I feel like it is becoming less of a stereotype as mental health and disorder awareness is growing. It's nice to see people relate to Patty than feel objectified by her characterization. It's comforting and empowering, especially with her learning to stand up for herself.
But usually with MPDG only the guy learns and changes and evolves into someone happier. In this movie it seems like they both give each other something and grow together

I remember when Patty was about to start singing I got super nervous because I liked the movie so far and was scared that the song might not be so great. Turned out it was so good I cried together with Simon 😭😭 I stumbled upon this movie on accident like 2 years ago and remembered you talking about it so I gave it a try. Almost turned it off after 10 minutes but i pushed through because you said sticking it out is worth it. And it really was, this is one of my favorite movies ever. Also the arcade date montage with Mac DeMarco’s song is just perfection, the way Simon looks at Patty and how he smiles seeing her this happy is so adorable, I could watch that on repeat forever..

I did watch it because you recommended it four years ago when it finally came to Hulu, but I gave up midway through because it WAS so abrasive. But I paused this video, watched it, and then came back. Worth it!
I heard the song on TikTok and I fell in love with it. I watched the movie and really connected to it when Kyle and Yancey started their adventure and he helps her get revenge on her bullies. This movie screams to my teenager self because I wish something like that happened to me. Kyle’s character has he’s flaws but the way he looks at her when she’s singing gets makes me cry every time.
Unironically, I only found out about this movie because I saw an out of context clip of the “Do you think I’m cool?” Clip on Instagram reels. Even as a Kyle Gallner fan I somehow never knew about this film, so I went to watch it (because DUH KYLE GALLNER ROMCOM???) and was so utterly moved and enchanted by it. In my Letterboxd review I called it cringe but in a horribly relatable and human way, like “god I’ve had interactions and experiences like that before” kind of way. The whole resurgence combined with DIA coming back to theaters due to the sheer demand alone is such a cool thing to see and it deserves all the praise and attention it’s getting in spades!!!!

I threw this movie on my watch list a couple of months back going through your festival videos looking for possibly interesting movies to watch. I gotta admit that the beginning almost threw me off, because of how much of an asshat and how destructive he is, but it turned into this charming sweet thing between two outcasts. And the song burned itself into my mind. I really like the ending, consequences and growth.
i have really terrible attention but have always loved movies. your videos are how i get to experience a lot of things i wouldn't normally be able to. this is the first one of your videos that made me stop a 1/4 of the way in and start watching myself. i have never been so intrigued by a plot and cast of characters like this before. hopefully i'll be back after i finish, but man i'm stoked.

I like that the weird girl is actually weird and not just cute and quirky, and I like that she's not conventionally attractive. I like that he is actually kind of an asshole and not just misunderstood and edgy. I hope there's a sequel of some sort someday.

The dog camera dance scene was actually with simon’s ex named val. the huge turkey in the beginning of the movie was rancid when simon threw it at the guy because they were filming over two days. emily’s favorite dinner in america is beef stew heheheh and i got a picture with her it was so cool!!

I remember watching this in its UK festival run thanks to coming out during that time when festivals were online. I remember not liking the first half and liking the second much more. Now I’ve come to appreciate Kyle Gallner a lot more (this was the first role of his I’d seen at the time), I’d like to revisit it again and see if my opinion on it has changed at all.
I am still in my punk/ rebellious phase, and I just watched it a couple of days ago. It is definitely already in my top ten romances, if not the top ten movies of all time. So if you are thinking of watching it I say do it.
I watched this movie through the Nightstream Film Festival during the pandemic, one of the few non-horror films they showed that year and easily one of the best films in the whole lineup. It damn well deserves to finally get its due! It's like a "manic pixie dream girl" romantic comedy with the genders reversed, way more cursing, and a lot more depth and humanity than such movies usually have. It was also just a gut-bustingly hilarious movie on top of it.

Usually when an original song sequence happens in a movie I brace myself to cringe and crawl out of my skin, so imagine my joy when I first saw this and the song was actually really really good

I've had a crush on Kyle Gallner for about two decades. I still haven't sat down to watch this despite knowing about it since it came out. I definitely need to soon.
I went to the frida cinema showing with the q&a with adam and emily showed up and surprised us she was actually in the audience the whole time watching with us it was so cool. The dog camera dance scene was actually with simon’s ex named val. the huge turkey in the beginning of the movie was rancid when simon threw it at the guy because they were filming over two days. emily’s favorite dinner in america is beef stew heheheh and i got a picture with her it was so cool!!
I actually watched this movie yesterday because you recommended it and I actually thought it was really cute
First half was really funny but then the second half felt like an like a idol x fan fanfic where main girl is not like the other girls but she’s like really good at singing and the main guy see something in her that no one else can I still absolutely adore this movie and it’s characters because they have a lot of chemistry but that was a funny thought that came across my head when watching it
Overall it was an enjoyable watch and I can’t get the song out of my head because it’s so catchy 😭✨
i was part of the bay area punk scene in high school and kinda slowly fell off it my first year of college (started going to the gym and got too tired to go- that and i got tired of scene drama and people getting canceled all the time) i barely go to shows now but this kinda made me want to get back into it.

I remember watching this in its UK festival run thanks to coming out during that time when festivals were online. I remember not liking the first half and liking the second much more. Now I’ve come to appreciate Kyle Gallner a lot more (this was the first role of his I’d seen at the time), I’d like to revisit it again and see if my opinion on it has changed at all.

I am still in my punk/ rebellious phase, and I just watched it a couple of days ago. It is definitely already in my top ten romances, if not the top ten movies of all time. So if you are thinking of watching it I say do it.
I watched this movie through the Nightstream Film Festival during the pandemic, one of the few non-horror films they showed that year and easily one of the best films in the whole lineup. It damn well deserves to finally get its due! It's like a "manic pixie dream girl" romantic comedy with the genders reversed, way more cursing, and a lot more depth and humanity than such movies usually have. It was also just a gut-bustingly hilarious movie on top of it.
Your review makes me want to see this movie. This is the kinda of movie that I love.
