The reason it is called "Fish Tea" is because in the old days (40's-60's) Jamaican dance hall's were very different. It was a gathering place where the people actually wore suits and long dresses. They served food there too. Fish tea was the appetizer in the beginning of the dance and it was served in tea cups hence the name Fish "Tea".

That fish tea looked delish. Yum. Thanks Matthew. BTW, it's called fish tea because its a light version of a soup. It's like a broth, without too many heavy food ingredients. Plus sometimes some people would just strain it and drink only the liquid, hence tea. Last note, they say the Dr fish has a lot of healing qualities for our body, and is very good health wise. That's why it's called Doctor fish.

Hurricane Gilbert was in 1988, i was 6 years old. I remember not understanding the levity of it, just all my family and a few neighbours stayed at my grandmas houses as it was cement and newly built. I had fun! but days after walking around you started to realize the damage, i remember having to walk to get oil of water to fill my grandmas water tank bc the water system was tainted from the storm. Ah memoriessss...

I made some fish tea in the Orange Hill with a man called Mikey Rasta. Caught the fish out of the ocean, went back and hooked it up!!! One of the best experiences of my life.

That looks delicious Ras Kitchen. It's funny, the people of Brooklyn NY always called it fish soup. Regardless on what you call it, it looks very good.
