That's honestly amazing achievement, and thanks for providing your insight. Getting that first paycheck from UA-cam is one of my favorite memories. I still remember it, there was lots of emotions involved. If it wasn't for my consistency and hard work (and a little bit of Famester of course), I probably wouldn't have made anything.
Katie! You have just explained profit breakdown AND taxes better than 99% of the accountants I have dealt with (there have been many...) over my career. The business owners I have worked with are so overwhelmed and confused by their numbers (often because of said accountants), so huge kudos to you for being so confident with financials. For me, when I look at a business owners future success, knowing this information at the level you do = long term success in any business.
I make $0 and yet I create content pretty regularly, I don't even care anymore as I realized that this chasing profits obsession was forcing creativity and that made it more like a real job. I just want to have fun with content creation, that is more valuable to me than anything else. In my older age, I find more value in relaxation and fun than I do in turning a profit. I got off of the treadmill...
As someone who recently got monetized that’s a great approach. People can tell if you’re in it for the money and you’re making stuff just so that you can get views. People generally don’t like desperation like to watch they like to watch. I got monetized from a few videos, taking off and getting thousands of views. The algorithm will do its job and you do yours.
These are the type of creators that I’ll always want to support. Humble, intelligent and grateful. Thank you Katie for your tips and transparency, you are helping TONS of us out there 💗💗
I'm SO thankful you covered the whole stream of finances! NO ONE does that and it's SO refreshing as someone who is working on building her own business.
I always value your transparency. I have no plans on being on social media full-time, but this was definitely inspirational for me as I'm currently self-employed as a copywriter! ❤ Sending love from Jamaica
This is the first piece of your content I've ever seen and I'm totally awestruck by your honesty, intelligence and prudence. Not to mention the clarity with which you presented the information. I have no plans to be a content creator but this video (especially the end) should be viewed by EVERY young person today. The wisdom and the gratitude - secret sauce for life. I don't need to wish you success because your values and mindset has got that covered no matter which way the wind blows. Love from your Commonwealth cousin 🇦🇺
I completely resonate with what you said at the end there! just bought a 400 square ft house with a 2012 car and trying to travel as cheap as I can so I can go as often as possible. Huge respect for you choosing to live this way too, whenever I try to explain this to people a lot don't understand ❤
Love how open you are about this - it's proper view of creator income. Also that you are so very grounded and taking such a sustainable view. Smart lady Katie
So my question would be are you saving/investing for retirement within that personal salary, or does that come out of the business profit as well? For me, I was able to start saving for retirement via a SEP IRA last year (idk if it's different in Canada) and that's really been awesome to reduce my taxable income in the business, and not have it come out of my personal salary (which like you is around 50k US). I also have an S-corp structure which oh my god has saved me so much money on taxes. Freelancers really need to know this stuff, thanks for sharing!
Hi Katie! My mother would love you, she’s Canadian too and just loves saving money. I think you’re great, very happy to have come across you. My channel is teeny tiny (only 6.5k subscribers) but I am growing fast thanks to my beautiful community who are so supportive. UA-cam is a wild ride and when you have a really weird and unusual gift it’s exactly what you need. I’ll be sure to keep my notifications on. Thank you dear ❤
Thank you Katie! I’m happy to see you explaining this, as so many people think we entrepreneurs and content creators make sooo much money out of “nothing” and it is, as you said, because we often talk about revenue only. When I started my business 24 years ago I made 78k€ but paid for myself 12k€ a year. So many people were thinking I was so wealthy and I could barely make my ends meet. It’s so important to explain transparently what is the truth.
Super great video! I’d love to learn how you went about hiring a team and outsourcing. Maybe a new video idea 😉 This was the first video of yours I came across and I definitely subbed 🤠
Shes cant give a full picture until 2024 is over. Any numbers right now would be an incomplete statement as the rest of the year hasn’t happened yet. But an updated video would be nice.
That was awesome! Thank you for sharing! I don’t think I want to be a creator “full time” because I’m nearing retirement age but it is still so cool to see the reality of all that goes into it. I truly appreciate your honesty and transparency. 👍🏼 And think you’ve accomplished a LOT! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you for your transparency! I really appreciate your candor. I wanted to say though that no one ever talks about taxes!! for someone who has 10k subs on my other account, i always get emails asking to gift me stuff but for no pay but they want a video.. i suppose its worth incurring the gifting tax if its something cool like a pelaton but where is the logistical line? i wish more creators would talk about the tax implications (no matter the state or country) of receiving gifts with instructions or just straight PR over $25 and what they recommend. Thanks again.
