  • It's a mission to the North Pole in this classic film review of Submarine spy thriller Ice Station Zebra (1968) adapted from an Alistair MacLean novel and starring Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown and Patrick McGoohan.
    .
USN nuclear sub USS Tigerfish must rush to the North Pole to rescue the staff of Drift Ice Station Zebra when a Soviet satellite crash lands there...
Having received a distress signal, the nuclear submarine Tigerfish, commanded by Cmdr. James Ferraday (Rock Hudson), is called upon to get to Ice Station Zebra carrying a mysterious passenger Jones (Patrick McGoohan), and eventually picking up two more, a Soviet defector Boris Vaslov (Ernest Borgnine), and an American Marine officer, Captain Anders (Jim Brown).
Once Ferraday and his men arrive at Zebra, stumbling upon disaster and more mystery, the film shows glimpses of being an arctic spy thriller and several of the scenes actually reminded me of the thing or the thing from another world… Its here the plot gets a bit murky in terms of who’s who as the team all race to uncover some secret missing technology…

Seen 2 years ago at Christmas. The film was good, but not catchy. Rock Hudson didn't play as well as in "Tobruk" 1967.

I’ve yet to see Tobruk, it’s definitely on my watch list though! Thanks!

I love the film and if you ask me, Hudson is pretty good in it. Not as good as McGoohan though. The stage sets are kinda what you'd expect for the time and the jet scenes are similar to those of Dr Strangelove. The first half is better and more intriguing and the end is anti-climactic but probably more realistic than a massive shoot-out.

My favorite line came when Ernest Borgnine is fighting Jim Brown. Borgnine says do you want to die like a bull in the ring or a steer in the slaughterhouse, at least the bull has a chance. Great movie & cast!!!

This was Howard Hughes,s favourite film , he watched it hundreds of times, which drove his staff crazy.

Made in 1969 and the usual overly critical negative comments. Many forget that there were other great films at around the same time. It's a damn sight better film than the childish rubbish produced now.

Not heard of this one to be honest. Looks interesting though.

True or False: This film was MGM's biggest bomb.

Haha not sure how big a bomb it was, but I do know it had a poor box office at the time... which is a shame as it's great!

I really enjoyed the book, thought the film was rubbish. I only saw it once, decades ago, but the really bad bits seem to be seared into my memory.
They're supposed to be on the North Polar icecap, yet half the time they didn't have their hoods up, they're not wearing face protection and you can't see their breath.
The stupid antagonism between the two main characters is entirely absent from the book.
When Ernest Borgnine is in it, you don't have to spend a lot of time wondering wo the villain is. And that stupid bit where he makes the two goodies fight .. wtf? he's a villain so he's got to be a psycho?
Read the book. It's one of the last Alastair MacLean's that I enjoyed - after this he started to get formulaic and two-dimensional, but this is top-notch.

Haha yep, I agree with all of your points. 👍🏻 I think I’ve started to enjoy it for all of its failings over the years. I’ve yet to read the book but would definitely like to eventually. Thanks so much for your comment 👍🏻 take care. 🍿

@@ReelClassicFilmReviews - I do recommend the book: the two bits that got me most were both set on the submarine: one when it's on fire under the ice and so can't surface to clear the sub of all the smoke and associated contaminants, and the other when it's plunging out of control down into the depths of the Arctic Ocean.

I agree with your assessment. It is an entertaining film, but far from 'great'. And that 'arctic' set... wow...

Yeah those sets and effects have not aged well 🤦🏻‍♂️😆

@@ReelClassicFilmReviews No, they have not. And truth to tell - they looked pretty crummy, even when the film was new. But, I guess it was cheaper than some location shoot, and they'd spent a fortune just on the submarine and its effects.
