German M16 Stahlhelm Restoration

- In this video, I will show the restoration of the World War 1 German M16 Stahlhelm.
The Stahlhelm was often camouflaged by troops in the field using mud, foliage, cloth covers, and paint. Official issue cloth covers in white and grey appeared in late 1916 and early 1917. Camouflage paint was not formally introduced until July 1918, when German Army Order II, No 91 366, signed by General Erich Ludendorff on 7 July 1918, outlined official standards for helmet camouflage. The order stipulated that helmets should be painted in several colours, separated by a finger-wide black line. The colours should be relevant to the season, such as using green, brown and ochre in summer.

poor guy that weared it 100 years ago... now he can rest in peace i guess. good work!
Lol
Honestly, the condition of the steel at the start looks to be way too far gone but what an awesome job of reviving it. Did you use artist oil paints for the camouflage?
Another asinine comment. Did you watch the video at all? All the Lefranc & Bourgeois oil paints seen @13:20 says Huile, which is French for Oil. And yes they are artist oil paints. It's not oil paints from the dollar store. This particular brand comes from the biggest manufacturer globally and it is the brand most used by both amateurs and professional artists. Similar to what Windsor & Newton is to watercolors. But it's quality is reflected in the price.
@@gr1mrea9er82 no need to get your knickers in a twist. Chill. A simple yes would have been suitable. I have never used oils paints so therefore unaware of brands names
@@user-jx1lc6it7p . it's a legit question. When items are restored, it's only normal to ask questions. That's how we learn

@GovoruN +++++
No, that paint design was real. He copied it onto the helmet
That’s the original look…
@@krak2889 right
the colors are fine, but you won't see such rough furrows from the brush anywhere... I hoped to the last that he would smooth them out
@@psypepper yeah, yeah i guess so
Everything apart from the paintwork I'd say is totally brilliant
The paint is supposed to look like that, all the soldiers on the field painted them themselves it never looked professional
nothing brilliant about welding and body filler
Yeah I feel the same. They usually thinned the paint out with fuel if I’m not mistaken. Made it go on smoother but still visible brush strokes.
@@jackdozhier2151 I wouldn't say hes talking about it not looking profesional. The camo isnt really doing its job cuz the helmet is still giving off a bit of a shine wich the camo was meant to prevent
The colour palette is just plain wrong.
10 seconds, 20 tops before that's got a snipers bullet through it!
THEN, maybe, it would look authentic lol.
It's great to see people who put in such effort to keep history alive.
FAM HE DESTROYED TWO ORIGINAL HELMETS HE IS NOT KEEPING HISTORY ALIVE HE IS KILLING IT
@@fraiserwatson4790 would you use a kidney from another child to save your child with no kidneys?
@@KumaFall uh idk probably, but its not the same because one is a human life, and one is a part of history that will literally never go away unless you do something stupid like this to it
@@fraiserwatson4790bro those two helmets were literally as good as you can get for bringing something back to a representable form. You cant show half a helmet with fuck ton of rust and holes and day that it represents anything it would have loooned like back then
The fact you were able to restore what was practically scrap metal is crazy.
Props to you.
I'm amazed how you can bring a pile of rust back to life like that 👍 very enjoyable to watch you do it. To be honest I liked it when it was just green. Fantastic restoration.
In the green phase that would have done great. Don’t like the colourful paint…
I was thinking exactly the same.
An extremely well done restauration - but the camouflage paint at the end kind of ruined it.
@@tomrogerlilleby2890 its not really ruined when you can just paint over or remove it
@@medievalarmorexptert6827 plus this is how the Germans back in 1916 camouflaged their helmets
It's the old "Ship of Theseus" trick. Excellent.
Big Fan Bro Big Fan♥️
This is a masterpiece. Congratulation from Vietnam.😉👍🍺
It's astonishing how you can restore anything from any condition. Awesome helmet!!
I wonder what stories that helmet could tell. Was it rusted out naturally, or did it's owner suffer some fatal strike that went right through the helmet? These restorations are amazing!
probaly the first choice
Nice! I love these Stahlhelms tons. Can you do a showcase of your helmet collection? I am rather curious :)
Same, I'm interested to see what sort of helmets you have.