It sounds like you are either loosing money or you are barely breaking even on your Creatorly Media business. Unless you improve margins, maybe you should dump that side of the business. What do you think?
Thank soo mcuh for this video❤ it was soo interesting to see the process from profit to the money that you actually take home and the end of the year. It's also refreshing seeing some saying "i have more than enough", i don't need more money to be happy. Also quick note: i really enjoy the change of camera angle and background. It really kept myself focus on what you were saying😊
As I’m considering the potential for starting a business, this is hugely valuable. Thank you for your transparency and breaking everything down; I learned a lot!
Love your transparency and the fact that you HAVEN'T changed when your income did. This is soooo amazing. So many creators in your niche change when they get more $$$$ and I love that you keep it simple and it's so relatable!
Incredible video! Thanks for all the reminders and open transparent information! I'm just getting started on UA-cam and am on the road to FIRE. Happy travels, hope you're having advventures!
I'm always curious how much creators pay themselves as a salary from their business. What made you decide on the $75,000 amount? How will you deal with giving yourself raise increases in the future? In the US, you can pay yourself additionally, outside of a salary wage, an "owner's draw" or "distribution" (depending on if you're a sole proprietor or a corporation) and it's taxed differently. Not sure if Canada has something similar.
I just began to profit off of my channel. I made content for seven years before. I finally reached the stats I needed to monetize. However, I mostly create on shorts so my revenue is low, $10-$20 dollars in a normal month, only recently made enough money to take out and I’m still waiting for my first payment this month. However, I’m still happy because I enjoyed doing content creation either way and now I can start to make something from it. However I’m trying to focus on longform now more because most of my videos are videos and I’ve been quite flopping recently having multiple videos with no likes to at least a few dozen and a few thousand views a few hours after posting. I hope to make it big day and I’m currently working towards my silver plaque (5% there).
You nailed it. Forming a Corp doesn't necessarily save as there are additional costs and headaches, but it allows one to postpone income for down the road. You can also use Net Income After Tax from your biz financials to qualify for more financing. A sole proprietor generally writes their income down to to the floor, and thus most often times needs alternative financing. Great video and breakdown!
I am new to UA-cam. I’m just a baby beginner. Can you do a video on what an average good price is to charge a brand is? Example: a Walmart haul. This would be a world of help. Thank you for putting out great videos.
I admire your transparency! I've been thinking about making a breakdown video for my business, and months later, I'm still thinking... but you've just helped me get one big step closer. Good luck with your business!
Katie - Quick question - is the UA-cam channel considered part of your business even if it’s in your name? Does that make you liable for anything? ? I’m asking before I set mine up.
Great video and great content. Out of the many things I could have commented on, this is what struck me the most, aside from the previously mentioned high-quality of your product, and that is the home you mentioned. Location, location, location, for sure, but wow at the difference in prices per location. I'm in a smallish city, 40k in city limits, 125k metro population when you combine the periphery cities and those "across the river" that would all probably be one city if not for geography, politics, and historical racism/bigotry impacts. Anyways, my point is that I am 6 blocks from a small (approx 20 block grid) but vibrant downtown 'urban center' where I work as web developer for a university, and which contains all the shopping, dining, entertainment options that I require, residing in a 1200 sqft (2k if includes basement workshop / garage / finished gameroom) with a classic mid-century modern vibe, in immaculate condition that I paid $100k us for (worth $175k 3 years later, so maybe timing is as important as location) but I just found it interesting and wanted to add a long comment and like your video since that seems to be good for the 'al gore rhythm'.
Fascinating video. Thanks for your candid-ness (…is that a word?) it’s inspiring to understand how it can be done. 👍🏻 (How about: ‘candidity’? I like it! 🎉)
Thank you Katie for this video. As a new creator, you truly inspire me, that at some point maybe, yt can become my full time job. Since, I really trust your opinion, I wanted to ask you this. I'm Greek, living in Greece and when I was creating videos in English, they were getting very little views. When I switched to Greek, the channel started to grow and the videos performed so much better. At the moment, in Greece, I do not see any brands sponsoring yt videos (not sure why). Greek Brands seem to be focused on greek instagramers. I'm a bit perplexed, If I should continue making videos in Greek or switch back to English. Any opinions?
New subscriber 😊 Being successful in this way frightens me. I love your content and visual aids. You speak clearly and slowly. I love your plan and forward thinking. Cheers to your success and may you double your business profits this year. 😊❤
Yes the breakdown on taxes is HUGE! I keep a lot of my money within my business accounts for the same reason you spoke about. You are so top tier Katie.😉
Very helpful!! I’m an LLC in the USA. Thinking of investing a small amount in real estate in France via my business profits. It’s important to live below your means but also to invest in businesses that generate cash flow. I’m also a KDP publisher earning a bit as a side gig.
