After leaving Pablo Cruise Bud Cockrell had a band in Monterey called Nickel and a Nail. Was a great powerful band. Bud was approached by a Producer that led him back to Mississipi. Soon after he died from complications from Diabetes
Bill's work with Pablo Cruise is wonderful. The drum sounds are superb. Listen to "When Love Is At Your Door", "Don't Wanna Live Without It" as an example.
He was so right about Bud Cockrell! Bud and Dave together were amazing! Still can't stop listening to all of there music daily! Not the hits, all the other songs! The group as musicians are special! Still trying to obtain two of the old albums on CD, place in the sun and the "pablo cruise" albums, but are selling way over reasonable price. Share there music with younger generations!
Thanks, John. These interviews are all really interesting. I'm 74 and grew up with all this stuff. Had all of Pablo Cruise's albums.
Prior to Pablo Cruise Bud Cockrell was with a late 60’s Band Beautiful Day!…They had a Song called White Bird!
Also I like the new RHM theme Music!
Bud only played with Beautiful Day for a short time before Pablo Cruise...their original bass player was Mitchell Holeman
Pablo Cruise...I was working for the A&M distributor when this album came out. I was proud to work the phone for this one...good memories of my yesterdays 🎶🎸🎶
I love Pablo Cruise but have heard and read very little about them (other than liner notes), so hearing these stories is fantastic to me. That Jeff liked Steve Price is wonderful. I agree that Bud (and Bruce) were great, but with Cory and Dave they were very well-balanced.
After Bruce left Pablo we got him in a band I drummed for called American Standard. Bruce was good but I also knew Bud after seeing them rehearse at a friends place in Richmond on the bay where they wrote Ocean Breeze. Bruce did not have that voice that Bud had but then again who the heck does!!! The original configuration was the best so too bad Santos talked Bud out of Pablo...Steve Price is a great feel drummer and knows what to and not to play!!! Saw him later in the Parrotheads band and he was still great still!!!
I loved Pablo Cruz. I loved Jeff Porcaro. Was nice to hear that Jeff loved Pablo Cruz. Makes me feel like I have good instincts and good taste in music.
A little odd that a sound engineer doesn’t have his book available in audiobook!
More Pablo Cruise!
Bud Cockrell’s bass playing and singing were phenomenal. Bill alludes to the fact that Jenkins sang the higher parts, and that was true when they were harmonizing. But when they were trading lines, Bud often took the higher, ballsier part. An example of that was “and all your friends are calling you a fool, cause you don’t know a good thing when you’ve got it in your hand”.. Clearly Bud soaring in full voice.
Bill also neglected to mention that Bud’s wife was no Holiday Inn lounge singer. Pattie Santos was the established, original vocal powerhouse from It’s A Beautiful Day. Bud had played in the band as well, in 1973, and they were magic together. I think she had visions of them being the next Roberta Flack / Donnie Hathaway team and I think the record company saw that possibility as well. But there was no reason for Bud to leave Pablo Cruise in order to pursue that project, they could have done it on the side and seen how it was received. The truth is, Pattie didn’t have to twist Bud’s arm to leave the band. He was so madly in love with her that he wanted to be with her all the time.
Sadly, Pattie died in a car wreck in 1989 and Bud died from complications of diabetes 15 years ago, a tragic ending for two hugely talented people.
I loved Bud Cockrell unique voice that blended well with Dave Jenkins smooth soulful voice. No mention of Worlds Away and Part of the Game, which I think are fantastic. Bill mastered both of these albums too.
I think that they rebounded very well, considering how the lost Bud.... Cory Lerios, probably my favorite keyboard player, is so overlooked.
This was my favorite group of the 70s. SO GOOD
Best concert I saw, was Doobie Brothers, Pablo Cruise and Little River Band. Angels Camp California, 1976
Worlds away song on the album was written and sung by new bass player Bruce Day...
@@stevehazlewood2960 Bruce shared lead with Jenkins on Worlds Away. Bruce wrote it with Lerios and Bob Brown.
I song that was on their 2nd LP that should have got some radio play... I Think it's Finally Over..is a great tune. You should check it out.
Didn't Pablo Cruise come out of the ashes of a group called The STONEGROUND?
I had the STONEGROUND LP “Sraight out” it was FANTASTICO!
Yes, Cory, Dave and Steve were in fact in Stoneground a legendary San Francisco bay area band...
To this day I praise major label record companies and disdain most all radio.
I love these stories. Too bad better things couldn't have happened for them.
Pablo Cruise’s Place in the Sun and World’s Away Albums were really good!
Sad story about Pablo Cruise, they were a great band. Cockrell Santos band went nowhere.