Great idea!

Your profile pic is too cute 😋
I love it man.
Your restoration videos are the best!
And the outcome of this specific restoration is just beautiful.
Thats sad that he destroy over 100 years old helmets
@@Wiisiaiqkqkqoqoqoqoq not really. They cant be really called helmets anymore.
Its amazing how often they find Stahlhelms of booth ww1 and ww2, I love these kinds of restoration videos, Keep up the good work!
Love to see the restoration. Really appreciate your effort.
My grandfather was force conscripted into German army. After he built his house after coming back, he used a german helmet for 40 years to empty out the septic tank.
I asked him to give it to me after sewer renovation in the 90’ and he went into a rage fit over it. That thing disappeared soon after that. I never saw it again. Last I remember it was still in quite a good condition. Much better than the one in the video.
You worked some magic on this one. Incredible work.
Beautiful metal work.
From ugly helmet to the Partridge's bus.
🎼C'mon get Happy. 🎶
Great work, WW2!!
Congratulations! I think is totaly green more beautiful than many collors.
I guess they used to pain them just like he did for camouflage! 😊
I was dubious about restoring the helmet when it appeared to be little more than rust, but I'm mightily impressed.
Who knows how he does it?😮That's amazing, isn't it?👍
Excellent job on this !! It looks amazing.
Great restoration and paintwork, well done!
Cause that’s the original look
@@krak2889 Okay, I wont argue.
Well done!
This is so relaxing to watch. Great job on the helmet 👌🏻
He Destroy it
Man
This not a restoration
This is an remake haha
Awesome job bro ❤️
;)
remade with body filler.
It's still in there
Simplesmente uma belissima restauração 🤝🤝🤝
Now you should age it, it is a little bit too bright on the colors, so... A little bit of combat wouldn't be bad for this helmet😉👌🏼
As I watched this, I felt IAM the one who restored, what an amazing achievement..
Well said
This is certainly a high level of dedication to the art of restoration....!
Fantastic work, great helmet when you finished, amazing 👍
For those concerned about the paint, this pattern of paint was actually used by the Germans in ww1 (there were official guidelines that made it look like this). Although, combining 2 original helmets to make a “new” one is quite questionable
Very good job, but I feel the paint has been applied too thickly with lots of brush strokes - I can't see that on the original.
That's the way soldiers did it back in 1914-18.
Hi, I have a helmet like that just a little worn, but what I use it doesn't have to look so good, but it's fit for purpose. And I've never seen this artistic precision yet! WWII Tube Restoration so never stop videoing and the restoration of these beautiful historical objects! 👍
Wow, this is amazing! You are very talented. Crazy how destroyed the helmet looked on beginning... Even if I don't like the paintjob too much tbh. It looks kinda weird... Kinda cartoony. But I would buy him from you!
I do agree with you on how that paintjob was goofy looking, however it is historically accurate.
This is awesome! One question though, would you happen to know how to replace one of the missing ventilation horns?
It's beatiful to see a k-on fan maintain his apparel
Nice restoration. I feel like if you drop one of these it will break in half because of all the pitting under the filler.
He hits it with a hammer a bunch so probably not, it's car body filler, good stuff is quite durable.
I want to change the chin strap posts on my M17, now I know how so thanks for making this very useful and informative vid.
Love the camo finish 👌
Some parts are close to how I would’ve done it, others are completely out of my league, I wouldn’t even dream of it, very good work! 👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful restoration!
This is honestly one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen.
you are easily impressed.
Thought you were gonna sand down the camo paint job to a smooth finish but I suppose that's how it would of looked originally, outstanding work none the less...
Very nice restoration. Bring back to life a piece of history. Congrats from Brazil.
Ficou uma bosta 😅
no, thats not how- HOW DID HE DO THAT?! The helmet looked long gone but this man just... wow... true talent
Is that the way it’s supposed to be painted? Your restoration was unbelievable!
Yes it is!
I guess they used to pain them just like he did for camouflage! 😊
Have become a fan of this channel.