Truly a great informative video covering all aspects in a simple & understandable way. I'm sort of blown away by your transparency 🥳I'm wondering was your van covered by company expenses too? Thank you for your massive efforts 👍
So comprehensive! Really appreciate this. A lot of people don't talk about expenses and taxes and they are sooo important. Part-time vanlife is my dream too. :D
I started creating content and developing my social media accounts in January 2024 as a labor of love. So far I haven't even reached 100 subscribers. I am not giving up because my goal wasn't money motivated, but it is disappointing to not grow here.
I really appreciate the breakdown and transparency of the money side of things. It puts clarity on the financial expectations for new UA-camrs like me, which helps me keep realistic goals. Thank you so much!
Wow! This is one of the best videos I've actually seen about this. Thank you for posting it. I'm playing in the space but I never really dedicated myself. Partially because my real-time job is as a producer for commercials and that can take up a lot of time and then I lose motivation after a large shoot. But thank you for posting. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you
I've been watching you for years on and off and never subscribed until now. This video gave me so many ideas on how to scale my own business as a content creator so thank you for that! Sending love xx
Thank you for all your transparency! It has been hugely beneficial...as a small business owner, I am curious to know at what revenue mark did you decide to incorporate so you were no longer being taxed at the personal level. Thank you!!
Katie, this is amazing. SO much insight and wisdom. Nice to hear the breakdown from a Canadian creator. Love your out look of "more than enough". Well done on your success. This encourages me as I consider future ideas for transformation of my career.
Love, love, love this video! You are an inspiration and so fun to listen to and follow through your journey. I'm so glad I found your channel. Thank you!
I absolutely loved this video! Thank you for the transparency. I am almost a year and a half into my Kids UA-cam channel. I'm about a year into making money. Your channel is extremely informative for someone like me who knows absolutely nobody that is also a UA-camr making money. ❤️
Thank you for being so transparent. I thought I'd listen to this episode in the background, but was totally drawn in from beginning to end. You shared such useful information, and as a Canadian, I appreciate your take on taxes and investments.
Thank you for tbe video. It is really helpful. It takes about a year for the most of new UA-camrs to monetize their channels. I am also wondering about statt-up cost on your UA-cam channel and what it looked like in your case.
I absolutely love your content and thanks so much for the transparency! I didn't realize you were Canadian so that actually helped me a bunch, too! I'm already a sole proprietor, but that means that my legal name is attached to my business... Do you still recommend incorporation in those cases? 👀
12:56 wait so how does the government know if you just spend your business money like how come you gotta pay yourself and how come you can’t just use it like that
Thank you for this! I'm growing a music production / tutoring business and this was very insightful and the lesson at the end was very good and something I hope to keep in my mind as things grow :)
This is so great Katie!! 👏🏼 Thank you for sharing and I think SOOOOO many people need to hear the wisdom of your mindset and not making money then spending every penny
Great info Katie! I like the presentation with graphic, as a visual person it’s easier to understand. But the Canadian part was a bit too fast 🤣I couldn’t understand what you were saying. 😉
Great video! Many business owners use their business account for frivilous personal things and then struggle making payroll. I love your smart tactical approach to keeping your business fluid and stable. Well done!
Thanks for sharing the breakdown! People love to toss around net revenue to look impressive but the reality is that your profit margins are the most important part of your business model. I am making significantly less revenue now but my profit margins have increased so my take home is actually better 😅🙌🏽
This was so great. I recently stopped following a content creator because of her wild spending habits and disconnect with how many people actually live. Your content is relatable and open and I appreciate that so much. ❤
Im just dreaming to get there! Im just trying to get monetized and started recently to try to be consistent. Its very helpfull to see ur expenses too and the different sources of income. Thank you so much!
Hey Katie , very good video . I can do better editing in your videos which can help you to get more engagement in your videos . Pls lmk what do you think ?
That's honestly amazing achievement, and thanks for providing your insight. Getting that first paycheck from UA-cam is one of my favorite memories. I still remember it, there was lots of emotions involved. If it wasn't for my consistency and hard work (and a little bit of Famester of course), I probably wouldn't have made anything.
Thanks for the transparency, it’s nice to finally see someone talking about net profit and not just gross income 👏

Same here. Creation more to help busy ppl to cook and bake is my mission!!!
I have the same story. I stopped making videos regularly but I do know I should continue.

This was the first video of yours I came across and I definitely subbed 🤠
Such great info, and PLEASE do a meet up in Kitchener!!! I would love that!

