  • Wild Turkey males, called toms, compete for females by strutting around a hen to impress her.
    Toms erect and fan their tails, drag their primary (flight) feathers along the ground, and gobble. Once the female choses her mate, she crouches on the ground. The victorious tom struts a little more and the other toms yield.
    The victorious tom mounts the hen and treads on her back. To me, it looks like he’s giving her a massage.
    They copulate, the female runs off, shakes herself and preens and then it’s up to her to raise her family.
    I saw these Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in West Sacramento, California, USA on 16 March 2024.
