- The only known sound film footage of tenor Tino Pattiera from Dresden State Opera. Pattiera sings two songs ftrom feature film "Fra Diavolo" which was produced in 1931. Music by Dr. Giuseppe Becce and lyrics by Hedy Knorr. Unfortunately the film does not contain any aria from Auber's opera which is used here only as illustrative music

Very moving to see this. As commented below, a fabulous find, and a thousand thanks for uploading. Thought is also interesting that he would have been really singing, not mouthing to a playback.
FamilyCompactTheGrange As custom in these early talkie days the singing was live in studio during the film shooting with the orchestra sitting somewhere apart from the scene.
If you have been able to upload the clips of singing, do you happen to have the entire film available to upload, or is this a wish too far?
Another thing I notice is that at the age of 41, his voice is still full of its usual vibrato, and doesn't seem to have "dried out" as can happen with tenors as they get older.

Well, i don't know what you can see, but the version I can see is 1 hour and 16 minutes long, and I have just watched it!! If I had a email address for you, I could send you a screen print.
The complete movie is now listed as “private”.
Since this is 1931, it is Pattiera singing “live”. It is not lip-synced.
The other thought that strikes me (not an expert on vocal technique) is that this feels to me as if it gives the lie to the oft-repeated criticism that he was "throaty". To me he seems to be putting his voice quite forward into the mask. Another common criticism is that he forced, but one wants to get into his head to find out why - perhaps he simply gave his all to his public? Also, despite middle age, he is a bit prettier to watch singing than his friend Richard Tauber "Castor & Pollux"! Note his many very good contemporary reviews.
