The "tuning fork assembly" is designed to hold a technical pen. Swivel this assembly so the pen nib is perpendicular to the paper. Although this is a very old design, I prefer this type of compass to all the new stuff (after CAD replaced mechanical drafting).
That was most useful thanks. I had been looking at one for sale, but didn't buy it yet because I didn't know about the pencil holder. The one I'm looking at does not have the pencil holder, but the seller also has a drop compass which does have the pencil holder. It is the newer model with the red ring and I also noticed that the bars around the needle holder pivot looks thicker than the older model. Very cool compass.
I think this was the only compass Haff made for Rotring. Most of the other chromed compasses were made by Riefler. Riefler probably made Matt plated ones but I would think other manufacturers as well would chip in. For sure you needle shoe is worn, not a design defect. My opinion on old vs new, getting the one that has the least use is the best. I’ve had issues with old and new and you just never know. I do like the needle shoes ones and the large adjustment nut is pretty great. The only ones are a little classier too.
I feel slightly bad that I keep giving out bad information requiring your corrections. Maybe from now on I’ll just stick to making direct empirical observations and refrain from history. I think you’re right about the needle shoe just being worn, because I have two others that have excellent holding power.
@@jasonbrentpresley you should keep giving out what you know and then there is more fun things to discuss. You can try switching needles shoes from some of your other compasses to see if that helps. Clearly you will want to give preference to this system Haff compass due to it's awesomeness.

It’s amazing how little that compass changed over 50 years. The 2mm clutch in these really old ones will also fit in the dropbow compass. Nice pickup.
