Correction: I had the light in DC mode. That's why it wouldn't turn off when I flicked the light switch off. In this mode it just switches over to battery power as I showed. This seems to be the default setting. If you choose to switch to AC mode, then it works like a normal light and turns off when you flick the lamp switch. Cheers! 🤓👍
I can only speak for myself, but I enjoyed the video. Variety is the spice of life. I've honestly been looking to see what a standard Philips LED build would look like on a set like yours. Now I know.
Don't remember if I've ever told you how much I like your vids. Always entertaining, chock full of info, and you're a trusted source. Hey Aputure: I've got four MC lights, inspired by Gerald. I use them all the time, and not just for my photo work. Handy buggers!
I feel like the bulbs are just short of being useful due to their lack of power (lux output). You can barely see the bulb underneath the lamp shade, so I wouldn't buy them personally just based on that lack of power. But if they had been maybe twice as powerful I likely would have bought several of them. Hopefully they make a higher wattage version eventually.
Thanks for the Review Gerald ! I definitely liked this unscripted tone, very funny but very informative as well ! You"re spoiling us with such good content ;-) A Fan from France.
Lol I normally encourage SI over SAE units... but Im so used to footcandles to figure how I can use a light fixture on set! 100/100/2.8 makes it so easy to calculate what a fixture's output will translate to exposure settings :) That said, I'm grateful when reviewers meter lights at all! Tyvm
I think I liked this style a little more.... obviously preparation is important in your videos, and we appreciate you being thorough, but I did get a kick out of the 10:41 mark, and it just felt a little more like I was watching you film your video if that makes sense? Either way, keep giving me that in depth info!
Got me all excited that Philips Hue (Smart multicolor bulbs) were only $9!! The actual color smart Hue ones are still $50 buck. Dang. Keep up the great work! Made me remember the old days when I used like 5 cfl bulbs in an umbrella for a key and it still wasn't very bright.
Hey Gerald, A quick suggestion, after shooting the A-roll, shoot a photo of the background without the back light and then mask it in premiere so that the background looks cleaner Unless you're doing it on purpose.
At 5:00 when you rotate the bulb to test on-axis brightness, you actually move the bulb so that it is a few inches closer to the light meter. That might account for the slight discrepancy.
I need to pick one of these up to test against the LIFX bulbs. I find LIFX makes the best consumer smart bulbs (much better than Philips) in terms of brightness and color. Just not sure how the color accuracy is on them. Would be great to see someone like you test them with a meter against the Aputure bulbs.
One huge issue is the fact that unlike normal bulbs the light distribution goes pretty much only up. In your video, the desk lamp shows that nicely with only the upper half of the lampshade being illuminated. For me, that is a big design flaw.
A couple of thoughts. First, having the e26 base being the only means of charging seems like a bad decision. A usb c port to charge it would be fantastic. Otherwise you're going to have to set up lamp bases just to charge them when not in use. Second, $70 seems a little steep for a light that's really only useful as a practical. I think I'd be more into it at the $50 mark. Third, the beam angle doesn't do too well in that lamp you've set up, and I suspect it wont do too well in most table lamps, only illuminating the top. I think I'd almost like to see a battery-less version with a more standard beam spread.
💯 Candles are actually quite bright, I suspect this couldn’t hold a candle to a candle. Many, or rather most practicals are significantly brighter than what this throws out. This product just confuses me.
The actual bulb part is very small, so when you use it as a practical bulb replacement it doesn’t shine downwards, like a normal bulb would. You could see this on your demo. I’ve used another brand for a while now, and while it probably isn’t too colour accurate it’s good enough and it does look like a lightbulb when in a light fixture. The brand is Auraglow. No batteries, but full RGB and works with an app.
I would love to see a comparison between these B7c bulbs and the Astera NYX bulbs. Great review, Keep up the good work. I would also love to see a review of any of the new Kinefinity Cameras.
One thing I would've liked to see is where around 12 minutes you tell us it's not suitable as key lights. Which is by definition true in some cases. But there are situations where "key light" is just a small accent to the ambient light. How the bulb could've worked there? Pump the iso a good 3 stops and use F2. Maybe then the bulb could be an excellent, mobile addition for the on-road-documentarist doing interviews?
I think the real value of this is the ability to use it with the battery while as a stage/shoot prop while shooting out in the field. Instead of a generator powering on set out in the field, this battery powered bulb can do that.
I like the un-scripted Gerald! much more entertaining! I have the nicer HUE lights I would have like them compared to but I have order 2 because at my desk I use two hue light there and then I use several Aputure lights when filming so It would be nice to get everything to Aputure to go with my 300X and 300p and 4 MC's.
Dude, excellent channel and I'll definitely be picking up at least one of these. But we all already know no one is going to use them as a key light. Ha! These are going to be great little practical lights. Good overview, and looking forward to them being available. Will make my life much easier when I need to have a lamp in the shot.
Hahah, lots of fun energy in this one. Had a great time watching it. Yess, would love to see more of the “unscripted” videos 😂👏🏻 Love your content. Looking forward for your next one 👏🏻
My experience using Aputure Sidus app on Android (on a Google Pixel 3) has not been positive: it does not detect my Aputure MC no matter what I do (I tried every setting the developer suggests). Maybe I'd have more luck with this new lightbulb? I do know that the app seems to work fine on Samsung phones, but it seems to be a "your mileage may vary" situation. At any rate, I can confirm that I use the Sidus app on iOS and it does work flawlessly there.
ಠ_ಠ was the best segment in any video you have made, friggin hilarious. I'm in the same boat with the a7s iii, dunno why it's so hard to get them in Canada
Thanks for the review, Gerald. I wish you addressed the beam angle here - it seems problematic. it looked like it could barely fill the top half of the lamp shade you used. You don't get this look with a regular bulb. If that's the case with most practicals - isn't it kind of a deal breaker? Just a weird look IMO...
