Will this plastic tub work as a dust separator?

- What a journey! This video has footage spanning more than a year and encompasses the evolution of my dust collection system. First, Rockler makes amazing products. Second, as you can see at the end the tub actually works pretty well! Third, I still need to figure out something for the hose I let me know what I should do. Check out the links below!!

Thanks for the shout-out! This turned out pretty great! I liked that you worked smarter not harder....I often catch myself on my tippy toes, on a ladder, balancing on a yoga ball, trying to do things before realizing I did it the absolute most difficult way possible.
That is me in a nutshell
I have never seen anyone use a tub. I would have assumed a cyclone could not be created within a square container but it appears to work well enough. The best thing is the brilliant use of limited space! Nice video!
Thanks Richard and Judy!! Appreciate the kind comments.
Nice use of space! I used the same pipes and I love the blue hose from rockler! The 4 in vacuum in the dust right system has been a game changer in my shop clean up process! Great work!
Thanks so much!! Yeah I agree Rockler makes such nice stuff!
Enjoyed how you made good utilization of space. Dust collection process seems simplified now. Thanks for your elaborate and thoughtful video.
Nice use of space - impressed how well that suction holds up with so long to travel through a large diameter tube
Yeah it’s amazing. But, when the diameter goes down like for my sander or whatever, it’s not more suction, just the same amount but through a smaller opening. I don’t know, science I guess.
Looks like it’s going to work well!
Thanks man! It’ll do!
You made a nice set up. I like your subtle humor in the video. I will look into that Rikon.
Ha, thanks so much and thanks for watching!
Great video! A good dust collector is definitely something on the wishlist for us. Sounds like the Rykon may be a good candidate.
Thanks for watching! If I had to do over I would probably go with dust right from Rockler and just buy it as a package. In this case I had a gift card to woodcraft so you know how that goes.

Love how u pointed out the mortal sin of mixing woodcraft and rockler lol for shame lol great video I’m surprised the square separator worked as well as it did I always thought in order for it to be effective it had to be a cylinder but I’m glad u showed it off thanks man!
Haha thanks so much man!! Yeah so glad they were compatible bc this Rockler stuff is NICE!
@@RLLWoodworks yea I have some stuff from them and the quality is great
Interesting. The term you were looking for: hose clamp. A relatively shallow bin such as this, will need to be emptied frequently. A full bin means that a lot of chips and dust particles get to the filter, or even past it - which kind of negates the point of having a dust collector or dust separator.
Right thanks! Ideally I’ll empty it before it gets full to avoid that problem but we’ll see! Definitely not perfect but I think it’s better than nothing.
@@RLLWoodworks Some experts report that performance declines when a dust separator gets more than on third full. You are on the right track. It’s a learning process. Best wishes!
cool setup, seems to work great. 👍
Thanks Lukas!! 🙏🏻
I would put shelf brackets (spaced wider than the bin) on the wall with a board for the shelf to replace the 'platform shelf thing' you have now (not knocking it, just don't know what to call it). Attach the lid to the wall and it will be fairly painless. Will make it easy to slide the shelf out and drop the bin straight down.
I love it thanks for the thoughts!! I def need to do something.
great to see - great minds think alike! I wanted an extremely low profile cyclone so that my Festool CT26 could fit under my workbench with a separator - I basically have a Dustopper from HD on top of a rectangular box and just like you, found that it works perfectly well! Is it optimal? Maybe not - but it fits exactly where I want, it's a clean solution, and it's really easy to empty - and prevents me from having to fill and replace those expensive festool bags. Long live rectangular separators! :D
Interesting 👍
You could sand down the little raised plastic feet under the platic box
That’s a good idea thanks!
Hmm, a Wild and Crazy Guy ... mixing up the Rock and Wood stuff together !! We all know the whole is greater than the sum of the parts ? I'd say this is a big Success Rory - Good MIL eh ? -Mike
p.s. a good manicure once every few months is such a small price. hehe
Haha thanks Mike!! Good thing I keep my nails short!
👌👌👌
It appears that the bag beneath your filter/blower assembly takes up a good bit of space. How about getting another clear bin & attaching the lid with a large hole in it to the underside of the filter. That way you would not have to manipulate the clamp to empty the dust collection bag.
Wow that’s a great idea. I may do that next time I get the itch to rearrange things. Thanks!
I love how you say you don't have enough room for a cylinder and then put it in a spot that totally could have fit a cylinder 😂😂
Haha I know right?! It’s more so because of the garage door rail messing everything up. I didn’t really explain that tho did I?
@@RLLWoodworks you might have, but I'm not convinced😂
Очень интересное решение. Спасибо!
Nice project, wondering if this is not creating static electricity and in some situation can create electric sparkles and fire. Have you got any grounding to that blue pipe and dust collector? im not an expert but pls think about safety first. best regards from Poland R.
Thanks for asking! I got a lot of that same question on Facebook. From what I researched, shop fires started via static are extremely rare and very little documentation can be found on them. However, I would rather be safe than sorry and will be adding a grounding wire.
All the shops I’ve worked at had ginormous industrial dust collectors the everything went into. What is the idea behind separating big chips from the fine stuff? Seems like an unnecessary extra step? Is it something to prevent clogging?
That dust right thing is way better then the cloth bag my little delta collector came with.
🤙
Ideally it would be easier to empty and prolong the life of the filter and stop the impeller blade getting hit with big chunks. Not necessarily the case with out mine is set up. The thing is a pain to empty 😂
I'm disappointed. I was anticipating mr woodworks to drop the dust bin, you really made use of every corner.
I’ll try to do better next time!
You know it's coming, so here goes: This entire project absolutely sucks.
