Dacia Spring Review: Small, cheap, compromised
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- With a starting price of £15,000, the Dacia Spring could be just the kind of car to convert people to electric motoring. In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott tests the Spring in Extreme trim, and finds a car that certainly has some merit, but also carries a number of significant compromises. Question is, would you consider a Spring over a used EV of the same value?

What an excellent car. There is something quite joyous about the Spring. It looks great and for a lot of people, would be the perfect runabout. Finally a manufacturer has delivered on the promise of EVs, small, light and inexpensive to buy and run. Dacia is to be applauded in bringing this to market and I hope they are rewarded by strong sales, it's a fantastic car.
The Dacia Spring makes VW's decision to kill the e-Up off seem even more odd. The e-Up seemed better than the Spring.
Seemed.
Agreed. Just been through the buying process for a small EV and I went for a 3 year old e-Up! over a new Spring. It just feels better built and the way it rides and drives is like a car from the segment above. £4000 or more cheaper than a Spring too and think it will hold its value better
@@alangravy27 the Up! Was always a lovely car to drive I worked for VW when they were launched but unless you get a later TSI the engines were so extraordinarily weak they were almost dangerous. Electric seemed to be a solution to that.
We have had our Mk1 Spring for two years now (in France) it is a joy, we live very close to a motorway but only need to go short distances it drives well at 130 Kph (top speed) we are able to charge at home with a normal house plug, around 12 Hrs over night is great, we have not noticed any rise in our bills. Just took it for its second annual service which cost 81 Euros.
This is how EVs should have been launched to the public, ie a small cheap car that is ideal for the city. But nooooooooo, we got huge, outrageously priced stupid SUVs that did not meet the needs of people (poor range, long charging times and terrifying depreciation) and turned a lot of potential buyers away from EVs.
Zoe? e Up? Smart ForFour? Then the SUV craze took off but they did start with smaller cars
Smartforfour, you checked out the CCS charge options on that?
@ you yourself said city car how many cities are 40 miles wide to need ccs
@@Dreador. your eyes are playing tricks on you.
@@davidspencer7254 true they are sorry. Though just to cover I owned a smart forfour and totally fine upto 50 miles a day with home charging so CCS never came into picture
That this can charge from a 13A socket in 12 to 13 hours is a boon for those who have a garage with power but no possibility of a 7KW supply without a ton of digging up places to lay a high current armoured cable and possibly planning permission etc. For shorter daily journeys this may be fine without a visit to an expensive public charger. As for the 0 to 62? Well you can't really benefit from much better given roads roads with lorries/Horse Boxes/Tractors etc. The only bigger issue would be overtaking I guess. Manual handbrake, yes bring em back. Very well presented Vicky as always and thanks for sharing.
Can't all EVs charge from a 13A (16A) socket, using a granny charger?
I do like the honesty of this car, it's an honest run about for people who want their car to be a car and do what they need it to do and nothing more thats screen is great especiallyas it has wirless carplay andriod auto thats wat everyone uses anyway. It doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is.
Thanks for talking about the battery chemistry - Been trying to find this out for ages!
The Goddess of cars in cold weather with a toy EV. So grateful for that! What more could we ask for?
Really enjoyed this jolly presentation (with its rhetorical questions eg." Do I care? No").The facelifted Spring looks to be an affordable first car for the young suburbanite though I would worry about its range with A/C or heating on.
Nice simple car. Which shows that you don't need all the rubbish a lot of cars have these days.
We just signed our leasing contract and get the car in 3 weeks. Olive green with all extras for 160Euros a month plus 34 Euro injurance...PV on our roof will fill the "tank" best deal out there for us at the moment.
How did you get it that cheap?
@MrBlackspoon Dacia is giving 4000 Euro Discount at the moment. At least in germany as far as I know. I think they wanna counteract the import duty sanctions...
I think the battery chemistry is NMC, not LFP. The battery is made by Sunwoda and is labelled "Ternary" which suggests NMC. What is your source for reporting it as LFP? It matters because the recommended charging regimes are different for the two types. Otherwise, excellent review. Appreciated.
Would be good to confirm as cannot see it anywhere - LFP would be my preference but that’s maybe why it weighs under a tonne
Just the perfect affordable city roundabout ❤❤❤
Great video 😊
6:20 it does have AEB, even on the previous model
Looks good all down to whatever deal you can get as a second car charging by 3 pin plug it makes sense
Third mistake in under 3 minutes: the mirrors are not heated, not even as an option.