No idle chit chat- just get to work with on screen displays on materials etc.
Actually the helmet in the red colour looked cool.
I like it. Very smooth.
Your work was great but the only thing I did not like was painting it. It would be more beautiful if you just painted the same army color.
Bro, that WAS the original army color. Towards the end of the war, just about every german soldier had a similar paint job.
I'd have kept it green and put some early SS decals on to create a transitional helmet
ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT RESTORATIONS ..WITH THE WRONG PAINT....
It's a ww1 helmet, they are supposed to have that paint, it is historically accurate good sir
@@THE_NEW_CRUSADER Green it will be accurate as well..
Awesome, love it!
Nice, my favorite stahlhelms
Well done. History does come alive with patience and skill.
Phenomenal job!
That flared edge has a Star Wars baddie vibe to it!
That’s cause the Empire is based on the Germans in WWII
Excellent rebuild as always but I think you cold have done better with the paint work as everyone notices
I guess they used to pain them just like he did for camouflage! 😊
Best Stahlhelm out of all the others! Love the M16 Stahlhelm ❤
The lugs look like something that should be coming out of Frankenstein's neck. Great work!
Incredible...... When I saw the condition it was in I didn't think it could be restored..... Wonderful skills.... 👍👍👍👍👍
define restored? he candy coated a turd.
@@13christbane see come on....be fair....he made it look brand new from 2 rusted old helmets.... That's one mighty fine turd
The lines between the fields in the camouflage were to be finger-thick, anyway great job.
Amazing work!
Well im amazed i didnt even know that was possible. 👏
Awesome work, awesome channel. Keep it up!
Really nice work, keep it up!
Great restoration. 👍
Fantastic work. But I have questions. What type of car putty used? Also, what became of the discarded helmet bits?
Being a german Stahlhelm, it may have been a lost helmet from WW1, instead of re-used one for WW2.
It's clearly a WW1 helmet - even a non-collector can see that🙄
@@Sandstorm9562 Re-read again what I said.
IMPRESIONANTE !!!!
QUE TRABAJO !!!
QUE MARAVILLA !!!!❤
This was an awesome restoration, i just dont understand why its getting so much hate. but very good job though 👍
What a great restoration, and TRUE paintwork like the original might have had! 👍🇬🇧
what a transformation, great job
Beautiful work!
Très beau travail !!!
World War 1 helmet's.
Magnifique
Tip when painting don't use a brush, use a cloth because it looks like it actually belongs on the helmet because it won't have brush marks.
Awesome man, great job
wooow!!:) brawo za pomysł i wytrwałość w naprawie!!:)
I realized that this German Nazi soldiers iron helmet, was first in the very worst shape ever. It had rust holes merely everywhere, even bumpy rust spots as well. 😳
It's amazing restoration!👍
Wonderful job... thoroughly enjoyed.
I saw the first helmet, and was like, "Oh hell no, that thing is gone"
then I saw the second one and was like, "okay, maybe not."
I'm not the kind of guy to restore, I'm the kind of guy to chop metal things up and turn them into something new.
Though I do make medieval armor.
A true Master craftsman.
Beautiful restoration!!
Just a tip if ya welding thin metal if you hold a piece of brass behind the hole your welding your weld won't stick to it and you can fill the steel easier , plus it leaves it smoother therefore less fettling I've been doing this for years never failed ..
Your restoration knowledge is endless, you are simply the best!!!
You do some good work Sir. Do you make the liners to and/or where do you get the parts not that I'm wanting to buy I just didn't know anybody made replacement parts.
I need replacement parts for my m16 Stahlhelm that I bought from Bulgaria.
I dont know what i was expecting with this, but it certainly wasn't a Frankenstein between 2 helmets
Great Work! Excuse the ignorance, I am assuming the tortoise shell painting was camouflage? And the rough texture to the painting would avoid glints or reflections correct?
Yes
Camouflage paint was not formally introduced until July 1918, when German Army Order II, No 91 366, signed by General Erich Ludendorff on 7 July 1918, outlined official standards for helmet camouflage. The order stipulated that helmets should be painted in several colours, separated by a finger-wide black line.
