What a beautiful interview. Thank you both for sharing with us. Bill Porter/Red Pine has been a huge inspiration in my life, over recent years especially. Really, Thank You for Shining In This Dark Age. Love, Bruno.
It is gratifying to hear more from Bill, I adore his translations and commentary. They have been such immensely helpful guides. Sincerely, thank you for all that you do. 🙏
@@hear-and-know well, Road to Heaven is what he became known for, but Zen Baggage is actually a much better written and more all encompassing book, I love that one. He mentions some of the shorter ones here that started as radio programs-I’ve read them all. I had already lived in China when I encountered Zen Baggage shortly after its publication, but it’s part of what inspired me to give it another shot and go and live in Taiwan like Bill did, which I did, a couple years later.
Thank you for posting this! I have recently done some grad work on Ezra Pound and I had no idea Red Pine was interested in him. I have since found out that he has a book on the poet entitled "Cathay Revisited." I cant wait to see what Bill made of Pound's dubious translations ;)
bought several copies of Red Pine's 2021 'Zen Roots - the first thousand years', a nice compilation for zen study classes, I wonder if the late Thomas Cleary and Red Pine ever dialogued? That would be interesting.
Sutras were tranlated because of money, contract, deadline, ... that part really sounds like Buddhism. Sutras and teaching came because ordinary people didn’t know and needed that. Lol, it’s amusing to remind, and I’m glad that it happend to Red Pine just naturally.
Via Wikipedia: A rakusu (絡子) is a traditionally Japanese garment worn around the neck of Zen Buddhists who have taken the precepts ... The rakusu represents the garments that the Buddha put together to wear after he left his palace to seek enlightenment. According to Buddhist scripture, Siddhārtha left the palace where he was a prince, and collected rags from trash heaps, funeral pyres, and various other places. He then cleaned the rags by rubbing them in saffron, which gave his robes an orange-golden appearance.
What a beautiful interview! (Bloody words! Where is my poetic heart in this response?) 💐

I love Red Pine’s humility and his understanding.
So honest being, blessed