First mistake in under 1 minute: the Spring has NMC battery, not LFP
Second mistake in under 2 minutes: the Spring dows not have alloy wheels, not even as an option.
It's a perfectly good city car, unfortunately for not a lot more you can get a Citroen eC3, which is a proper car
I think the pre face lift version with the roof bars looked more balanced. It is a tiny car and parked beside other small cars like a Clio, it almost looks like a toy
Does look quite bouncy?
The 1 star NCAP rating was for the 2021 model, five minutes on the Dacia web site and you can see the 2024 model has the usual raft of safety systems found in other cars, pedestrian detection emergency breaking, lane keep assist, cruise control, speed sign recognition etc. Not very fair review to emphasis the safety aspects when the information provided by the reviewer is wrong. Have they updated the video?
My wife raised our first child driving around with her kia picanto. Small cars do work, go to the Netherlands and all you see are small cars.
Where did you conclude it has a LFP battery? Everywhere I look (even pictures of the battery pack) it said it has a cheap (non-cooled) NMC Ternary battery. Did they change the chemistry on the new model? I am curious then. Where did you get this info?
I've been looking for ages for this answer - Ideally I was hoping for LFP so it's less damaging to charge to 100% given the range on offer
@lewismcnicholas2631 all the previous models have a li-ion battery. I have my 2024 model delivered the 9th of january. Had an amazing deal. Pretty much paid 12k€ for the extreme after government subsidies and a big Dacia discount. And if the battery fails after the 8 years of warranty, then it wouldn't be a big cost, because it's a small one.
@@tjorven4124they are all lithium ion - it’s whether it’s NMC or LFP
Repeatedly charging to 100% with NMC will see faster battery degradation so while it might still be in warranty and above the threshold for replacement under warranty I wouldn’t want fewer than 100 miles real world to make it functional for my needs
@@lewismcnicholas2631 the ones I know of have an NMC cell. Ternary means NMC.
IMO, it's decent enough and compelling enough as long as you need a PCP deal and your main needs are for commuting and/or as a local runabout. If you're paying cash, you are far better off buying something a LOT better that's a few years old. Lots of used EVs for 15 grand or less, including higher mileage Tesla Model 3s.
Personally, if I were looking to buy an EV right now, I'd either pay circa 20k for a lowish mileage Model 3 Performance or 10k or so for a lowish mileage 1st gen MG 5. Of course, there are plenty of other used options, including several crossovers and even the MG 4.
And I'm not sure if you have kids or elderly parents to transport that you would live with such poor safety credentials for 15k. Sure, it's likely at least as safe as most 10yo cars, but most people aren't paying anywhere near 15k for a 10yo car.
I had a brief test drive and it feels just as cheap as you'd expect. I'm 6'1 and found that my eyeline was blocked by the roof which is a complete deal breaker. Anyway I've since put a deposit down on a Hyundai Inster which is very competitively priced here in Ireland albeit more expensive than the Spring.
Agree the Inster way nicer, but way more expensive too. Did you try the Citroen e-C3?
I'm also, 6' 1" it's fine for me
This is a lot more like it for EV’s, but just a bit too small and limited in range for me. However, if Dacia bring out a Sandero sized EV with a real 200 mile range (claimed 250) at between £15k to £20k, they will have a massive hit on their hands.
I’m 99% sure that’s exactly what they are working on now!
I like the look of it but would take a slightly used Zoe ZE50 over this. And my Ioniq 38 does 5-6 mpkwh all day so 4 isnt much cop.
You are spot on with your remarks its compromised design very welcome in the market though I would look at one as a used purchase 2nd vehicle for local journeys alongside a Seat Mii not sure which way I would go though.
I like the fact that the Spring is under £15k, it has its place. But a BEV Duster for £25k would be more use. Come on Dacia
The direct new comparison is the LeapMotor T03 both in size and price. Used, I think a VW e-UP! Is a better built package and has 3 star Euro NCAP rating too. Save yourself £4000+ too
The e-UP! had a 3* NCAP rating when it was tested. If it was tested to the current standards it'd probably get 1* as well.
@imbethondion4572 the e-Up test was 2019, the Spring test 2021. I'm not convinced that is enough time to explain the difference in score
@@bill_heywood There was a change in the testing standards in 2020 which gave a lot more weight to electronic driver aids, which cars like the e-UP! would fare poorly on due to being an older design. The test score these days has relatively little to do with crashworthiness.
have you tried the tires ?