I'd like to see a comparison to the Philips Hue light bulbs etc. I'm using the Hue ones for most of my lighting situations and accent light's as I've already got them and the system in my house. Pretty nice video as always! :D
I would like to see a comparison with a Hue RGB bulb for accent lighting. Is it worth spending twice as much if the only use is colored light? From my understanding of LEDs while there's a huge difference between cheap and expensive white lights (CRI) the same doesn't apply to colored light.
Good sir waiting patiently for your in-depth super awesome C70 review. It’s down to the A7SIII or C70 for many of us and we’re waiting on your vote as most of us do what you say😉👍
Great episode Gerald! I preordered mine, I’m just not crazy about how the lamp is only showing the top part illuminated. Obviously that’s because of the design of the bulb with less than half is actually the light.
Hope your A7SIII is coming soon. I'm planning to record gyro data with my phone, so the post process stabilizer can be used also for older Sony cameras. If you are interested in that, send me a message.
Correction: I had the light in DC mode. That's why it wouldn't turn off when I flicked the light switch off. In this mode it just switches over to battery power as I showed. Gerald Undone That may have been one of the most confusing explanation during a video in which I was multitasking while listening 😂
@Gerald Undone Once again great video is there a Canon c70 review coming up?🙏🙏🙏
I can only speak for myself, but I enjoyed the video. Variety is the spice of life. I've honestly been looking to see what a standard Philips LED build would look like on a set like yours. Now I know.
I'm Gerald Undone, and the answer to life, the universe and everything is Hue 285.
I absolutely love this style of video from you. Still informative but fun and charming :)
Thanks, Philip. 🤓🙏💜
10:41 😂 The amount of times I ask myself "what the heck am I even doing right now?" while filming a video is ENORMOUS. So relatable, haha.
i just started youtube and i feel always the same haha, "what the hell i'm talking about here?"
POV: you just came from the Aputure Live Stream. Solid information Gerald.
YES!!! Been waiting for this!
Gerald can get geeky about bulbs too. He’s the man.
He brings the light to a world of darkness.
11:46 Hmm... Looks like an interesting configuration 😉😂 Brilliant video as always, Gerald!
9:00 There's something about him holding and tossing a glowing ball of light around that's so damn cool
My favorite quote "It does a pretty good job of making a glow-y light" hahah.
I'm Gerald Undone, "and every breath you take, I'll be watching you."
Don't remember if I've ever told you how much I like your vids. Always entertaining, chock full of info, and you're a trusted source. Hey Aputure: I've got four MC lights, inspired by Gerald. I use them all the time, and not just for my photo work. Handy buggers!
As soon as they're back in stock I'm ordering some with most express shipping possible
This felt like a storytime during a powercut with Gerald Undone. Amazing! 😊
A saying I always here, “ Creativity is intelligence having fun!" Keep up the outstanding work, Gerald. Great job and very informative!
This is actually the first video that I watched on your channel where I didn't feel like I'm in a science class at MIT or something. I enjoyed it.
This might be my favorite review you've done. It was very entertaining and helpful. Now I really want 2-3 of these for my office lights.
nice lamp! BUT let's talk about the elephant in the room... i'm still waiting for the new c70 Undone's magical and totally awesome review!
But Canon said to Gerald there was no C70 ! And I believe what Canon says.
I'm currently using Aputure MC to light my wall for my A-Roll, now I'm considering this one.
I have to say you have one of the best sound systems on UA-cam.
True.. a bit pricey underpowered light!
Thanks for sharing! Didn’t even know this existed(!) Keep it up, Gerald!
Gerald Undone and aputure..... best of the best!
I like this style of video where it seems lighthearted and unscripted (because it is). We get to see a little more of Gerald’s personality.
dude, I feel all of your pain in that end segment. Nice vid. I knew when that beep was coming in but im just glad it came when it was suppose too.
Can't wait to get some!🔥
Thanks for the Review Gerald ! I definitely liked this unscripted tone, very funny but very informative as well ! You"re spoiling us with such good content ;-) A Fan from France.
Unscripted Gerald is lit. 🔥
I'm glad you could shed some light on this new product.
This is the light I need! Purchased. Tired of the flickering Phillips. Thanks Gerald !
Nice job Gerald. It was entertaining watching you go without a script.
Seriously, you have too much fun. I wanna have as much fun when I grow up! 👍👍👍
Had a nice little kitchen boogie with my Aputure MC last weekend 🕺
Lol I normally encourage SI over SAE units... but Im so used to footcandles to figure how I can use a light fixture on set! 100/100/2.8 makes it so easy to calculate what a fixture's output will translate to exposure settings :) That said, I'm grateful when reviewers meter lights at all! Tyvm
Great video Chigz!
The voice crack at the very beginning. He's crazy anyways. Thanks for this awesome review Gerald!
Great vid! Love the attention to detail. This bulb has my attention!! Keep the end reel...that’s fun stuff!!
Dont know what it has to do with this video...
But Gerald undone and Make Art Now is just a perfect Camera-UA-camr pairing. Someone had to say it.
I'm so god damn glad this video didn't get thrown out. Thanks!
great review! very thorough, but straight to the point.
Love your live streams because of your more natural way of talking, and think you should make more videos like this unprepared one 😊
Gerald: No Script today
Also Gerald: Nailing every sentence
Scripting tutorials always rescues me for talking about toooo much unnecessary stuff 😅
Scripting does not mean you don't do multiple takes though. Just sayin' :) A healthy mix of both is good for creating quality output.
Wow your video is out before the launch party from Aputure!! Nice one
I'm all about the nerdism in this video - I'm having fun
the non-scripted sort of videos come off a lot more personable. I LOVE IT
I think I liked this style a little more.... obviously preparation is important in your videos, and we appreciate you being thorough, but I did get a kick out of the 10:41 mark, and it just felt a little more like I was watching you film your video if that makes sense? Either way, keep giving me that in depth info!
Next episode say: I'm Gerald Undone, and it's always noisy in Canada
Great Video, love your humor. Keep it up.

