Rusty German Helmet Restoration. Preservation in Oxalic Acid
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- In this video, I will show full preservation of the German Helmet M42 size 64 from the World War II. This helmet has been in the ground for 80 years. As a result of the restoration, the original paint and the color of the helmet were preserved.

I don’t know about you, but in Russia we call it not Restoration, but Conservation. Restoration is the return of the original appearance. Conservation is protection from destruction in its existing form.
Anche in Italia è chiamato restauro conservativo
@@YzerWingsPlease don't tell me you're American because that would be hypocrisy in its highest form.

Aqui no Brasil, isso também não é chamado de restauração.
Never gets tired of watching helmet restoration.
For those that don't know this is a m42 stalhelm
Yep the fixed vent holes and raw/unfolded edge indicate M42.
Right. And very few had an insignia, so I have doubts about the authenticity of it, especially given the condition of the shell. The German decals were not that resistant
@@laurentdevaux5617 You think it could be an SS issued helmet because of the insignia?
@@DaidoujiGaming No, here this is a shell wearing the standard eagle of the Heer (land forces). Some M42 indeed had SS insignia, but it was applied on the right side (if it has been applied on the left side, it's a helmet for foreign volunteers, extremely rare and very unlikely on a M42). Anyway, as I already told it, a M42 wil never have an eagle and a tricolor shield (suppressed in 1940), and I still have a doubt about this one. First, because M42 had insignia just for a few months (but why not, it's still possible to find one), and second, most important, the German helmet decal isn't that strong ; given the deep pitting of the shell, I think quite strange the insignia could still be so well preserved. I had a M40 with an insignia, well worn but not rusted and complete, and its insignia wasn't that good... don't forget it's only a decal. The only exception I know where you can have a deeply oxydized shell with an insignia still well preserved is the Chinese M35, as the insignia was painted, making it much stronger. I had one, found in a very rusted condition, but I managed to recover nearly half of the paint and nearly 90% of the insignia. I even saw one so badly pitted that it had holes, but you coud still see a part of the insignia ! The problem being that most of the Chinese M35, extremely rare, you can find now are fakes. But that's another story !
Wow, lot of Nazis here
It’s amazing how much metal can rust over so many decades of not being preserved
It's good to see you back at work preserving history, thank you.
Just to be precise, Nazi history.
@@dg1294yeah so what
I'm sorry but it looked exactly the same

Наконец то новое видео ! Лайк мастеру!
The thing that gets me in these videos is the constant heavy breathing!
I do that too 😅
Oxalic acid can make miracles on rusted shells if well used. I salvaged a Chinese M1935 like that and managed to recover nearly 90% of the original insignia and some of 35% of the original feldgrau, a chance when you know the rarity of a Chinese German made helmet. But it was only possible because the shell I found wasn't as bad as this one and because the Chinese insignia was painted, not a decal, making it much more resistant. That's why I have quite a doubt about the authenticity of this helmet's insignia, given the poor condition of the shell
Great job 👏👍
you should have re-used the liner band and the split pins(not the leather). throwing an original away, especially one thats original from the helmet hurts, but great restoration!
Thanks for those videos, i recently made a video restoring my german helmet, i learned from your channel, thanks.
Are you a Nazi too?
What are you soaking it in? I have. Portuguese WWI helmet with. lot of rust on it I want to make displayable.
Could you have done more? Or is this all you could’ve done. Also why do put spots of wax?
Keep up the great work

Not for nothing, but submerging it in Evaporust would save you a shitload of time. Just sayin.
How the hell do you get those helmets?
Maybe some more rust bubbles could be removed easily, anyway well done.
You might have gotten better results using a rust converter instead of wax for your final step. Rust converters would change the rust to iron oxide, which is black and would also protect against further rusting. It also looks better than leaving the reddish rust under the wax. I really like what you did to preserve the decal, though.
the hammering hurt my soul..
That's very nice dude. Keep it up!
You realise it's a Nazi helmet?
@@dg1294it's a whermacht helmet not nazi it's normal German army
How can i get your service for a ww2 scabbard?
Do you have asthma?
Total failure
Would some sort of electrolysis work better at removing the rust?
Nice but I wish it was restores more smoothly 😃😃

Where do you get these helmets?
Why, are you a Nazi?

Very nice ! To bad the other decal/ badge was gone. Great video. Thanks. Be safe
It only ever had one decal, many M42's never got any decal at all.
I enjoyed the video too.

You are correct. 👍
If you ever find a M42 with two insignias, than it's a fake. They only had the eagle, and for a very short period of time. And to be frank, I have doubts about this one given the really bad condition of the shell...
Wow, Nazis!