What a fantastic video on so many levels!! Thank you for this clear and transparent content. Looking forward to following you for more! ☺️
I love this transparency and realness!! Thank you for these tips ❤

Fantastic, a true bricks n mortar business would have to give both on a balance sheet so good to see someone being totally transparent! ❤
To be fair, UA-camrs also have to give all the information.
But literally none of them are required to do so on a UA-cam video.
I just began to profit off of my channel. I made content for seven years before. I finally reached the stats I needed to monetize. However, I mostly create on shorts so my revenue is low, $10-$20 dollars in a normal month, only recently made enough money to take out and I’m still waiting for my first payment this month. At 7:46, you say your “profit” was $427,075. You meant to say “revenue” was $427,075
You nailed it. Forming a Corp doesn't necessarily save as there are additional costs and headaches, but it allows one to postpone income for down the road. You can also use Net Income After Tax from your biz financials to qualify for more financing. How much does UA-cam generally tax because I’ll be receiving my first payment soon and I’m curious about how much they gonna take out of it

Spot on Katie. Living below your means is a fantastic way to go. Great video. ❤
Thank you Katie. Really appreciate your honesty. I'm just starting out on my youtube journey and your insights are so so valuable.
Wow I just found you today but I think I already love you. Thanks for sharing!! It’s so impressive the way you manage your money! 👏🏼
Great video and great content. Out of the many things I could have commented on, this is what struck me the most, aside from the previously mentioned high-quality of your product, and that is the home you mentioned. Yup SE taxes are brutal. Gig work, CC, contractor, all just self-employed and you will be milked.
Whoa. My respect for you has only grown from this video. Level headed and financially sound. Wish you the best in future success.
Fascinating video. Thanks for your candid-ness (…is that a word?) it’s inspiring to understand how it can be done. 👍🏻

Amazing video, Katie! I'm Canadian so I understood your blurb😅 thanks for sharing, love that you were so transparent!!
Katie, would you share how to jump from working solo to actually being able to have enough money to pay 1 and more salaries? Thank you!
Super smart strategy and great to hear someone online share how they are living below their means and planning for the future! Awesome job!!!
Thank you for being so transparent. I thought I'd listen to this episode in the background, but was totally drawn in from beginning to end. You shared such useful information, and as a Canadian, I appreciate your take on taxes and investments.
If only government was this transparent. Thanks for the break-down so so helpful.
Thank you for tbe video. It is really helpful. It takes about a year for the most of new UA-camrs to monetize their channels. I am also wondering about statt-up cost on your UA-cam channel and what it looked like in your case.
this was such a cute video for a financial video! very you, love it. Thank you for sharing with us. Very helpful
I absolutely love your content and thanks so much for the transparency! I didn't realize you were Canadian so that actually helped me a bunch, too! I'm already a sole proprietor, but that means that my legal name is attached to my business... Do you still recommend incorporation in those cases? 👀
Great video. Im a bit confused by the creatively business. Is that making money?
When would you recommend to make it a LLC? Did you wait till you got to a certain amount of subscribers?
12:56 wait so how does the government know if you just spend your business money like how come you gotta pay yourself and how come you can’t just use it like that
Commenting because this Canadian appreciated this video, and hopes my comment increases your reach!
Thank you for this! I'm growing a music production / tutoring business and this was very insightful and the lesson at the end was very good and something I hope to keep in my mind as things grow :)
So looking for some advice,if you're starting out from scratch how could we get the money for the expenses?
I really enjoy your videos and your personality! I recently bought and live in a 30' travel trailer. I love it! Your van is beautiful.
Well done!
This was such a great break down 🙏🏾
Wow! What an honest and valuable Video! Thank you so much! ☺️☀️
I love your channel and have been watching your growth!! Inspiring ❤
Thanks for sharing the breakdown! People love to toss around net revenue to look impressive but the reality is that your profit margins are the most important part of your business model. I am making significantly less revenue now but my profit margins have increased so my take home is actually better 😅🙌🏽
Good on you, what a grounded approach you have to life. All the best with the business!
Looks like you paid your staff before taxes were taken out, but yourself after? Why not have ALL salaries taken out before taxes?
This was so great. I recently stopped following a content creator because of her wild spending habits and disconnect with how many people actually live. Your content is relatable and open and I appreciate that so much. ❤
Im just dreaming to get there! Im just trying to get monetized and started recently to try to be consistent. Its very helpfull to see ur expenses too and the different sources of income. Thank you so much!
Hey Katie , very good video . I can do better editing in your videos which can help you to get more engagement in your videos . Pls lmk what do you think ?
