BR in the 1990s North Camp Station & Class 37 action in March 1993

- In March of 1993 I was lucky enough to capture the last of the oil trains to leave the terminal at North Camp on the Reading - Guildford line. On the 15th March 1993 this was hauled by 37892 aptly named "Ripple Lane" as this was the trains destination. Within months of this clip being taken the station had changed dramatically what with the demise of the oil terminal and a new road overbridge beside the level crossing to ease the congestion at the barriers. Sadly very little in the way of locomotive hauled trains run through here today, on the other hand our next location the day after still see's a variety of locomotive hauled trains mainly 66 class.
At Aberthaw East junction we see a train emerging from Aberthaw Power Station then shortly after a train arrives double headed by 37801 (not 37601 as described in the clip) and 37702. After unloading the train the same is seen leaving the Power Station with the empties. Next we move further West to Port Talbot and Margam where several more trains are witnessed one from the steel works headed by 37798. Nearer to the Train Depot of Margam where the lines from the works converge with the mainline from Swansea to Cardiff a plethora of different trains could be seen in those days and a small selection was seen on this a typical afternoon with an eastbound parcels train hauled by a RES class 47 # 47594 ,an up HST service for London Paddington, and more locomotive hauled freight. The signal here PT 8 referring to, it being controlled from Port Talbot Box, is a popular stop for crew changes using the depot at Margam. Hopefully I will get more clips done over the coming period.
From a old driver of them as I have always loved travelling on and working with them I miss it
Yes, the class 37 was the best diesel locomotive ever, the sound, the look.... Beautiful. My favourite locomotive of all time, then the 47 and the 55 class.
Thanks for the upload and the memories ;)
You are most welcome, any English Electric loco was a favourite.......Mark
Excellent video Mark and superb quality for something recorded on tape! I always enjoy these archive clips of the sort of workings around when I was a child.
Your very welcome and many thanks for the kind feedback. Glad it evoked memories. Mark
Pulls those tankers with ease. Great workhorse.
Always nice to watch some 90s traction.

The class 37 was by far the best of the original diesels
ian waterall Many thanks Ian. Yes the 37's share a fondness in my heart too.....really any of the English Electrics....Mark
Hi there...I used compact Super VHS at that time with a JVC 707S video camera.....Many thanks for liking the video....more vintage material will follow in the year....Best wishes...Mark
37's one of the best classes of Locomotives as I see steam Locomotives aswell as the Flying Scotsmen 7742 is coming soon to the bluebelle railway in West Sussex 😀 keep doing want you our doing as I'm glad to see they still running now
Many thanks Robert....and I agree with you...Best wishes....Mark

Excellent video a big like from me, anymore early 90's 37 footage? Love it
I have masses of it amongst my private video collection, Peak Forest,The north, Scottish sleepers, etc, what would your favourite be? I will try to post more soon. Cheers Mark
spompey Hi buddy, i missed the reply oh that sounds mega my favourite 37 workings were Peak Forest stone especially the ICI hoppers but i like all the workings that left there.
Also Northern steel and similar would be excellent chief, if you could upload them that would be superb ;-) Many thanks again for sharing these classic vids.
The engine in one of these is huge . The cylinders are 15.4 litres each!!!
Many thanks for the info cidertom and for watching...best wishes....Mark
Love the sound of tractors
I agree....Many thanks Oscar.....Good to know the sound can be still heard in places......Mark
Awesome film , really clear sound & visuals, what format did you originally record with?
Great Vids there spompey...
Cheers Warren
Many thanks Warren your very welcome Mark
Great footage, and the 60 starting those ore cars is quite uneventful compared with the thrash of the 37s. Weren't these ore trains once the domain of a trio 37s?
Around the South Wales area they did have 3x37 haulage for a while....Many thanks and sincere regards...Mark
the level crossing has long gone -they built a bridge over the line a few years ago. these workings used to be class 33 powered as did virtually everything on the southern region
Things have certainly changed in that area, it's hard to believe how long ago this was now ....many thanks for the info and for watching Iain.........Mark
Who was the idiot on the wrong side of the level crossing with a child? I'm surprised the shunter didn't move them? I was a driver and know that train would never have moved if someone is lineside. What an irresponsible father. I remember those days of the lovely 37's at North Camp. All trees now in the old sidings.
Was that your montego turbo? I had one for my 1st car (10yr old E reg)
Yes Mat it was indeed Monty the Montego!.....Many thanks ....Best regards...Mark
37 and 47 the best by far
best wishes. Chris...Mark
Great video mate but u will find it was 37801 not 37601
Cheers for the comment I did notice as i had corrected it in the video description. Whoops!!.. Mark
Hi Spompey, have you done anymore 37 vids yet? :(

Yes....After the filming I said to the (Idiot) chap with the child about the predicament he was in and also the shunter was aware at the time of his position deemed him to be OK, albeit I did not really agree. The Ripple Lane crew were also aware of him but did not seem too concerned, if the shunting had left the lines clear at any time then one of them would have intervened and ejected him away.....Many thanks and I do totally agree that this chap was trespassing. best wishes..and take care....Mark
One thing s for sure those 37's sound awesome compared to a 66, and they don't half give Welsh locos wired names which are in unpronoucable words oh and of course I forgot they like to shag sheep
Thanks for the comment ciderton, the loco names were great!
Sorry mis spelled your name Cidertom, my best friends are sheep, careful what you say in your comments
@@spompeyafraid not no not being careful at all.
