybe that’s why.
same
I’ve noticed I’m biased towards the lower pitched instruments, high pitches tend to hurt my ears.
I know there are some TwoSetViolin fans here.
yaaass! *makes double-L sign*

Very delightful sounding. Thank you!
Gorgeous! Brandenburg 6 is some voodoo magic.
Très belle explication de Madame Simone Jandl , j’adore la musique baroque et l’art de cette remarquable virtuose
Bravo.. I truly love to watch musicians at play.. you sounded superb my dear thank you!
Beautiful music thank you for your sound
These instrumental vignettes are fascinating, and I really appreciate being able to hear experts talk about their instruments! I’ve listened to Jordi Savall’s recording of the entire set of Beethoven symphonies on period instruments, and it is _incredible!!!_ Its such a different sound, so particularly beautiful, that I’d encourage everyone to listen to them here on UA-cam. This does not mean I think the older instruments are better, or the tuning, or anything….it’s just a really cool, different way to enjoy such compelling music, if your mind is capable of enjoying both the period and modern instrument performances. Thankfully, mine is!
2:19 that's some damn fine fiddling.
+OrchestraEnlighten *Very insightful article.* Being used to the wide-ish fingerings of guitar, as well as mindful of the limitations of both monofilament nylon and treated sheep tripe, I'd be after a five-string _Viola,_ similar to the four-string demonstrated here with an appropriately shortened fingerboard radius. Assuming Schaller® has a tailpiece with five fine tuners available for the fairly low action height of a reproduction Baroque string, I'd opt for fairly light steel strings: Silverwound C3, nickelwound G3, titanium-wound D4, aluminum-wound A4, and plain E5, with a natural- or synthetic-haired French bow as appropriate.
what a sound you have!! bravo!!
Simone has something very special, besides being one of the finest viola players in the world, a golden smile.
The baroque viola sound like a higher pitch cello
Derpy Mudkip It's trying to look like a violin but trying to sound like a cello. The end result is that it looks like a retarded violin that sounds like a cow
Not surprising -- It _is_ a "higher pitch cello".
Violas, if played well, make really beautiful sounds. Very warm and rich tones
Her hands are beautiful of course
These are beautiful videos, I would like to see them with a bit more playing of the instrument and some better links to orchestra recordings.
See my comments today
Lovely!
That is a gorgeous viola!
Beautiful
¡Suena genial!
Hey, I can help with that! I have a copy of a medieval catapult here. Let's see which one flies higher - Baroque or Modern :P
Jerry Kitich a catapult would probably sound better than this viola
Why is this not the best comment
Me enamoré!!!

Not quite. The difference between the views of the baroque violin and viola is less than a thousand, as of 12/10/17.

I once met a violist and mistakenly referred to his instrument as a violin. He became visibly upset and would not talk to me after this mistake. Do violinists bully violists? It seemed like PTSD
Thank you for video! And some addition - the bow was different from modern)
Wow, this viola actually sounds really nice and very sweet
Aaahh she is beautiful .. great instrument
"Flying violas" - a good name for a baroque viola jazz quartet.
Why is her bow so loose? You ask. The bow makes music too, you can have a high tension bow and the viola will scream higher. Or the. Tambor will be more mellow with less tension on the bow. More reedy sounding. That's basicly it.
Welp, Viola is very important.
If u don't have a Viola in the bang, you don't have the merged sound.
I fell in love with Simone...
*The Lady of many faces*
my nickname in college
Cool.
I had anxiety when she tossed the instrument
Why is her bow so loose?
Beautiful viola sound ! I prefer the 415 Hz baroque tuning than the modern 440 Hz.
personally i like the baroque strings more , mental strings just heard sharp and noise
How hipster you have to be to play the baroque viola?
(just kidding , great video!)
Just enough to fix it
More like how awesome of a person you have to be 🎻❤️🔥 Simone Jadle is such queen
Greetings from a tenor violist! (48 cm)
very neat. Im a violist myself. May I ask where you got your viola at?
Carl Smith, how is your tenor viola tuned? I have always wanted a tenor but I could not find a F or G string that could sound well in the low register.
Wonderful explanation
Wait aren't all violas baroque-en anyways
thank you
I'm typically pretty bad at remembering names and even worse at remember faces, but I recognized her from this one UA-cam video of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos that I used to watch a lot a few years ago. ua-cam.com/video/Z4Ry71tOkwg/v-deo.html Thanks for making great introduction videos for baroque instruments.
Yes, it's Simone, 2007, I have the DVD. amazing performance, as Danusha indeed (Simone's partner at the time). I commented that performance few weeks ago on this page.
Agree! Also Simone and Tabea are some of the reasons I wanted to become a violist 🧐
can someone explain the actual difference between this and a violin ?
Viola is a deeper sounding instrument it’s played on the alto clef and has different strings than a violin. In orchestras we often play accompaniment while the violin usually gets the melody. The viola is bigger in size as well.
Viola is ugly
Violin sounds better. Viola sounds... Yea
Viola's are a bit larger than the violin in order to resonate it's lowest string, the C-String (C3), then it has the G-String(G3), the D-String(D4) and it's highest, the A-String(A4). Violin's also have the G, D and A-String, but the Violin's highest string is the E-String(E5). Violins have a thinner, sharper and more piercing sound while Viola's have a more thicker, richer and more somber sound.
@Luzura289 and this is the comment of the hurt ego of a violinist 💔💔 go practice
She plays beautifully, and on that viola is incredible