Commenting on rear seat space in a car less than 4m long is surely redundant? Properly shoddy review this! Remember a manual handbrake?!! Ridiculous.
So it's a city only car, which given the congestion charges in London, would save you money
How dose the safety hold up against the fiat panda
Why do i like this
5 Star driving a 1 Star!❤
How long did car gurus wait to release this video?
It’s outdated when it now has better, as cheap competitors like the leap motor T03 and great pcps on other lower end stelantis products
Do agree on the PCP/company deals - on our scheme the Spring is as much as a base Citroen e-C3 and only about £40 and month cheaper than a Kona!
No spare tyre not good .
Are you sure about the battery . all my checking states its lithium - ion not lithium - phosphate which is a much better and safer battery type
cheap: Dacia Spring - worth the money: Leapmotor T03
Hello, this is the old model that received only 1 star. The 2024 model has emergency braking, pedestrian and bicycle, and should receive more stars

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Why not test the basic one, instead of the top of the range
It seems to be hard to get hold of a basic one to test - my local dealer's demonstrator was a top of the range car and the salesman said he'd never actually seen a base model in the metal.
@imbethondion4572 fair enough, possibly the base model is to basic, anyway thanks for your review 👍
None of the "Dacia Spring" models have " alloy wheels"
Dacia Spring has emergency braking (AEB), even the 1st generation has it. This one has also pedestrian detection. All of this is mandatory starting 2024 hence the reason you see this 2nd generation being introduced. Please correct the video statement, its misleading.
No DAB ? That's my deal breaker !
Leapmotor double the range almost
In terms of range, if you really want to, you can even take it to the Polar Circle, like this guy did, taking it from Romania to northen Finland:

Didn't know JK Rowling did car reviews 🙂
Seems like a brilliant little car and it's not a great compliment to driver assist features when the most important aspect is how easily they can be tuned off... And the hand brake ❤, yes, what happened to having proper hand brakes?
Only £10k in France
€18,900 for the base model in France, or £15,685 actually 😂
In France, does the gov. provide a subsidy for EVs for scrapping a used +7 yr-old car? In Spain the current subsidy+ (MOVES3) can reach 7,000 euros@@ziggarillo
💯
Slow little city car on price of mid size sedan... It is all but cheap! Dynamics is simply inadequate for 21 century...
Where can you buy a brand new mid range sedan for £15K?
So it’s awful. The Citroen eC3 is worth the extra money. The Leapmotor T03, which is a direct rival to this, is built much better as well.
NO Alloy wheels.......so many mistakes in this review....
Death trap. I would not drive to the shop in it. Let alone a motorway.

No one would accept an Internal Combustion car with a 10 litre fuel tank its utterly bizarre people find the equivalent in an EV acceptable.
But then in an ICE car you have to drive to a petrol station to fuel up, which I agree would be a pain every 100 miles (although I had to do it with my old Honda moped). Most Spring owners will just plug them into the mains at home before they go to bed and then unplug them the next morning, which is a lot less hassle. This isn't a car many people will buy to drive long distances in.
I’ll come back in 10 years when EVs are ready.
Let's hold you to that.😂
Mine's been absolutely fine for 3+ years.
it's not good value when you look at the size of the battery , its basically a rebadged Dongfeng EV EX1 Pro they start at $8-9K in China 🙄
Tell you what, you buy one, drive it back home and do all the paperwork. Do check back in with the costs (plus lhd conversion and warranty).
@@davidspencer7254 You saved me typing that....
Or you can buy T.03 in europe, which is a better car all around for a little bit more than the spring. Importing Chinese cars is just not viable.
When will these regimes learn the public don't want milk floats.
But they do 😂
@ziggarillo
I'd have thought a man like you woudent be making videos.
Well Mr, with the amount of "fun" I've had over the years with infernal combustion engines, I'm QUITE prepared to give a "milk float" a trial, so up yours Mr......Trump, I'm guessing .....
Leap Motor T03 is way better for the same money. The Spring was an Indian market only ICE car originally hence the inability to make it fundamentally safer as the base structure is designed for price not safety. This car should not be for sale in the UK or Europe in my opinion. Terrible car and an illusion of value.
Or, get a low miles BMW i3 which is much better in every way
Not sure I’d class bigger bills as better tbh
😂
But it's a milk float.
Rubbish