Haha. Yeah. I did that too back in the day with CFLs.
This is one of the most human episodes(?) I've seen of yours and I demand more of this!
Hey Gerald, A quick suggestion, after shooting the A-roll, shoot a photo of the background without the back light and then mask it in premiere so that the background looks cleaner
Unless you're doing it on purpose.

at first, I was like "wow okay just another LED RGB lightbulb" then I saw it not wired to anything and it was still on. Now you've got my attention.

Cool light--if only it was five times brighter. You need a candle to see if it's on.
💯 Candles are actually quite bright, I suspect this couldn’t hold a candle to a candle. Many, or rather most practicals are significantly brighter than what this throws out. This product just confuses me.
You are the best mannnnnn! Love the bloopers lol 😆
I watched this video with sound off,
and enjoyed every minute of art.
Liked the video :) Entertaining to have one like these sandwiched inbetween all those perfect ones! Good job.
I love your way of making videos❤️❤️❤️

I’m digging your unscripted style A LOT. Wonderful job!
I am waiting for the 15C I don't need the battery option, but power I always need more

I'm watching it high. And it really feels like you're way higher than me. Excellent video!
UA-camrs gonna have a field day making their whole house have a 98CRI RGB look
My jaw is dropping and I can't buy these fast enough! All the things I am going to do with these....
I think the real value of this is the ability to use it with the battery while as a stage/shoot prop while shooting out in the field. Instead of a generator powering on set out in the field, this battery powered bulb can do that.

Maybe the sixth temperature is off @ 0 - seems like a good product to use for scenes with fixtures. Little pricey for us Canadians, but practical.
The fun part is very good. :). Keep it that way
Dude, excellent channel and I'll definitely be picking up at least one of these. But we all already know no one is going to use them as a key light. Ha! Perhaps this could also be used as a hair light. Might be nice to change colors for different moods.
Looks great, can def think a lot of scenarios how to use these. Allthough I wish they had more output, so you light more with your practicals.
Thanks for the test, but with the flare of the brown table I think it's not a great idea to measure the color temperature.
Next intro: I’m never gonna give you up never gonna let you down.
Pause
... rolled!
YESSSSS!!!!
Would have been interesting to see how much you need to jack the iso to get a useful key light range.
oh the joys of shipping to canada
This WAS very entertaining!
Never been this fast on this mans videos.
Today's Gerald Undone is basically the Breaking Bad episode, Fly
I want this light! It will help for zooms and streaming.
might just redo all the bulbs in my house with them.
Now that I'd like to see. 👍
Hope your A7SIII is coming soon. I'm planning to record gyro data with my phone, so the post process stabilizer can be used also for older Sony cameras.
If you are interested in that, send me a message.
Amazing product for practical light!!!!!!!!
Diggin the intro!
I couldn't get past the 5 minute mark on this video before I got a headache. It's a light bulb!!! I'll take granddads lightbulb any day!
So i can power this from a lamp and run it for extended periods, or is it going to have any problems like overheating?