Watch out. Viola jokes incoming!
How do you know a viola player is at your door?
They can't find the key and don't know when to come in.
@@guccideltaco Bruh I don't want to laugh but it's true😂😢
Stop. these jokes are alread VIOLAting my human rights.
Brilliant observation!, technically I guess that's a no no but, I enjoyed the music anyway. That's right, in classical music the vibrato is frowned upon. Vibrato is like a Ferrarri, IF you play it it will get away from you. You must keep a harness on vibrato and use it tastefully. Otherwise it's like too much chocolate, it melts over everything.
next episode: Introducing the Baroque Synth
That would be a massive pipe organ 🤣.
Baroque ASMR
Viola gang two set
1:03 did she say on the bitch or bridge? I'm sure she meant the latter, but it sure did sound like the former lol
Better fix it if if is Baroque. LOL very interesting. My daughter is a violist.
It is pointless to mention a flatter neck angle without mentioning the wedged fingerboard, which causes the string angle over the bridge to be more or less equal to that on a modern setup.
She knows jack shit. Shes a modern player who can’t make a good sound on gut strings.
Who else got a heart attack when she threw the viola
Of you dont tune, this is your violin
Audiences in the Baroque era didn't have to fight automobiles and IPhones!
Yes, the full size violin is approx 4 inches smaller than the viola. Im not sure what size viola, mabe small, maybe large,, the basic thing you come away with here is this, the viola is better for a tall large man. Some petit women do play the viola, however the viola makes there head look tiny. ONE VIOLA CAN FILL A MULTPURPISE ROOM WITH LOUD SOUND. A VIOLIN COULD, BUT MUST HAVE EXTREMELY STICKY ROSIN TO DRIVE THE STRINGS. THAT BASICLY IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A VIOLA AND VIOLIN. OH AND ONE OTHER THING. A VIOLA HAS SHOULDERS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE STRING BOX. THATS HOW TO POSITIVELY IDENTIFY A VIOLA FROM A VIOLIN.
What does viola say?
This sounds like a baroque viola!
Like if u get the joke
Ludwig Van Beethoven lol
I don't get it
pretty sure it's baroque = broke.
@@azelmamortlake4471 oh I get it
It’s a two set reference
Actually, the baroque viola is more steep angle than the classic viola, not the opposite as you say. The reason for this is because gut strings can take much more tension than metal strings, but they also give less volume in the sound, so with more tension, there is a chance to get better volume.
I’m sure you understand you’ve got the nerve to correct a professional Baroque violist who is so good that she’s landed a job with one of the finest period orchestras on the planet. I trust that she knows what she’s talking about. Also, I’m not a violist, but I could instantly see what she was talking about.
@@voraciousreader3341 Is she a luthier too?
Is Katherine Hart still playing viola with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment?
But don't all violas sound "baroque"?
I'm not even going to bother scroll down, because I know most of the comments are going to be recycled Ling Ling/2set jokes that anyone could come up with.

00:54 - Seriously?? This person is convinced that a baroque viola is literally less heavy _because_ of the lower tension of its strings? Well... strictly speaking, because of Einstein's general-relativistic mass-energy equivalence, it _is_ true that a higher tension would result in a higher mass and hence weight... but... I mean... the energy given by the tension on a couple of strings on a viola would result in a _ridiculously small_ corresponding additional amount of mass! :D
She’s an idiot
She explains the instrument, but DOESN'T play it?
Hi Arianna, at 2:20 she plays a short excerpt from Bach's Brandenburg concerto No.6
And what I noticed is that the Baroque Viola has a chin rest when original period instruments DON'T have any chin rests.
how stupid do you have to be? first you don''t realize that she plays, then you dont notice that there is no chinrest?
Never mind! Some Baroque Instruments have Chin Rests and DON'T have Shoulder rests. Sorry about that.
I regret that I stopped playing viola. At least I can still read music after 15 years...
what's a viola? Is that like an off brand violin?
A VIOLA is a violin on steroids, there larger. Now quit asking that question, there are encyclopedias available!
She used vibrato on a baroque style song 🙁
Invalid Dylan its ok :)
And it sounded great
She’s basically a modern player - and not much idea of how to make a nice sound on gut strings
Yeah, I was gunna ask about that...
Can you explain what's wrong with this? It sounds nice to me, at least.
My god don't ever throw your instrument like that. Gave me a heart attack.
Baroque... Viola. Omfg can you get anymore irrelevant?!
jk pls don't strangle me with gut strings o.o
